NHTSA confirms 60+ complaints about repaired Toyotas

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US has received more than 60 complaints about unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles after they have been serviced as a part of their recalls.
The NHTSA’s David Strickland said the administration had begun to take action concerning the complaints.
“NHTSA has already started contacting consumers about these complaints to get to the bottom of the problem and to make sure Toyota is doing everything possible to make its vehicles safe,” he said.
Toyota is currently in the process of recalling around 9.5 million vehicles across the globe – 5.4 million for floor mat-related brake pedal jamming and 4.1 million over sticking accelerator pedals.
But the complaints about continued pedal faults could mean the source of the problem is different to earlier findings by Toyota and the NHTSA.
The NHTSA said if the recall repairs are not solving the problems Toyota may be ordered to develop a new fix, potentially leading to another recall.
“If Toyota owners are still experiencing sudden acceleration incidents after taking their cars to the dealership, we want to know about it,” Mr Strickland said.
Yesterday, Toyota spokeswoman, Celeste Migliore, told the LA Times that Toyota was at that stage unaware of any complaints made to the NHTSA about the Avalon, Camry and Matrix models allegedly involved.
“We very much would like to have any of those individuals who claim they’ve had unintended acceleration after the fix to go back to the dealership. If there was an accident, we want to see the vehicle and the driver and the accident report,” Ms Migliore said.
Meanwhile, US Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, is considering making brake override systems mandatory in all new cars to avoid a repeat of the unintended acceleration debacle dogging Toyota.
While not a solution to the problem on their own, override systems give complete priority to the brake pedal when pressed in tandem with the accelerator and cancel throttle input.

Seems the bad times for Toyota are not over yet!!

Maybe this override systems can be used! But can they be done in the existing cars??

I suspect it can only be made mandatory for new cars ... retrofitting does not seem all that simple.

Honda recalls 412,000 US vehicles on 'soft' brakes

Economictimes
Honda has recalled some 412,000 vehicles in the United States because customers complained their brakes felt "soft," the Japanese

automaker said on Tuesday.

Honda said the problem is caused by air accumulating in a "vehicle stability assist modulator" which causes the pedal to get closer to the floor than normal before the vehicle stops.

This latest action comes a month after Japan's second-biggest carmaker recalled more than 400,000 vehicles to fix airbags that it said can explode and spray out potentially deadly metal shards.

GM S Korea unit recalls 60,000 Cruze, Captiva models

Economictimes
General Motors Co's South Korean unit plans to recall some 60,000 of the Chevy Cruze small car and the Captiva sports utility vehicle (SUV)
in South Korea, the government and the company said on Sunday.

GM Daewoo Auto & Technology will recall 45,957 of the Captiva, which is sold as the Winstorm in South Korea, due to defects with the steering system, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.

It is set to recall the SUVs which were made between April 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007, the ministry said in a statement.

The company also plans to recall 12,604 of the Chevy Cruze sedan, which is sold as the Lacetti Premiere locally, due to defects with fuel supply pipes, the ministry said.

The recall applies to cars produced between September 25, 2009 and March 2, 2010.

Oh, So the Recall Mania isn't over yet. As posted above, GM-Daewoo has recalled a lot of their Cruze and Captiva Models and this was the statement by one of their Official:

"GM plans to recall the models with the problems in other countries. But every country has different rules and standards and each GM operation will decide the size and timing of recalls of those cars depending on their own situations"

Not a re-call but another quality issue from Toyota Global:

""Toyota says it will temporarily stop selling the Lexus GX460 after Consumer Reports said the SUV carried an unusually high risk of a rollover accident during certain types of turns. In the latest blow to Toyota’s reputation, the Japanese automaker says it will suspend sales of the SUV while it conducts its own testing. Consumer Reports says that in handling tests, the seven-seat SUV slid until it was nearly sideways before the electronic stability system regained control.
The magazine says this could lead to a rollover accident in real-world driving. It gave the GX460 a rare “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk” label until the problem is fixed.
Toyota has sold about 5,000 GX460s in the three months since it went on sale. It is not covered by Toyota’s faulty gas-pedal recalls."" (source: carwale.com)

Suzuki recalls about 10,000 Altos in Europe

Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor Corp is recalling the automatic transmission version of its compact car 'Alto' in Europe, which is sold under the brand A-Star in India.

The recall will, however, not have any impact on the Indian market as its subsidiary Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), which produces the car only at its Manesar plant, does not sell the automatic transmission version here.
