Dealership experiences

even allowed test drive of the proposed vehicle to be bought.

So yes the beast is coming from Joshi Auto Zone in Chandigarh.

The problems associated with a car manufactured >6 months back are

1) battery quality deteriorate s due to noncharging in time , please find out manufacturing date. better to replace it at the time of delivery.
2) rubber and plastic life and quality deteriorates and becomes unpredictable, The most important is rubbers are tyres.
Tyre quality becomes unpredictable due long disuse, it gets hardened , leading to bouncy ride, leading to underinflation by user, leading to reduced fuel economy.

Such tyres are also prone to sidewall cuts due to hardening , leading to untimely change of that one pirticular tyre, leading to balancing issues, as remaing tyres are hard and old, the cycle continues.

Please find out manufacturing date of tyres of the car.

Door , boot , window , bonnet , plastic and rubber beadings get hardened ,may lead to
water leakages in monsoon, do not rely upon post carwash scenario. Also important are engine rubber foundations.

All kind of oils needs to be replaced.

Also resale value will suffer by 5 to 10 percent.

You will have to cleaverly find out wheather the car was used as a TD car,

please , take into consideration, the above mentioned parts , while calculating the discount.
Please hold on the registration process, unless you confirm and find out following things
1) date of dispatch of the vehicle from factory
2) date of arrival of vehicle at dealership.
3) date of manufacture of tyres
4) form 22
5) road worthiness cerificate
6) dealer done pdi on paper and talk with the engineer performed it.
7) xerox copy of User manual, read all notices given in it.

And most important ly Tata has prescribed special maintenance/service procedure(to be carried out by dealer) for long storage vehicle s, it is different from routine dealer pdi,get copy of it .

the interior, if it is dirty or unclean that means car has been used previosly by dealer/his children/td/staff,/previous custemer.

Absence of seat covering plastic is highly questionable /suspicious
Come on do it before registration. Dont get bullied by discount.
Please, decode the tyre manufacturing date , it's on the tyre side wall. It's must be more than 1 year.
Rubber of the tyres manufactured >6 months back especially if the car was parked under sun, for 1 year, is bound to harden alot, leading to
1) bumpy ride, especially on the undulated repaired pot holes . This reducd ride comfort is due to reduced flexibility of rubber.
2) cuts on sidewall while passing through pot holes,
Both problems demand tyrechange ( Rs 40 k/set) nullification of discount.

What about 'special maintenance\ service PRESCRIBED BY TML ' to be carried out for vehicle stored for >6 months/long storage.
If the dealer is not copertive, then contact TML ,urgently.

TML has issued notice in my owners manual ( page169) that if the'Long storage special maintenance/service as prescibed by TML' is not carried out, can seriously damage the car.

General manager of TASS has told me that it constitutes following things
1] change all rubber all plastic, housings as hard rubber/plastic leads to leakages in monsoon.
2 ] change tyres for reasons mentioned above
3] engine foundation rubber s,
4] all types of oils.
My concern is that you should not get lemon amongst cars stored for > 6 months, in lieu of socalled heavy discount.and not to frighten you.
After all its a question of 10 lakh.

The date on the transit insurance and form alongwith the insurance is 27th feb 2012
i.e date of despatch from pune

Arvi
@Arvi,
If the car is manufactured at Lucknow as per the decoded VIN, then why it is dispatched from Pune? What was the car doing at dealer after it was dispatched on feb 27.?

You said , the SE at joshi autozone allowed you to TD proposed vehicle to be bought.
I could not understand which vehicle? Your safari?

I have dragged my above mentioned posts from other threads.
I have posted photos of notices from my cars owner mannual, hope it is useful for you

@maran- No Dealer gives such huge discounts even if its going to be a discontinued model.
There is surely something fishy.
@Arvi- My strong suggestion, try a different model/colour from the stock which is less than 2 months. Do not take chances for a new car and repent your decision. Listen to your Mind once in a while.

I have not understood exactly how much discount is offered as year end/festive offer?
And how much is offered due to car being more than 6 month old?

Please check the odo reading and status of odo wire( disconnection), during TD.

[cheers]I agree to Tornado and carry a PDI list before you choose the car finally. Since its 6months old any specific reason it was not sold yet. Also since you have already decoded the VIN number is better you take some help from the members in the FORUM. Also since its the year end and also there is a new petition to the Finance Minister that the price of SUV(DIESEL) will be hiked close to 50K.

All the best Buddy !!!

One Question to all
The date on the transit insurance and form alongwith the insurance is 27th feb 2012
i.e date of despatch from pune
any suggestions, comments views or forewarnings
Cheers
Arvi
Pune??!!??
As per the VIN, the car should have been manufactured in Lucknow and as much I remember most(note: I said 'most' not 'all') of the North Indians get Safaris from Lucknow plant itself. Either cross check the VIN or question the guy who told you that the car will be coming/came from Pune.

@Arvi,
If the car is manufactured at Lucknow as per the decoded VIN, then why it is dispatched from Pune? What was the car doing at dealer after it was dispatched on feb 27.?
That's the real question, I think Tatas don't send all the Safaris to Pune before they are dispatched to other parts of the country.

I have posted photos of notices from my cars owner mannual, hope it is useful for you
I think these instructions are to be strictly followed and a strict, in fact brutally strict PDI is meant to be done of the vehicle.

@TSIVipul, Tornado, Black-Knight, Krish_go

Thanks for the input guys, and especially for the update on the long term storage that was to be done by Joshi.
When i went to the stock yard, the vehicle seemed in good condition. But yes it was parked under a tree and had a flat tyre. There was no evidence of water leakage into the body. The fact that it was under a tree may have something to do with that in case there is any problem with the water tightness. We did have very heavy monsoon here, but not too sure if it would put the water tightness to the test.
The ODO reading was 35 when i first saw it, 48 when i took it for test drive and 68 when it came to showroom for PDI. List of problems pointed out:
1. Replace front right side (Drivers) Tyre (flat and sidewall ruined)
2. Left windscreen wiper jumping: Replace.
3. Central console mat missing: find it and place it there.
4. Rear fog lamp (right side) bulb fused: replace
5. Rear fog lamp (left side): Moisture present: Replace.
6. Rear spoiler: Scratch marks: Paint or replace, They will replace.
7. Scratch marks on rear right passenger door inner handle: replace. (surprisingly was not there when i TD'ed it. Mother was in the back and on left side, and i did sit with her on the right before the TD)
8. Requested oil change, they wont do it.
9. Dampening seems ok.
10. No untoward sounds coming from vehicle.
11. Braking very good. Checked that.
12. Checked for EGR Problem (45-50 3rd gear and the same speed 4th gear.) None seen.
13. All lights ok except for rear fog lamps.
14. ODO was not disconnected, either for the TD or even when i saw it at the Yard. (did drive it up and down the yard there.
15 Tyres seem to be in good condition, no evidence of hardening, loss of lusture, drying or fading seen at the yard.

Thanks to you all for the input. will go to the guys and find out about the long term storage and pdi procedure.

Regards

^^See buddy, all you need to do now is carry the PDI list with you and then do it taking your own sweet time. I hope the vehicle will pass the PDI with a near perfect score.

^^Here it is.
This list prepared by TAI team covers every part and yes, when you do PDI, you will notice that even dealership people will also look at the list with eyefuls of surprises. TAKE THE LIST WITH YOU AND A PEN.
Things found right are ticked and found wrong are crossed, simple. At the end, make a list of things found wrong and ask dealership people to rectify them all and if serious issues are found then....

Arvi,
What about manufacturing date of the battery?, The battery cells die on long storage even if they seem ok now.
It is going to be more than one year back , so warranty will expire soon. So newly manufactured battery is must.

what about the seat wrapping plastic.?

Please enquire about `long storage servicing' at TATA directly before approching dealership guys, as they are likely to bluff.

Hey Tornado,
Thanks a ton for all the helpful hints you have provided. Sry i forgot to answer your question, yes i did get to TD the safari that i would be buying. They are also ok with me having it up on a ramp to check it out.
As far as the batt manufacturing date is concerned, havnt checked that out.
Just a small question, for a new batt provided with a new vehicle, would the batt warranty commence from date of purchase of vehicle or from date of manufacture?
Cheers

@Arvi, Battery warranty begins from 'date of purchase of battery' and not the car.In my case dealer said that he will give the extension of warranty period from his side., but I insisted that he has no right to do that as battery manufactuer won't take responsibility of car dealers promises. As battery was almost 10 to 11 months back manufactured and was lying unused, it was likely to give problems and I didn't wanted to visit TASS for socalled warranty benefits.
He agreed and replaced the battery before taking my thumb impression s.
