Ray-Ban Shama Shades sunglasses can recharge your smartphone on solar power

Wouldn’t it be nice if your sunglasses could store solar power to recharge your smartphone? That’s exactly what the Ray-Ban Shama Shades do for your iPhone. US-based Indian designer Sayalee Kaluskar, is the inventor of this cool idea.

The genius of the concept lies in how simple and practical it is. Two solar panels are cut out to fit the right and left arms of the eyewear. Their presence is very discreet and only shows as gridded designs on either side. While you’re out in the sun, the device gathers solar energy.

When your handset needs a shot of extra power, simply take one or both of the detachable arms and attach it to your phone via the charging port. In this case, we’d be talking about the Lightning connector of course. To see the pair in action, check out the video Ray-Ban Shama Shades on Vimeo

This alternate method of topping up the charge on a user’s iPhone has been created as part of a project for Miami Ad School, San Francisco. It’s a pity it’s not in the market as yet. But it’s a great idea, so here’s to hoping the concept will be picked up by the brand.

Here’s a link to the designer’s page for those of you who want to read more on this.

Intex becomes first Indian co to launch Octacore smartphone

NEW DELHI: Computer peripherals maker Intex Technologies said Monday that it had become the first local handset maker to begin selling Octacore smartphone in India which will allow users to do more with their smartphones as it offers faster processing speeds.

Octacore essentially means eight processing cores built in together, which allows users to run multiple applications at the same time without the phone coming to stand still or heating up. Multi-core chipsets are made by several companies .

Delhi-based Intex has tied up with MediaTek and aims to bring the commercial form of the device in January 2014. Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, business head for mobile phones, told ET that the company was likely to price the 6-inch dual-SIM smartphone with a 7 mm thickness for around Rs 20,000.

ET has learnt that Micromax Informatics is also planning to come out with the news of launching an octa-core device sometime next year. The company did not comment on ET's queries about the device plans.

Octacore is small but fast growing segment within smartphones after Samsung launched the S4 with the Exynos 5 octa-core processor early this year. Rival handset maker Huawei, which has little presence in India, also plans to come out with smartphones on the ultra-fast processor.

International media reports quoted Huawei's president Xu Xin Quan as he wrote on his Weibo account, that the next version of the Ascend P6, the P6S, will come with a new octa-core processor.

With Indian handset makers entering the high processing game, prices of high-end handsets could come down substantially. However, it remains to be seen how many octa-core smartphones ultimately come out from the local device makers to drive any kind of scale

Google to Pay $17 Million Settlement to States in Safari Privacy Circumvention Case - Mac Rumors

Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia have agreed to a $17 million settlement with Google over the company's circumvention of privacy settings in Safari, reports PCWorld. Google previously agreed to a $22.5 million settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to settle a similar case between the company and the federal government.

Google took advantage of a loophole in Safari's privacy settings designed to prevent placement of third-party cookies by default, using invisible web forms to trick Safari into thinking that users had interacted with Google's ads and thus allowing cookies to be placed on the device.

Quote:
"Consumers should be able to know whether there are other eyes surfing the web with them," [New York Attorney General Eric] Schneiderman said in a statement. "By tracking millions of people without their knowledge, Google violated not only their privacy, but also their trust."

Google said it was pleased to reach the settlement. "We work hard to get privacy right at Google and have taken steps to remove the ad cookies, which collected no personal information, from Apple's browsers," a spokeswoman said by email.
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin were all involved in the settlement.

The Galaxy Gear is reportedly an epic flop, has sold under 50,000 units

WEARABLES November 18, 2013 at 5:05 PM
As amazing as it seems, Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch may be an even bigger bomb than the ill-fated Facebook-centric HTC First smartphone. BusinessKorea reports that Samsung has sold less than 50,000 Galaxy Gears so far, a stunningly low number that would put even the worst flops released this year to shame. That Samsung’s device has reportedly flopped this badly is rather surprising since the company poured a lot of money into an ad campaign designed to highlight its first-ever smartwatch. Samsung has insisted that the Gear is just the first step in the long evolution of the smartwatch, with one executive even comparing it an unripened tomato. If sales figures of under 50,000 sold are accurate, however, then it seems the device looks much more like a rotten tomato to many consumers.

Epic Trolling from Samsung

This morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially, the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.

samsung-pays-apple-1-billion-sending-30-trucks-full-of-5-cents-coins

The funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send the creators of the iPhone their billion dollars in the way they deem best.

This dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives as they will need to put in long hours counting all that money, to check if it is all there and to try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept all the coins.

Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it.

You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law.

A total of 20 billion coins, delivery hope to finish this week.

Let’s see how Apple will respond to this.

Nokia shareholders approve Microsoft
Nokia shareholders have today approved the Microsoft deal to purchase the company's phone division. The Financial Times reports that 99.7 percent of participating shareholders (around 5,000 attended the vote) were in favour of the deal going through. Microsoft will now integrate the Nokia division into Redmond, taking control of future Lumia and Asha products.

The deal between the two tech giants is expected to be finalised during Q1 2014. Microsoft would then control both the Lumia and Asha lines of hardware currently produced by Nokia. The total cost of the deal will set Microsoft back €5.44 billion, with €3.79 billion for Nokia's handset business, €1.65 billion for the portfolio of patents and finally a four-year license for Nokia's HERE mapping service.

Redmond has funded Nokia €1.5 billion of "immediate financing" to help with cash flow. We spoke with Nokia's Stuart Ryan, Director of Maps and Everyday Mobility at HERE, last week who explained briefly how the Microsoft and Nokia partnership would continue to operate should the deal go ahead, with HERE services continuing to be utilised by Microsoft for Windows, Windows Phone and its Bing search engine.

As for the Lumia and Asha brands, it's still not clear what Microsoft plans to do, though the company has in the past revealed plans to unify branding.

This deal will also see Nokia CEO Stephen Elop return to Microsoft to lead the devices division. As for Microsoft itself, CEO Steve Ballmer is expected to step down and retire next year, though a replacement is yet to be officially named. Nokia's Elop is viewed as the favourite in the running for the position at Microsoft.

What will Nokia be left with post-takeover? The Finnish company will focus on Nokia Solutions & Networks (NSN - previously Nokia Siemens Solutions), HERE services and mapping, as well as a licensing and development division.

Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 805 processor with 'Ultra HD' mobile video

If you're still enjoying that fresh Snapdragon 800 CPU, guess what? Qualcomm's just trumped it with a new model: the Snapdragon 805 'Ultra HD' quad-core processor. The most headline-grabbing feature is UltraHD video playback on your tablet, smartphone or Smart TV -- so you can finally watch that 4K video you recorded. To do that, it's packing the latest Adreno 420 GPU, which Qualcomm claims has as much as 40 percent more graphics horsepower than previous models. On top of that, the Krait 450 CPU's four cores will each run at up to 2.5GHz and communicate with memory at 25.6 GB/second max, to make all apps run faster.

The new processor will also come with the 28nm Gobi MDM9x25 modem announced earlier this year, in order to support LTE carrier aggregation (and the resulting higher speeds) and 150Mbps LTE 4. Another option will be a new LTE modem, the 20nm Gobi MDM9x35, which pairs with the WTR3925 chip to bring up to 300Mbps download speeds via LTE advanced. Qualcomm said that both chips support "all carrier aggregation band combinations approved by 3GPP" while enabling manufacturers to bring LTE devices to market faster. Finally, there's a new mobile camera processor that supports gigapixel throughput and gyro-based image stabilization, for smoother video recording and faster image processing. All of that will come in a package that consumes less power, according to Qualcomm, who added that owning a Snapdragon 805-equipped device will be like "having an UltraHD theater in your pocket." Don't sell that Galaxy Note 3 just yet, though -- Qualcomm said manufacturer sampling won't start until next year, meaning actual devices are still a ways off.

There's nothing worse than scratching up the back of your pristine smartphone, either from keys or an unfortunate drop on the concrete. It's a terrible feeling, and LG wants to help.

The company's new G Flex smartphone, which features a curved display, comes with a self-healing exterior that fixes all the little bumps and bruises nearly in real time. YouTube user Marques Brownlee posted a video of the not-yet-launched device and experimented with how capable the G Flex is; the results are astonishing.

Like magic, scratches from even a knife slowly disappear into the casing. Heat helps speed up the healing process, too, so rubbing your hands on the cover minimizes scratches much more quickly. You can push the sides of the curved display, essentially flattening it out before it slowly resumes its natural bended position.

Now, if only it could self heal itself from cracked screens
