I strongly believe that if Tata manages to shorten / lessen the height / weight of the Gold, and do something about the looks they will have a winner in their hands. I have great respect for that bullet proof engine, which may be as good as the one used in the Qualis. We can now see that the sales are picking up slowly.

Your wish may be fulfilled sooner than you expect.Overdrive magazine reports that TATA is developing an under 4 meter Sumo, and it has been designed by their British design centre. Here is the link:Exclusive! Tata developing mini-Aria - Overdrive

Excerpt from the report:

A new sub-four metre Sumo Gold is also being developed which could come as early as next year. Prices will start from Rs 5 lakh approximately making it tremendous value for money. Sources reveal that the exterior design of the ‘mini’ Sumo is ready. It has been jointly designed by the Tata Motors European Technical Centre in Warwick and the design team in India. It will also be a seven-seater using a pair of jump seats.

What's the power output of 3.0l cr4 engine in sumo? Isn't it 90 ps. Isn't this the same engine that the old 3.0l safari used which churns out 115 bhp? Why Tata uses a 3.0l motor to produce this much reduced power? 3.0l engine adds enormous weight to the sumo whereas a de-tuned 2.2l dicor unit will reduce the substantial weight which itself improves overall dynamics and FE.

It actually produces 85hp, I don't know if its from Safari or not but Tata calls it the CR-4 which might be taken from the older version(Sumo Spacio) and make a CRDe to meet competition.

But the engine has amazing pulling power , the way tata has tuned the engine it makes the sumo gold a fun to drive car .

It's somewhere around 84-85 bhp I guess that also at about 3000 rpm or near redline.

Hmm, yes and no.
The engine block can be said same but not the engine. The block is exactly same in-line 4 cylinder 2956 cc with bore and stroke measuring 97mm X 100mm.
But what makes difference is the way they are turbocharged, the N/A zone is nearly same but still, nothing is same overall in both the engines. There is a lot of difference in the tuning.

Why Tata uses a 3.0l motor to produce this much reduced power?
Cost factor my buddy, 115-120 bhp means a lot more changes in the chassis and suspension setup to tame the 115 horses. Also for the purpose the vehicle is built, I don't find any reason to give 100+ horses under its hood.
Rest, the 3.0 motor has enough capability to produce even 200+ bhp.

3.0l engine adds enormous weight to the sumo whereas a de-tuned 2.2l dicor unit will reduce the substantial weight which itself improves overall dynamics and FE.
With the disadvantage of weight, this engines gives the Sumo some advantages too. For the people mover like Sumo, giving a detuned 2.2l Dicor can prove to be painfully underpowered in the N/A zone or lower revs. Though a lighter engine will give it agility and help improving dynamics but it will make the driving a painful affair, and if one adds a good VGT then again the costs will go on the higher side.

[:D] I was actually thinking loud about how to make the car more stable at relatively higher speeds. This mini-Sumo, if it does come bout will not be in the avatar of a people mover, right?

Nope, will retain the normal UV shape. After the Aria debacle I don't see TATA burning their hands twice and develop a people mover. And even if they do,it'll not be a BOF heavyweight but a light and supple monocoque one based on Manza platform(codenamed X1).Lets see how things pan out for TATA in future,so far things are really looking very promising.

The basic engine difference between sumo gold and earlier Tata safari is that Gold uses fixed geomatry turbo where as Safari had variable geomatry turbo. Variable geomatry turbo gives more power but simultaneously eats more fuel. Fixed geomatry turbo eats less fuel and has no turbo leg at all. Also it is BSIV complient. Considering the nature of Sumo it was observed that use of variable geomatry turbo does not give any additional benefit. The top speed difference is also negligable. Then why not to use more fuel efficient engine with no turbo leg . In Sumo Gold CX(CR4) I have got 16 kms per litre average on normal roads(without AC.).Low cubic capacity diesel engine with higher power(bhps) are OK only for highway cruising. In a serious SUVs or MUVS particularly with body over frame design you need bigger capacity engine to get strong pull at low speed. SUVs with unibody ( like XUV500 or duster) are more suitable for very high speed cruising. But they have limited off road capability.

Hi Doc, thanks for your inputs. The 407 engine has a dry weight of 270 kg. The CR4 3L is the same engine in disguise. Did you notice nose dive on hard braking? Is city driving enjoyable in this beast?

Yes this car has been designed to be used both on road and off road.I suggest you to take long test drive and expierence it yourself. Earlier Sumo was used only in taxi segment and corporate houses. In Mumbai at least it is now widely used as family car because of it's strength ,economic price and practicality. On Indian roads taller the vehicle , and shorter the turning radius more convenient it is to drive and handle.
