Sir, PPG is also a automotive paint manufacturer and here is their link PPG Asian Paints - About Us

Dupont etc are nearly 30% costlier than PPG hence to reduce over all cost of the project, I stick to PPG. I feel the finishing isn't that great due to a couple of reasons
1. Less painting experience - I am too new to the whole painting thing (mixing ratios, gun handling techniques, spray angle, drying time between 2 coats)
2. The place (no paint booth) and dust in the air.
3. Not using Dupont/ 2K / Bilux etc, PPG is used by Hyundai too, so I guess the rough finishing is may be due to my gun handlling than the actual paint.

@SS80

I agree with you Dupont is costlier and I am aware of PPG also. As per my experience

Dupont and Glasurit are really good and in addition it requires good surface preparation with suitable putty and others. Dust free environment and moisture free air and a good spray gun. Finally expertise on using the gun. Anyway good job buddy

Anand bhai I have been a silent viewer of all your DIYs & must say that you are surely on the right path.
After viewing some posts here regarding the paint finish I just couldn't resist posting this. What you see as rough finish is termed as " ORANGE PEEL EFFECT" Even if you or anybody with a lot of experience uses the best quality paints, he cannot avoid this stage.

To correct this thing & make the paint shine like hell [:)] it has to be wet sanded using a 1500no. emery followed by a 2000no. to level out the paint. After that it has to be rubbed down using any mild liquid rubbing compound such as Motomax 2K or 3M one step. It will require atleast 3-5 passes to bring out the true shine. Post this work, the surface needs to be polished (not waxed) to protect the surface & help the paint to outgass.

In your case, you WILL have to sand the final paint (the last coat of Lacquer) using a 1500no. & rub the panel using a mild rubbing compound to achieve that flawless finish.

PS: Whatever mentioned above is my personal experience, gained from building & painting scale model kits & what not, over the past 7 yrs.

Thanks a lot Gurrala and Samsag.

Samsag:
You have hit the issue spot on, today I sprayed the final lacquer coat and I by mistake sprayed too much before the initial smoke settled. So waited for the lacquer to dry, unfortunately the drops (excess) are so big that I have to use 800 first then 1000 to smooth them out. You are right, we need to use a rubbing compound after smoothening this final layer of Lacquer.

Tomorrow evening is the delivery time, will post pics once I am done with everything.

Thanks again everyone.

The final lacquer which I applied was too rough as I unknowingly reduced thinner content in the final mix, so the Orange peel effect was too much, then started off again with about 6hrs of wet sanding starting with 800, then 1000 and finally 2000. My spray was not that good and ended the whole project in quite a big disappointment.

The final finish was too disappointing, even after hours of sanding and special rubbing compounds. I delivered the bike yesterday.

Varun, please post a pic or two of the bike, preferably daytime ones. Since I delivered the bike late in the evening, I could not take any pics at all.

Here are a few pics of the last lacquer coating done.

After disappointing myself and the dio owner, I dint take up any other major work. However I continued to struggle with laquer, sandpaper and black colour trying to get something that looks really good. Finally I made it. I painted a Pulsar 220 headlamp doom after a nearly 4 attempts, now I got the basics right and the result is as below (actual item looks better than pics).

So slowly I am working towards completing more assignments in the near future.

Hi All,
You can find a few pics of the Dio in the link below. These pics were taken today morning.

https://plus.google.com/photos/1126...s/5697889884167034577?authkey=CMP1-pDq0Ii-ugE

(was unable to upload pics onto the site's server as the max allowed limit for a pic is 1MB? come on. even crap smart phones today capture images which are no less than 1MB)

Not wanting to take any more risks, i got it painted from a local garage who did a mind blowing job of bringing back the dio to an appreciable state from the sad state that it was in, post the first repaint.

I for sure was disappointed (a lot actually) with how the first repaint turned out. This scooter (infact all my vehicles) is something which i would preserve as a treasure for a long time to come. 10 years and the dio still does not break a sweat doing 90kmph. I had maintained it in great shape, cosmetically as well as mechanically, barring a few manufacturing defects, which i anyways could have done nothing about.

A series of scratches on one of the left panels (as a result of a fall) and the faded plastics on the inner side of floor were the only reasons for me to have decided on getting it repainted, which otherwise was in a very good (unbelievable) cosmetic state (factory painted). Just that it was not being used much from the last 1 year.

Anyways. was a learning experience to me as well as a few others whom i know.

Anand: Just a suggestion. Please do not "learn" things at the expense of other's priced possessions. And before you agree on a job, i suggest you be doubly sure if you will really be able to meet the needs of the person. A simple body wash was also not done post the painting. I took out the scooter only 3 or 4 times probably after i parked it in my basement that evening. I felt bad even if i had a glance at the scoot and had almost decided on selling it off. Thanks to a few friends who managed to convince me to keep it.

Hope i have not offended anybody. I have put forward what i felt, with no intention of hurting anybody.

But I, am really hurt.

Thanks

I was literally in tears when i saw the so called repainted Dio earlier. It was clearly a mess and shoddy job. After so many discussions with him i referred him to a known painter and this was the end result.
For a fact this was painted in an open air garage and not a sophisticated dust proof paint booth.

Anyways it is a nice lesson learnt at the cost of something. Now that this is repainted and bought back to its original glory i wish you a happy and safe riding Sriharsha :)
