ISUZU COULD USE HINDUSTAN MOTORS’ PRODUCTION FACILITIES AT CHENNAI TO ASSEMBLE THE D-MAX AND MU-7 RANGE

Japanese utility vehicle maker Isuzu is mulling the use of Hindustan Motors’ Tiruvallur facility to assemble the D-Max range of pick up trucks ad the MU-7 SUV. Currently, Isuzu has test launched the D-Max pick up trucks and the MU-7 SUV in India and these vehicles are sold through two dealerships, one at Hyderabad and the other at Coimbatore. Isuzu will take 3-5 years to set up a full fledged production facility in India. Until then, the Japanese automaker plans to keep the production ticking through the assembly facility of Hindustan Motors at Tiruvallur, off Chennai.

Currently, Hindustan Motors builds only one SUV, the Mitusbishi Pajero Sport, at its Tiruvallur factory. The other SUVs in HM-Mitsubishi range, the Montero and the Outlander, are imported into the country through the completely built unit(CBU) route.

HM-Mitsubishi has stopped producing the Lancer and the Cedia sedans, and the Pajero SFX SUV. Going forward, the Indo-Japanese car making collaboration plans to concentrate on SUVs in the Indian car market. This move from HM-Mitsubishi has meant that the car maker is now saddled with unused capacity at its Tiruvallur factory.

The Tiruvallur factory, which has an annual capacity of 12,000 cars, just uses a third of its capacity given the fact that the Pajero Sport SUV averages about 250 units a month. With an unused capacity of over 8,000 cars, Hindustan Motors can definitely lend its factory to Isuzu. In fact, Hindustan Motors has been looking at lending its production facilities to car makers who need more capacity at minimal investment. Adding to the fact that Isuzu has had a long history with Hindustan Motors(Hindustan Motors sources petrol and diesel engines for many of its vehicles from Isuzu), such an assembly operation is quite likely.

Also, Hindustan Motors’ Indian partner Mitsubishi has a stake in Isuzu, another factor that points to the high possibility of the Isuzu using Hindustan Motors to build the D-Max and MU-7. Although there’s talk about Isuzu using General Motors’ Indian factories for the assembly of the D-Max and MU-7, this is an unlikely route considering the fact that GM India’s facilities are operating at nearly full capacities. For now, the Isuzu using Hindustan Motors’ assembly facility looks more likely.

Isuzu signs agreement with Andhra Pradesh Government to build a manufacturing plant

Isuzu Motors India Pvt. Ltd., today signed an agreement with the state government of Andhra Pradesh to construct a manufacturing facility which would specialize in manufacturing LCV’s (Light Commercial Vehicles).

The proposed factory is situated at Sricity in the southern part of Andhra Pradesh. The location is preferred because of its proximity to Chennai which is an automobile hub with strong infrastructure for import and export.
Isuzu has commenced sales of its MU-7 SUV and the D-Max pickup truck this month in the cities of Hyderabad and Coimbatore. After the test marketing phase in eclipsed, the Japanese automaker will slowly expand its presence starting from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The proposed facility will sit on 4,30,000 square metres of land, however there is no information about the quantum of investments made. Isuzu will continue to import the MU-7 and D-Max pickup truck as CBU’s from Thailand until the Sricity facility is ready to produce vehicles.

It indeed is a very good news, despite trying hard to woo the automobile industry to set up a plant they have always failed to TN on this front, hopefully this will be the new beginning and companies start looking at AP more seriously.

i quite like this car, it is having huge appearence and it can accomodate huge crowd as well as luggage. With massive power of 3L. Engine this car would surely gain attentions. Yes, i doubt about city but in village area, people will get option other than the fortuner. Indian people think big and wants big. So maybe this is there another option, only thing is 'brand' which needs to be recognised.

Briefing reporters about the fair, D Gandhikumar, Chairman, Intec, said Isuzu wanted to establish more vendor facility in the region, for its diesel engine and also Multi Utility Vehicles and would discuss ways and means for supply of almost all components for the company.

Besides, Isuzu, many leading companies from Japan, such as Hitachi and car majors like Hyundai have also shown keen interest in participating in the fair, to have business in the machinery and manufacturing sector, he said.

The 14th edition of the fair would have 508 stalls, with 474 participants, which was expected to do a business of around rs.750 crore, as against rs.560 crore generated during last fair, Gandhikumar said.

As far as Small industries were concerned, Gandhikumar said that due to power crisis the industries have suffered in the last two years, but have not shown any negative growth and with improvement in the power scenario, it was expected to return to normality.

The fair had proved to be a boon the micro and small industries, as major companies were participating in it, by which the sector could get more business in the subsequent years, he said.
