Guys,

Apologies for not updating the thread. The draw was out and I couldn't get lucky to get my hands on a DSLR. [cry].

I am confused between the Nikon D5100 and D5200.
Gurus, please help me choose one.
Is the D5200 worth the price difference over the D5100? does having 39AF points instead of 11 makes a significant difference along with 1 more fps in the real world or image quality?
This will be my first dslr and I have no prior exp with one.
Please help me

The 9 grand difference between the two is nowhere near justified.

When in confusion between Body and lens, always go for lens.

Go for D5200. It won't disappoint you.

No one but you can decide if you need more focus points. In general, you can use just the center focus point to focus on the subject and then recompose the camera to frame the shot as you would like and take the picture. Now the focus and recompose method is NOT recommended if you are shooting portraits wide open because of the shallow DoF. In this case, it is better to frame your shot and choose your focus point (or better yet: manually focus). And, more focus points come in handy when you are trying to continuously track/focus on moving subjects.... say birds taking flight.

Also the 1fps burst mode difference will matter if you are doing high speed photography. like flying birds for example.

If you intend to do landscapes/stills/family/kids, dont even bother.

PS: Found a neat youtube video

I'd say go for Sony Alpha, I was also in same dillema some days back and at the end bought the Sony Alpha finding it more advanced and of course Sony A.S.S. too.

I'd recommend you to at least go through Alpha too once before making the purchase.(BTW, mine is lying unused now as I find it boring - it hasn't got an engine :stupid:)

Arent the lenses an issue for the Alpha?
Not at all buddy, go to market and you will get the lens you need. In fact there is a feature of pre-processing which shows how the pic you are going to click is gonna appear and hence you need not to make any more hit and trials like in other DSLRs to get that perfect shot.
This not only make using a DSLR an easy affair but also makes the learning quick too, else using a DSLR definitely needs a whole lot of experience before you start clicking the good shots.

Friends, can you suggest a DSLR for me. I am no expert. I have seen both Nikon & Cannon. There is a similar model of Cannon against Nikon's D3200 allowing another lens for extra 4k. Nikon has another base model D3100. I opted D3200 for it has more mega pixels. Pl suggest for me. I have a plan to take photos Nature like Mountains, wild life.

There isn’t any shortcut in DSLR photography. Until and unless you know what you are doing, you are wasting your money and time, be it a Nikon, Canon or Sony. One learns it through experience and experimentations. It doesn’t come in a day or two.

When you choose a body, availability/selection of compatible lenses should be one of the most important priorities. You will only realize it once you outgrow your kit Lens and AF /P&S world. There is a reason why Nikons and Canons are preferred more and availability of lens options/ selection is one of the major reasons.

Megapixels are worst criteria to choose on a DSLR.
The fact that you are basing your decision on megapixels alone shows that you know nothing of photogrphy.

You could get a D3300 + 18-55 kit + a Zoom up to 200mm or 300mm. Snapdeal.com has some good offers.

You are right and for that at very beginning I admitted it
I am no expert.
. I have handled only aim & shot cameras, and never bothered by megapixels since photos were upto my expectation. The problem arouse when this year we visited Darjeeling and had the blessing to observe Kanchenjunga during sunrise. We shot the view with our modest camera. But this time details of beauty could not be captured. So I thought for a better camera. So before buying one I sought your expert advice. Thanks for it.[:D]
