Re: Interesting and Unknown Features in Automobiles

There are several unknown and interesting features in automobiles. Starting this thread to discuss on unknown & interesting facts.

To start with, after entering the fuel station many of us start thinking which side the fuel lid is positioned (this happens normally with a new car or when we are new to a car) Just look at the instrument cluster / Fuel gauge. Arrow symbol on the side denotes the location of fuel lid in the car

PS: There are few cars without this marking. If you have one such example, the only way is to confirm physically

Adding few reference images from Hyndai i20, Nissan Sunny & Maruti Swift[:)]

In the attached pictures Arrow mark near the fuel symbol points to left side and in Swift,Sunny & i20 fuel lids are at left side of the car i guess.

Just found this out!!!

FINALLY FOUND SOMETHING on my car!!! If fellow Beat owners think the key remote is too basic (or even otherwise), think again. If you hold down both the 'Lock' and 'unlock' buttons simultaneously, the feature called Panic Alarm activates.

This might sound useless - All this does is sound the burglar alarm. Maybe till the battery runs flat - but the point is if you are attacked or anything in the parking lots like the movies, you might be able to attract attention by using this (related: http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/f...-put-your-car-keys-beside-your-bed-night.html ).

Now you may know this or other cars may have this, but I didn't know and the excitement might make me a behave like a psycho which I usually don't. Just sat in the car, was waiting for others to get in, and suddenly it occurred to me - "I think the Zest's panic alarm works by holding down both L and UL buttons at once - let me try..." and I went almost screaming back to the house to inform others!

Will be using it if any pesky kids try to mess around with the car [evil] For the record, I have the original key which looks like the attached pic. It's a GM genuine accessories key.

@ Swift owners please try this and reply. Kinda curious [roll]

Zest's infotainment system gets a 'one hour mode', which allows you to use the ICE for 60 minutes after the ignition is turned off.

Pretty nifty when your wifey has gone for shopping and you are waiting outside [frustration]

Then keep the keys with you!

But, this is a useful feature - in case somebody takes longer than expected or something like that. This is available in the Polo too, but it may run till the universe ends or the battery is flat. So not safe. They were [sleep] while designing this (VW)

This feature is in Figo too. However, it's "One Hour" from the time any action done in the ICE. So ideally, the "One Hour" keeps extending everytime you touch the ICE. Thus you maybe thinking it's running forever!

Well, this might be the case but I don't own it. Took a test drive and found that the ICE unit rounds even when ignition is OFF. And there was nothing stating that it turns off after an hour! Hence came to this conclusion.

Got it. Here is how it works in Figo and guess, Polo or Zest may not be much different. Please do mention in case.

The ICE will be on if the Ignition is in "1" position. That means, if you just turn the engine off, and keep it in "1" position the ICE will continue to run if it was running. However, a full shut of the ignition to "0" position, the ICE goes off too. Also, if the ICE was aborted this way and not by "Power Off" button, then it will restart the moment you on the ignition to "1" position anytime again.

If the ICE is started with Power On button when the when the Ignition is in "0" position or simply even without key inserted, the ICE displays as "One Hour" and works as I mentioned in the previous post.

This recalls a special feature of Figo to be called out here in relevance.

As mentioned above, if the ICE is not manually powered off, but will go off if the ignition is shut to "0" position. However, if the Mobile is paired with ICE over Bluetooth and on a call, the ICE won't shut until the call is completed, disconnected by either party. Thoughtful, isn't it? [:D][clap]

Again I don't know if other cars have this.

Chevy Beat:
The Power Steering module continues to power the steering after the car is switched off, so that one can engage Steering Lock without much effort!

Most of the cars today has a mechanical turn-off switch for turn indicator lights. But what made me amazed is that when i saw an electronic turn-off for turn indicator feature of old FIAT 1100D (1960s),don't know if this feature is available for later launched Premier Padminis. What make this feature complex is that, the driver have to manually disable the switch later:biggrin:.
Please pardon me if this feature is available for modern cars.

Opel Astra - One Touch up/down on all windows. Most Astra owners do not know about this because if the car battery is disconnected then a power window reset procedure should be performed to activate the automatic up/down mode which may not be mentioned in the owner's manual I think. I got it from an Astra forum and tried it on my '97 Astra and was surprised to see it in action. One touch up/down works on all four windows from all switches (not just from driver side like in some cars) though there is no anti-pinch so one should be careful before using these features...

Other features that I find special on a 90's sub 10lac car are damped ashtray release, fuel octane selector switch, cooled glovebox, unique interior light switch(pull headlamp knob), pollen filter, lights inside ashtray, boot, glovebox and a complex deadlock system on doors. It had a digital speedometer too but it only displays for a few seconds in the TID display unit when pressing combination buttons. Features like power antenna were a cool party trick but it was available on similar other cars in that price bracket that time. Also on meter console there were a lot of empty indications like abs, traction control etc. which were omitted for Indian version, but one can put lights inside these and it will be a nice bling-bling when you turn ON the car and fool your friends that you have all these features on your age old car [:D]

The club variant once came with dvd, roof lcd and wireless headphones which were unheard of for a sedan in that price bracket
