Price at this point is unknown but it is most likely going to stay at $350. Availability is expected to be around the time of the Windows 8.1 and in conjunction with the Surface Pro 2 release.

There will be no integrated LTE or NFC. Nokia’s tablet is also expected to come out slightly before the Surface 2 release.

Along with the report that notifications and multi-select Live Tile options are coming to Windows Phone 8.1, WPCentral reported that Microsoft is working on a Apple Siri competitor codenamed ‘Cortana’. The codename is not surprising given that Cortana is a fictional artificially intelligent (AI) character in the Microsoft’s own Halo video game series.

“…an overhaul to the TellMe service is in the works under the codename ‘Cortana’ that should give Siri a run for its money…”
In July, Microsoft Bing’s director Stefan Weitz in an interview to CNET revealed that Microsoft will release a Apple Siri/Google Now competitor only when they think it is revolutionary. And he told that when it gets released, they expect it to leapfrog their competitors.

“We have had internal debates about when to ship something. We could come out with something now like them, but it wouldn’t be state of the art. It’s too constrained to be an agent now,”
“We are not shipping until we have something more revolutionary than evolutionary.”
“There are teams working hot and heavy on this right now.”
Microsoft is already working on the backend for such AI agent with Bing Satori. Satori is a knowledge repository of over a billion objects digested in the last 3.5 years, it catalogs entities and the associated data and relationships among them all over the web. Based on the new report, I think Microsoft is ready to reveal something quite remarkable in early 2014.

Google knows every Wi-Fi password entered from an Android device

Here's a disturbing story. A published report on Saturday says that Google keeps a log of every Wi-Fi password ever entered into an Android device. According to the story, the list is not for human consumption which still doesn't take away from the idea that your Wi-Fi password is sitting inside a file at Mountain View. Android phones since Android 2.2 have sent back to Google the Wi-Fi password as a default setting on the handset.

Since it probably went right by most Android users, let's look at two builds. In Android 2.3.4, go to Settings and then Privacy. Om HTC models, Google gets your Wi-Fi password from an option called "Back up my settings," while on a Samsung device the naughty option reads "Back up my data." The unfortunate thing is that nowhere is Wi-Fi mentioned. The description reads "Back up current settings and application data."

In Android 4.2, go to Settings and then Backup and reset. The option is called "Back up my data," and the description for it reads "Back up application data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to Google servers".

If you want your mind boggled, consider that we are not talking about one Wi-Fi network at home. We are talking about every Wi-Fi network your Android phone logged into including the McDonald's down the street, or that Adult Film store that used to be a PhotoHut down the street. While Android users can opt out, all of this information could be turned over to law enforcement officials if Google is compelled to do so.

Did you ever buy a new Android phone, enter your Google account information, and the new phone instantly hooked up with your router? Google can decrypt the stored Wi-Fi passwords with just a Gmail username and password.

It might be too late for your original password, but it is not too late to opt out of Google's storing of your Wi-Fi password. Once you've done that, you should change your Wi-Fi password. And if this whole thing shocks you, you might be a little too trusting of those who hold your wireless life in their hands.

nothing new in it. on the contrary i find this feature excellent.

HTC one is my third android and once i sync my details all the wifi passwords also get synced in the new handset and saves me the hassle of entering/asking passwords all all places i regularly visit.

Microsoft had tested Surface phones: Report

NEW DELHI: Its Surface tablet may have failed to make much impact in the market, but Microsoft was planning to launch a smartphone under the same brand.

Interestingly, Microsoft had tested the Surface smartphone even as its partner Nokia flirted with Android as the possible operating system for its Lumia range of smartphones just prior to buyout of its mobile division.

A report by The Verge has stated that insiders associated with the Microsoft project have admitted that the company had built a number of prototypes on the Surface platform as part of the tests. The report states that Terry Myerson, the current head of Windows Phone and XBox operating systems, was heading the project.

The news comes in the wake of the recent New York Times report that Nokia had been testing Android on some of its phones, including the top-end Lumia devices. A Nokia team reportedly began testing Android on Lumia handsets long before the company signed the dotted line on acquisition by Microsoft of its mobile business.

The lower-than-expected response to the Lumia devices that run exclusively on Windows Phone platform seems to have had forced both the companies to work on the "Plan B" options as the deal's tenure was nearing its end.

Nokia is currently the largest marketshare holder of Windows Phone OS with over 80% market share among all Windows devices. Instead of a variety of phone makers using Windows Phone like they do with Android, Nokia has been sole user of the Microsoft phone OS.

According to the NYT report, Nokia using Android wasn't a part of Microsoft's acquisition discussions with the company. However, Microsoft executives were aware of the existence of the Nokia Android project.

Analysts believe that the Nokia plan may have hastened Microsoft's decision to acquire Nokia. The Finnish handset maker was also reportedly not happy with Microsoft's efforts to lower the prices of the Windows Phone devices to lure more buyers. The project for cheaper Windows Phone devices had also been codenamed as " Tango."

According to another report in The Verge, Nokia had plans of unveiling an Android-powered Asha device in 2014 after the end of the deal.

Nokia and Microsoft made the deal to use Windows Phone OS in 2011 and the former had the option to exit the partnership at the end of 2014. Now with the acquisition formalised, both the projects of Nokia and Microsoft seem to have gone on a backburner, with reports suggesting that both the possibilities of an Android-run Nokia phone and a Windows Surface phone seem a distant reality.

Alleged Information Of Windows Phone GDR3 Notification System Leaked

The leaks of the next version of Windows Phone 8.1 has started. First, the codename for Windows Phone 8.1 as ‘Blue’ is confirmed via screenshots. You will be able to set Kids Corner without any password and there are some info on how the hardware buttons work. Swiping left on Start screen won’t go to notification center as we all expect. Read more about it here.

Coming to Lumia BitterSweet Shimmer which will be released along with Windows Phone GDR3, there will be a different notification system as opposed to the current one where you can just swipe away the incoming notification. There are different types of notifications. With actionable notifications such as Facebook comments, when a notification comes, you will be able to swipe to the right to ignore it or swipe it down to make a quick reply without even opening the Facebook app.

Apart from the new notification system, there will be little features such as battery percentage indicator, screen rotation lock and more.

Guys, from quite some time this thread has just turned into a "newspaper" where all I get to read are news, news and just news of releases, what new is happening and what now. For this very reason I have stopped visiting this thread. [frustration]

This thread was to head-on compare Android vs. Windows and not what is happening in the two. For that purpose we have a better thread : http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/forums/gadgets-more/13813-whats-hot-mobile-phone-industry.html

Above thread covers one and all mobile platform so all please post all "NEWS" in above thread only and leave "Android v/s Windows" thread for the purpose it was created.

Unless it has a direct reference to windows - dont see relevance here. If you want to add specific inputs to do a comparo beyond an article - that is fine here. But for new apps and simple news, this section doesnt make any sense.

I have an Android and I am very satisfied with it. It has tons of free aplications and they are applications that I use every day, not games. Windows is good, but I am sticking to Android :)
