As Raja said the sardina red was amazing with that graphics and all but the new Gold the Graphics is horrible atleast they could have done graphics as suggestion as what Toyota does for Innova and Etios that could have been better. The Big graphics is horrible

Hello Guys,

I am new on this site and this is my first post. I have resort buisness in Dapoli which is 200 kms from pune in the konkan region. Currently I travel every week in my 2005 Maruti Zen Vxi CNG model. But since the roads are very bad and it is complete ghat section I want to change the vehicle. After looking at the road conditions and durabilty I found two options
1) Balero
2) Sumo Gold

Most of the times it will carry only 2-3 passengers and some luggage that will around 100kgs
My requirements are as follows

1) Good Strong AC as Konkan region is very hot and its difficult with out a good AC
2) Better mileage (Typical Indian).
3) I am not sure which suspensions will be better as the ghats(Bhor-Varand Ghat,Mangaon-Tamhini Ghat) are not all maintained so should take the abuse.
4) Which vehicle out of these two have better Resale Value
5) Out the two can some have comparision of NVH levels
I dont know anything about comfort level both the vehicles have and also the ride quality.

thx

^Welcome to our wonderful forum TAI! Looking at your requirements Bolero will suit you best,as it's very rugged and has better re-sale.However,you're best adviced to test drive these two SUVs yourself, and buy whichever you like more:)

Both have decent A/C, Bolero's is a little better.
2) Better mileage (Typical Indian).
Similar FE. But Sumo has a more powerful engine.
3) I am not sure which suspensions will be better as the ghats(Bhor-Varand Ghat,Mangaon-Tamhini Ghat) are not all maintained so should take the abuse.
Bolero is more abuse friendly.
4) Which vehicle out of these two have better Resale Value
Bolero has a better resale value.
5) Out the two can some have comparision of NVH levels
Sumo is quieter inside.

I dont know anything about comfort level both the vehicles have and also the ride quality.
Sumo is more spacious and comfortable. Both have a good ride quality.

Thanks raj_5004 and THE XOVER for quick inputs and your advice.

The new sumo gold is having dual ac vent for the middle row. Wouldnt this will cool the vehicle more better? (I guess this a silly question. By just out of curosity.)

The bolero if iam not mistaken only offers 1 year warranty . The sumo gold I think offers warranty of 3 years with a option of 1 year extended warranty too if iam not mistaken maybe xover can confirm this .

:offtopic:@konkantrip , I got distracted by your username .I have spent my whole childhood in konkan And during my adulthood my and my family's favorite weekend destination is Murud beach and fish market at Harnai beach .And I hope you are talking about the same.

Coming back to the topic konkan climate is humid and it demands space , if you want to be comfy.

I usually prefer Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar -poladpur route , bolero 's suspension would be comfortable over that route rather than than your usual Varandha and Tamhini route.

@Raja - You are right. The standard warranty is for 3 years & 100,000 Km - which ever is earlier. With the extended warranty, the Tata Sumo Gold has a 4 year warranty - i.e 36 Months + 12 months / 150000 kms whichever occurs earlier. See Tata Motors Customer Care :: Must Know

@konkantrip - I would recommend the Sumo Gold GX (not FX or any lower version) over the Bolero ZLX for the following reasons -
(a) More Space, Great middle seats and the last Front Facing benches (on a 9 seater) can actually seat 4 adults (6 feel tall). If you don't need the last row seats - then you can fold up for more luggage space
(b) Better A/C with middle row vents & more cooling comfort for your resort customers especially AFTER September through May.
(c) Bigger engine @ 3000 cc with better power at 85 BHP (@3000 rpm); better torque - 250Nm at 1000-2000 rpm (for GX model) - more pulling power at very low speeds. The Bolero engine specs are much lower; Torque @ 195 NM @ 1400-2200RPM & a 62 PS BHP @ 3200 rpm. See these websites for official specs. Bolero - Mahindra Bolero ZLX Specifications | Mahindra Bolero Specs | 4 Wheel Drive | Offroad SUV
Tata Sumo Gold - Tata Sumo Features | Sports Utility Vehicle | New SUV 2012 | Tata Sumo Gold - Tata Motors
(d) Lower turning radius (5 metres) which is boon in Konkan
(f) The new clutch (on GX @ 260 mm) is long lasting upto1 Lakh Km
(g) Better extended warranty than Bolero - 4 year warranty - i.e 36 Months + 12 months / 150000 kms whichever occurs earlier
(h) Almost same price as Bolero ZLX. A little less than 8.5 Lakhs on the road (OTR) for GX model - in Pune.

Please stay away from the CX, EX & LX models. These models do not get these new improvements.

The press release from 19 June 2013 has very specific details on the new model. All of these improvements are available in GX model. A subset are available in the FX model. 2013 Tata Sumo Gold Press Release

Yes tornado you are right. Currently I have running three home stay houses in partnership with the local people in murud and karde. Recently bought a new land on sea beach in palande village on harne murud road. Planning to complete the construction by december.

You got it absolutely right. I would like to add a very good AC is a must as well.

Yes you are right but right now I am having a CNG zen. If I go by Varnada route the trip is around 190 kms but if I go via Mahableshwar it takes around 238 kms. As there are no cng stations apart from pune have to follow the shortest route.

Thanks Twinstar that was really helpful. My yearly running would not more be than 15k so 4 years warranty would be really help full for me.

CR4 engine is available in all the variants only features are different.

Question is paying 8.5 for the top end model is worth?

One more observation as it was weekend was out with family the whole day. I saw at least 20 sumo golds with white number plates yesterday on Pune roads which were less than a month old ( how I know this is all were having the latest series i.e MH-12 JZ **** and MH 14 DN ****) Taking a closer look most of them were EX Models this was surprising and that bought the above question in my mind.

Also one more question can we add dual AC in EX.As this really needed in konkan. Looking at the ad of Narain Kartik he mentioned something about compressor. Also will dual AC affect the mileage as compared to a single AC?

It is worth it, if you plan to use the GX model for personal use. If you plan to use it for only ferrying passengers to/from your resort, then go for the FX model.

I think these were probably 2012 BS3 models available at a steep discount from Tata Motors in June/July 2013. Obviously, this is a conjecture and I have no means of backing this up. Having said this, the EX model is a big hit with fleet owners.

Try the FX model, it is about INR 40K lower in price than the GX model and has the roof AC & Power Steering. I think when the roof AC is being used, there will be some (<5% ?) drop in mileage - but not much. The roof AC is essentially extended blowers - there isn't an additional compressor.
