We intend to do Kanyakumari, and Marthandom visits during this trip on this weekend. Hence, we started of early from Pathanamthitta, and collected my son from hostel. We had breakfast from Uday Surya Restaurant, Parasala, Kerala. This restaurant is having sufficient parking space and bathrooms. It is on left side of the highway on route to Marthandom. I recommend this restaurant for food. Our plan got changed after having yummy breakfast. We could not make Marthandom, and Kanyakumari together. We want to go back to Pathanamthitta, as we have some other appointments. Hence we changed the program to Padmanapuram Palace and cancelled the other two locations. I visited this place during my college days. Anyway, it was a good experience.

Visiting hours: 9am to 5pm (All days except Mondays).

Interestingly, we have to keep our footwares in clock room. Footwares are not allowed inside the palace. Hence we have to move on barefoot. 10Rs for one pair of chapels. Still camera separate charges. The property belongs to Kerala Government. They allocated guides on specific areas. These guides can explain on multiple languages. We decided to spent some time, and listen to those guides and illustrations.

Poomukham –(Entrance)
The place where the King entertained special guests. Built in the indigenous architectural style of Kerala. The entrance-top of this building is shaped as triangle. On the wooden ceiling ninety flowers have been carved. Each of them is marvelous and unique. Following items are available in the poomukham,
• Hanging brass lamp with a knight on horseback,
• A cot built of seven pieces of polished granite,
• A Chinese chair presented to the king by Chinese Merchants,
• An Onavillu presented to the King as tribute by landlords and chieftains of different clans during the onam festival.
The onavillu is the finest examples of the exquisite of Kerala style of paintings.

Manthrasala

The Manthrasala is a hall having considerable importance. Generally, the term Manthrasala refers to place of administration It was at this hall that the King held discussions with his ministers and took discussions with his ministers and took important decisions. The wood carvings on the roof and beams across it proclaim the expertise of the craftsmanship. Manthrasala has only one projection and eleven
number of Kilivathil. A Kilivathil is a tiny window, the shutters of which are beautifully decorated with mirror work in different hues. Chinese model sittings that adorn the Manthrasala are rich with wonderful carvings. The floor of the Manthrasala is typical of the rare technology that was in vogue.

Dining Hall
Dining Hall (Oottupura), The kings of Travancore were known for their generous hospitality. Over 2000 people were served free meals in this grand dining hall on a daily basis. Each story of this two storied building is built to accommodate one thousand people at a time. The huge Chinese jars which were used to store pickles for the feast are exhibited in the ground floor.

Some more photos are attaching. Nice weather, not crowded even though a weekend, the visit was a visual treat. Check these roof tiles. They are still surviving without any paint/repaint. They are of top quality. I put roof tiles on my house roof. It need frequent repaints on fixed interval to avoid algae due to monsoon. It shows the quality of the materials used in the construction of this palace. You can find this person (me) with family in one of the photo.

Kitchen comes after the food court. Big Chinese jars can be found on the entrance to the Kitchen. Miniature water tanks used for soaking, and washing raw rice are displayed. Multiple Stone Grinding Apparatus can be found on the way. Aatu Kallu (Grinding Apparatus) can be found near one of the water tank. These are of big size. How they managed such big Aatu Kallu?
