Re: Tata Aria Pride Ownership Review – TAI’s First!
Well guys first of all am extremely sorry for delaying updates to this thread because i know many people are expecting a detailed for the much anticipated car from TATA. But such is my schedule these days that i don get free time to start writing a report after viewing the regular updates in TAI'S other threads!
The car as of now has clocked close to 950KMS already and is due for first service soon! Yes , our running is pretty high and also a trip to Pondicherry added more KMS to the ODO! With so much KMS driven i have got a fair idea of how the car behaves and i feel everything will improve further after the first service!
And to all reading this , many people think this is a competition to Innova but no it is not! The Aria is costlier than the Innova and so hence far better than the Innova in all aspects(of course reliability of Aria is questionable)!
Why the Aria first of all??!! Many people would have confused why the heck did i choose another TATA car after having so much problems with my Safari! But well , that is how it goes and am finally glad that i picked Aria ahead of Fortuner!
Several months back we decided we have to replace our ageing Safari mainly because of the CHECK ENGINE problem which keeps blinking often and the people at the A.S.S had no clue why that was happening! Dad decided a budget of 20Lakhs +/-2Lakhs. Initially i was more inclined towards a luxury sedan as i am a bit of performance enthusiast! But after many thoughts and some valuable advice from many friends here in TAI decided to go ahead with another SUV itself! Thanks to our profession also , the car would be travelling through really non-existent roads and a luxury sedan is not meant to traverse through those roads daily!
So after deciding its going to be an SUV the main contenders were Fortuner , Captiva , Santa-Fe and Aria! Dad said its going to be entirely be my decision and he is happy with all the above cars! Dad ruled out Endeavour fearing Ford's costlier maintenance. So here i am given the responsibility to choose a car which would suit all our needs and i cannot afford to go wrong given the amount that is at stake!
Dad and i really liked the Fortuner very much and we almost decided to book one without even a TD! Dad has some contacts in Lanson Toyota and so the car will be given to us inside two months! I said to dad lets wait for sometime , i want to TD the Fortuner. So off i went to check out the Fortuner one fine morning and after sitting inside the car i was utterly dejected! The interiors were the same as in Innnova and sitting inside the car din give me that premium feeling! Asked for a TD and got one immediately! TD was good , though the engine was slightly on the noisier side , the pick-up and acceleration was excellent! And Toyota's are known to be reliable in the longer run! But the lack of some of the comfort and convenience features even after paying 22Lakhs OTR to get a premium car was disappointing! That is what made me put the Fortuner on hold!
The next car i loved was the Captiva! Driving the Captiva was amazing and it was even a great performer than the Fortuner. I was very much impressed with the car as it had some of the comfort and convenience features too (read show-off) like sun-roof , retractable ORVM'S etc etc! Compared to the Fortuner i get more for what i pay with the Captiva! But one thing that kept me off was Chevy's A.S.S! I couldn find a long-term ownership report of Captiva anywhere online and so i was not willing to take a risk. Also our member Surendar owns a Captiva , his review was not very encouraging to go ahead with the purchase! So Captiva was also on hold!
And by this time slowly the launch of Aria and Santa-Fe comes around in our forum and i was surprised seeing the feature list of Aria and the specs of Santa-Fe! I tell dad to wait for the launch of both these cars.
Finally Aria was launched one fine evening and i was surprised seeing the price and feature list of Aria! Dad is kinda TATA fan! He drove TATA Sierra for around 12 years , Safari for 4 years and now Aria , this must explain his craze towards TATA cars! I showed him the pictures , he said he din like the car! Its looking the same as Innova , no intimidating road presence! I said to him lets wait till we see the car in person! Though I also din like the same Safari engine which is there in Aria! I said to him clearly that if the Aria rattles and squeaks and performs lousily like the Safari , we are not buying it!
And next almost after few days later the Santa-Fe was launched! The feature list and specs were even more impressive! The Interiors were very luxurious and dad liked the courteous attitude which we receive in Hyundai(while servicing Verna) and so he had no problems in buying a Hyundai! The only thing which put me off was the price! It was a cool 4 Lakhs costlier than all the Fortuner! Dad was not willing to pay a premium for getting the Santa-Fe , so Santa-Fe ruled out almost instantly!
Dad has some contacts even in Concorde motors so got the TD almost immediately the TD car arrived in Chennai! After TD i was really impressed with TATA for coming up with such an amazing product! Of course Aria has some negatives too but every car has some negatives and i found out that Aria almost satisfied all our needs and it was the cheapest of the lot! I personally found the Aria to be VFM and so i decided its going to be the Aria! Dad also being a TATA fan he agreed with the Aria!
What color now! Color is always an interesting debate at home! Black ruled out almost instantly at home! Next preferred colors were silver and pearl white! I was not really interested in rest of the colors! Since we already have a silver car at home i thought we will go ahead with White! Dad also likes white very much since our Sierra was also White! Interiors choice i like Beige but sadly beige option is not there in top-end version!

The only choices left were black and black or black and plum interiors. I thought black and plum will not go well with a white car. So decided we will go ahead with black and black interiors!
Okay , now what variant? Dad wanted to go ahead with basic variant! I was like are you crazy for that we can go ahead with Innova! I was clear i wanted a fully loaded top-end Pride variant only since we had the budget! I don like compromising when it comes to cars , if i decide to buy a car it must be the top-end variant(of course Bmw's and Merc's not included). C mon when you can afford to spend 13 Lakhs for the base variant why not push for 2 more Lakhs and enjoy all the features that comes along with the car! There is no point in buying a basic model when it comes to luxury cars that is cars above 12 Lakhs. This is my view!
Date of Booking FInally i went on 18th October 2010 to book the car with an advance cheque! And i was glad to hear when the SE told that i am first person to book the Aria in Chennai! The SE promised delivery inside 6 weeks. Dad was okay with it since he can mobilize funds for the car within this period.
The agonizing waiting period! As each day i was getting very much excited about the car! And finally when their promised 6 weeks were over i got a bit frustrated! I called them up and they said the car has just begun from the factory! And finally one fine day in last week of December i got a call from them saying my car has arrived! I was very happy and went for PDI the next day and found the car to be satisfactory! I loved the car in pearl white!
The D-Day And finally after so much struggles in the RTO(refer previous posts) the car got registered on 10th Jan 2011. I asked for delivery on the same day but the SE said that cleaning will take sometime and waxing also needs to be done so asked me to come next day morning! I was bit sad but just another night is nothing when compared to the long wait before! I woke up at 7AM the next day that is 11/1/11 (yes waking up at 7 in the morning during semester holidays is not my norm)! I called up SE and she told me to be there around 11AM. I called up my friend Saravana and we both started from home around 9AM in the morning by AC Volvo bus! Traffic was a bit high , so reached Velachery Concorde motors by around 11:30AM. Bought some sweets along the way as a token of appreciation. They said the car is still being cleaned and waxed and it will take some time. Meanwhile all the paper works were over and they handed over all the documents to me. They said accessories for Aria has still not yet arrived but they said they will provide floor mats for Safari worth Rs.1.5k for free , i agreed! Still the car was getting cleaned and i decided to TD Punto90HP just to kill the time! After i reached back the car was still getting waxed and the number plates were being fixed! Meanwhile the SE called me inside and offered me a pouch of chocolates , i also gave them a box sweets which i bought for them. It was almost around 1:30PM and the car was finally ready with garland and ribbon tied!
We finished the photo-session and they handed over the key to me! The SE explained some basic features of the car to me ,which i already knew! I bid good bye to him and when i started my car and moved out all the SE walked out with flags and clapped hands for us and wished us happy motoring with the car! It was truly a royal experience!!
When i drove home all eyes were on the car! Almost 7/10 people on the road turned around and looked the car! Some even asked how is the car , what is the price , mileage etc etc! I don know whether a Fortuner , Captiva or Santa-Fe would have grabbed such attention on road and i am enjoying it! Aria is surely a head-turner on road , even now each time i take it out!
Initial impressions about the car and pictures will follow shortly!
