Buying a DSLR Bag - My opinions

Very few of us have the luxury of a nearby brick-and-mortar-shop with enough range of Camera Bags to try before buying, that too with decent price. I could not locate convincing user opinion/reviews on Bags targeted for Enthusiasts and Amateurs. I had to rely on YouTube videos before choosing my recent acquisition.

What I bought, can fit in a DSLR Body (like D5300 / EOS 700) mounted with a Prime Lens plus a short-to-medium Zoom Lens, a Spare Battery etc. You can read about the unbelievable utility of the bag in my thread here http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/f...ny-nex-5r-mirrorless-camera-2.html#post413825.

NOTE: While choosing a Camera Bag one needs to look seriously into the inside and outside dimensions of a Bag and the Padding.

Did you have to pay the shipping charge? Or you had to just post it at the Sigma center in your city?
Nothing as of now. It was sent through the Nikon dealer from whom I bought the Sigma.
Got the Lens back. Still had to AF fine tune at -10 on my camera body for a precise focus. SIGMA wanted me to send them the camera body as well for accurate focus adjustment, which I didn't, though I knew that is the right way to go.

Though the AF performance is not consistent, at least on average is better after the adjustment.

Cost : Nothing, including shipping charges. SIGMA has assured to do it again if I am not satisfied. I will have to send the lens with my Camera body though.

That's good to hear. But this is something expected for such an expensive product. [;)]

The term “ expensive” is very relative.[;)]

AF calibration isn't something new and are often carried out with many lenses by enthusiasts in order to get more accurate output. It is for the same reason higher end cameras come with an 'AF-Fine tune' feature.

Though it costs around Rs. 60k, the Sigma 150-500 is still the cheapest telephoto lens available in the market to get to 500 mm. The other available options are Tamron 150-600 which is about 30k more expensive. The Nikkor [Nikon] is still more expensive. To get this focal length, the budget option from Nikon is the Nikkor 300 mm F4 prime + TC [ 14/17] which should set you back by a bit more than 1 lakh. The latter still doesn’t give you the convenience of a zoom and has no VR as well, but is a superb prime glass with spot on AF accuracy and precision.

If you are a birding enthusiast, 300mm isn't good enough in most situations. The Sigma 150-500 with AF tuned to match your camera body is still a good choice when shooting in moderate to good light.

Got my Sigma 150-500 replaced with a new one today as the first copy had some quality issues. Did a quick test indoor. The AF worked fine [no AF focus issues/ well within the tolerance limits of my camera bodies] and sharpness seemed better on my new D610 now. But then it is winter here- wet, cold and dark = no scope for any exercise until Feb.

May I know the reason please? I mean was the performance of the D7000 poor?

Nope !

Definitely NOT ! It's a fantastic piece of machine.
Bro, I don't understand. Your last purchase was so quick. And when you bought the D7000, you told you were bankrupt (which was obviously a joke), but I thought you would keep it for sometime. [lol][surprise]

Could you please compare the image quality of both the bodies with the same lens and position?

Dear Friends,

I am planning a purchase of Nikon D5300 along with its kit lens 18-55 VR-2. Please advice me a lens to compensate my SONY HX 200V (40X zoom) in terms of zooming capacity. Cost is one of the factors to take the decision. I am not selling off my SONY will keep them both. Please advice....

I learn that the maximum reach is 810mm with your Sony. There is no budget lens to get that reach on a DSLR.

  • What is your budget ?
I don’t believe in one DSLR for learning and then buy another once you think you have learnt the basics. Get a decent gear based on your area of interest and budget.

Thanks for the info. But if 20 to 25K is my price range for a zoom lens then what would be best one.
The best buy should be the Nikkor 70-300 VR but you will need to stretch your budget a bit to about 30-32k.
You also have Nikkor 55-300 VR which is well within your budget. I used to own it for a couple of years and it’s not a slouch at all.
If you have the budget, get the 70-300 VR, if not, a more flexible [wider] and cheaper 55-300 VR should do just fine.
