Re: Powered By M-Hawk: Mahindra Scorpio SLE. 4 years and 60000+ km

Just back from a 300km road trip. Was driving at around 75-80 km/hour speed most of the time and an amazing FE of 14km/L returned [tankful to tankful method]. The vehicle has been rock solid, smooth and silent, such a level of refinement was felt only when the vehicle was rolled out of the showroom in July, 2009.
A great job done at ITL,Motors/Trissur during the last service and their attention to details towards perfection is commendable indeed.[clap]
Shall update on the consistency of FE in few days time.

Did a Munnar/Rajakkad trip today. The roads beyond Neriyamangalm is in very bad state and worst until Ellakkal. Filled the tank at Adimali. Drove mostly in the vicinity of 80km/Hr and this time the FE of 13.66 km/L returned with 100% AC all the time. Once again excellent figures considering the pathetic roads and Hill range.

Manoj Hawk is just gleaming and in top notch condition.
Wish you many more happy miles.
Thanks Mukesh.

Planning a Velankanni trip tomorrow. Planning an early morning start and hope the Bodimettu -Theni stretch is fine as the stretch was not open to traffic, few months ago due to the road widening work.

Hi manoj, your hawk is definitely looking as good as new. Big thumbs up for maintaining your car so well. Also good to see you enjoying your car. I guess yours and mukesh's scorpio are among the best maintained cars I have seen on this forum. Keep p the good work buddy.

Update: Completed 70,000 km
DSC_0479.JPG

Have gone past the 70,000 km mark and is in the 5th year of exhilarating ownership [:)] The journey has been very eventful and am enjoying every bit of owning this beast in black. Did a Rajakkad- Velankanni -Rajakkad trip [ around 900km] in one day, a couple of days back. This time I had the luxury to push the Hawk to 120km/Hr most of the time and the FE returned was 12.88 km/L with AC on always.
No issues and No rattles whatsoever. Amazing NVH levels even while cruising at 120-125 km/Hr, except for the minimal noise from Yokos [:D]

Did some serious DIY today. Shall update with plenty of pictures soon.

  • Now the ODO reading stands very close to 72000 km.
  • Except for a punture, I am glad to say that there hasn't been any single issue be it a simple squeak or a rattle.[thumbsup]
  • Max FE returned: 14.00 km/L
  • Min FE returned : 11.80 km/L
The last trip via Udumalpettu was fun and at multiple times I got a bit adventurous with loads of fun and went off the narrow roads/tarmac in order to overtake a vehicle or let another from opposite to cross without having to slow down.

In my absence, the Hawk wouldn't have much work to do for another 4 months or so. Looking forward to some serious and funfilled road trips during monsoons. In between, if anything comes up shall update here.[embarass]

Manoj, where did you get those rear drums painted.

How much did it cost.

I am thinking to get them painted with red color.

Have you tried any other engine oils, apart from Maximile?

Any idea on Shell Helix HX5 - 15W40.

It was a DIY job lasted in about 2 hours with a small bottle [minimum most available] of metallic golden paint and a few paint brushes. The cost was around Rs.100, I guess.[:)]

You can also do it at your local garage with the wheels removed and paint [3M prefered] sprayed on the drums, for better durability and finish.

BTW, red should look great on your silver.

Never used any other oil as it was always done at A.S.Ss, where I beleive Maximile is the only choice by default. Mahindra reccomends the use of Mahindra Maximile Premium Engine Oil only.

Never thought of any alternatives like Shell Helix HX5 - 15W40.Though there hasn't been any glitch from engine so far, should an alternative be considered, be it shell HX5 or any synthetic oil?

Though my Scorpio is out of warranty period, I prefer to continue getting the services done at A.S.S only. Is there any synthetic oil option at A.S.S ?

Re: Powered By M-Hawk: Mahindra Scorpio SLE. 4.5 Years and 70,000+ Kms

How can your Scorpio look that good after 72000km and more than 4 years??? [surprise]

No swirl marks, paint still shining like new, even the engine bay is amazing.

Hats off to you.

Need some maintenance tips. I would also like to keep my Optimus in the same trim of shine even after 4 years.

Thanks.

  • I don’t believe in the idea of waxing a new car every week end. I did my first polishing in the 4th Year of ownership and then started waxing as and when necessary.
  • Wax attracts dust and the latter, is the major culprit for swirl marks. Frequent washing with a some quality car wash will remove surface contaminants and help maintain the shine.
  • During Monsoons, my car gets a clean bath after every single time it does a trip. I too don’t like to travel dirty.
  • I always use a Car Shampoo, a low pressure jet and some microfiber cloths.
  • Never leave water droplets to dry on its own, be it after a wash or some rain. Always use clean and dust free microfiber cloth here. After a rainy trip, wash it and then dry it.
  • During dry seasons, I don’t perform detailed washing very often. Never wipe off the dust with wet cloths or drag anything on the surface to get the dust off.
  • Never wash in Sun and avoid or reduce continuous exposure to heat other than while it is being driven.
  • My car has a dedicated garage, that protects it from dust, rain and Sun.
  • I do clean the engine bay on a regular basis as well.
  • How much ever you try, swirl marks can’t be avoided on dark shades. If they start making the surface too dull, get a detailed polishing at a reputed centre.

Polishing, according to me is something that should be avoided as you are tampering with the original paint. I would prefer regular and detailed washing and preventing swirl marks and scratches from occurring than going in for polishing and waxing after they have appeared.

P.S: I don’t buy cars every two years. Owning an car for a long time and maintaining it well is a source of pride, I believe.
