Yes, they will be hiked per month from 45 to 50 paisa for at least 10 months ahead.
Already January diesel prices are hiked by 50p, now the dates for February hike are yet to come.
so in a years time how much will diesel per litre cost ?

Like Dharmesh said, add 6 Rs. to current diesel prices.

Govt.'s target is to remove the subsidy of approx 10 Rs. that prevails currently.
You never know, the govt. may hike the prices more than 50p per month such that the whole subsidy drama is gone by next year.

So basically, soon diesel prices would be + Rs. 10 to what they are today.

so the advantage is just 10 rs over petrol I think it makes sense then to go for a petrol model

High mileage cars. Diesel any day. BUT if you hardly travel 1000 kms a month the petrol should be the choice, even today.

My car does 20000 kms minimum in a year, I makes sense to go for a diesel.

most SUV's here are Diesel and personal use owners are all not drive 5 kms per day or 1000 kms a month but they used to touch or cross 12,000 kms in a year/

haven't got my point here, its simple new age diesel engines are as good as its petrol sibling that doesn't need to be driven daily or can sleep for a week too

someone calls it as noisy we the diesel lovers calls it as the way it responds
[talk to us ] to the way we drive "i love the diesel grunt, and the turbo kick"

mine is a 22000 kms 2 yrs old diesel car and i haven't spent much or lost anything like threatened by many petrol heads

For me, I stick with diesel for most cars.
Pune petrol pices - Rs.72.xx,
Diesel price - Rs.52.xx.

Price diff is some Rs.20/L.
Even if complete so called subsidy on diesel is removed, the price hike will be of max to max Rs.7.5-8/L as this is current under-recovery for oil cos.
This means you will still save 20-8 = 12/L even after diesel prices are completely deregulated. Apart from this price diff, there is higher FE of atleast 30% in case of diesels over petrol, which makes running costs far less. And with new gen diesels, maintenance price diff too isn't big as it was the case earlier.

By the way, does anyone have an idea what gives more margin to a car maker- a diesel or a petrol car?
In most cases, the manufacturing costs are almost the same. Car cos hike diesel car rates because demand is more. In case of Merc, the price diff is not even 2-4% !!

Let diesel price increase & see price diff in petrol & diesel cars reducing.

Jan practically all diesels models of every carmaker outsold the petrol models .
Well on second thoughts Jan figures are probably due to people who had already made up their minds or paid money etc etc ..momentum/inertia whatever you want to call it .. feb, mar figures & onward might really show the effect if any....

But with this, reduce in gap between petrol and diesel, will bring in petrol UVs in market? [roll]
Well I am actually seriously thinking of a petrol UV especially if it gives good mileage & also much lesser initial cost again something like Duster say 1.5L INR lesser initial price! But the options of Petrol UV's are very limited I believe.

mine is a 22000 kms 2 yrs old diesel car and i haven't spent much or lost anything like threatened by many petrol heads
But you will lose now going forward, won't you? (Due to the new Govt policy)

By the way the gradual increase in prices of Diesel fuel every month is working like a charm for the Govt just like the economists rightly predicted it beautifully, meaning nobody is even complaining about it or even realising how big a change this is because it goes up very little each month. this is like slowly picking/pinching our pockets which we are used to anyways due to the rampant inflation in this country! Probably a percentage of the Diesel car buyers are not even clearly fully aware of the policy shift & its consequences on cost of the ride per km! (this is clearly evident from the question like "is it going to be increasing or not?" someone asked in one of the posts in this thread above, well of course diesel fuel prices are clearly set to increase & it will be better for diesel fuel buyers/users take notice, in simple words monthly fuel bill will be up by 20% in a year's time its as simple as that!)

that's right but i don't think petrol price will remain same when i got to pay 6 rupees more for diesel i meant after a year or so,

even if diesel and petrol cost same, kitna detha hey indians still goes for the one that gives more mileage

lets wait and see what comes out on the next budget

See that's where you are wrong, even if international crude oil prices remain constant for the next year and any and all petroleum product prices remain same, even then as a policy shift Govt has decided to free/increase only diesel prices (& maybe LPG) by gradually increasing every month!

I agree with your "kitna detha hey" part! but they might also ask "pehle kitna deti thi? aur aage kitna degi?" [lol]

so while "we" know how to save money by making certain choices, "we" also know when to stop making those choices because it might not make sense anymore.... by the way the budget might not have anything to do with this policy shift but yes its a wait & watch for most buyers like you said which will in turn slow down diesel car sales IMO!

@msn1,

lets look at a scenario. Petrol and Diesel prices are same at Rs 70. I am in a market for a sedan. I zero in on a Manza, 90 bhp petrol and diesel are the options.
Now If I am a city user, then both cars will return the same FE @ 13kmpl. Why should I pay extra 1 Lakh for diesel car? Makes no sense.
BUT if I am a high mileage guy and frequently do long trips, then the diesel Manza returns around 20kmpl but petrol will return only 16kmpl. Thats when the diesel makes sense.
