Re: Petrol or Diesel???

Sorry to say this but still world is dependent on diesel for major transportation. I think diesel is costing nearly same as petrol in most of developed countries, but still they use diesel trucks and other diesel powered machines for their respective purpose, that is because diesel engines has more power than petrol engines and more efficient as well. If diesel would not have had an edge over petrol ones then it could have vanished like coal did in the past. Cng is still not that much conventional like diesel is, though it provides cheapness of diesel and peppiness of petrol.
Buddy, heavy haulers are powered by diesel because diesel engines have a good low end torque, but not the power for sure.
Petrol engine can also haul the loads but since the top torque is produced at higher rpm, hence petrol engine at the end will bog down before reaching that rev range where peak torque is available.
In terms of cars, diesel has just one advantage, that also in India. The advantage is 'Running costs',none else.

It surely would not make any difference in india too, if it would become rs80/lt. Still, huge torque and power lovers will buy the diesel vehicles. And one more thing above mentioned example shows only the need of diesel in real world. Imagine if petrol gets vanished, there would be no major changes, rather it will make every auto manufacturer to innovate new things to make diesel engines even better. But if somehow diesel would.......... You can imagine what would happen until some other fuel like diesel gets invented.
My dear,a Gypsy is a petrol car but can beat a lot of diesels off the road.Hence we can say that petrols are nowhere behind the diesels in anything, but diesels are still way behind when it comes to driving pleasure or fun-to-drive factor.
And if petrol or diesel gets vanished, then we will drive electric vehicles and yes, electric engines have even better torque than the diesels I guess.

Oh so your talking about the transportation, in early 60's the transport system was mainly dependent on the Trains which was powered by Steam ( coal ) to do major transport and then trucks ( diesel ) came in practice.

So I agree to one extent as transportation mode, but hang on , Aeroplanes connect different countries together that runs on jet fuel which is 100 octane petrol isn't it ?

Don't make so biased statements. Accept the truth which is bitter .
Fuels will run out one day , and that day comes soon enough.
When you say power lover / torque lover I expect alot , mind to share your dyno reports mate ? [roll]

I have shifted from a Santro to Fiesta TDCi. I must admit that I still miss the smoothness and linear power delivery of Petrol Engine. In city start-stop, I really miss it.

But I love diesel when I tank up each time :)

You missed one more advantage - driving pleasure for some.

My dear,a Gypsy is a petrol car but can beat a lot of diesels off the road.Hence we can say that petrols are nowhere behind the diesels in anything, but diesels are still way behind when it comes to driving pleasure or fun-to-drive factor.
Ask any hardcore off roader and he will say that, though the Gypsy is much more mechanically reliable than a Mahindra Jeep, it badly needs a diesel engine. In off roading situations, the low end torque of a diesel is a necessity, not a boon.

Compare the 0-100 kmph of diesel engines of BMWs and Audis. They are similar to their petrol counterparts.

You cannot claim diesels are not fun to drive. The definition of "fun to drive" varies and I find a diesel much more exciting than a petrol!!!

In this long debate on petrol Vs diesel, each one have their on valid points to support the fuel type they like, but if we are sincere enough to answer our self, then the reason for more diesel vehicles being sold in in India in the recent scenario is due to the difference between the petrol and diesel cost.

But again, the pity in these decisions is the monthly running ignored by many and blindly going for diesel and not looking at the extra cost they are paying and also not looking at the little higher maintenance involved in long run say for 5 years are so.

In my case, it was only the fuel cost made me to take the decision of diesel, because of my monthly running was high. I am happy with my decision, but unfortunately this is not with the case with many who are buying diesel cars today just not worth when they look at their monthly running against the extra cost they are paying where they could happily settled for a good petrol car !!

I am sure with the kind of situation in the country now on the fuel prices difference more people are tend to buy diesel cars how much ever you try and explain them !!

@ RAJ , good points but again why would you buy a Diesel BMW / Audi . If one can afford a BMW / Audi they can afford fuel as well isn't it [lol]

@Gurrala- This is the reason why petrol cars are being depreciating in india alot compared to diesel ones.Because people are not really thinking of various aspects when buying a car

As I have mentioned, I am a diesel fan. I drive diesels because I love driving diesels. Not because of the fuel efficiency or price of the fuel. Yes, the price and FE is the icing on the cake. And I believe, there MAY be many more like me...

And for that matter, even if someone buys a BMW, why should he not buy a diesel. If he is saving on some money, isnt it good? He can buy a bigger car later with those savings!

As far as I am concerned, all my cars (whether Maruti or Audi) will be diesel. I cannot switch back to petrol now.

Totally agree with raj here.
These are two different technologies, on same platform, serving the same purpose. There are some people who really appreciate the technology working under the hood, not just following a herd. Be it petrol or diesel (I am talking about diesel here).
And there are people who have driven petrol engine earlier and have switched to diesel now, or people who have always driven diesel. And these are hooked to the power and torque of diesel (Diesel provides right thing at right time).
These people will always go for a diesel engine.
And I too, being a diesel fan, wont be able to go back to petrol again. Pulling power is addictive.
Though, its true, most of us opt for diesel for lower cost, and I find nothing wrong in that.

I am not talking about 60's transport instead i am talking about today's goods transport and all that kind of transportation. Even today these kind of transportation is dependent on diesel. BTW that was just an example.

So I agree to one extent as transportation mode, but hang on , Aeroplanes connect different countries together that runs on jet fuel which is 100 octane petrol isn't it ?
I agree buddy, but that is a different league of fuel. You can't compare jet fuel with normal petrol or diesel. Though it is petrol but likewise even diesel, petrol, LPG, Jet fuel all are petroleum products, then what is this debate for.

Don't make so biased statements. Accept the truth which is bitter .

Well I am trying to keep myself unbiased. But this is not truth that petrol is superior cause only passenger cars are the sole users of petrol engines (most of the cases) otherwise most other kind of automobiles are dependent on diesel engines.

I agree that petrol engines provide that thrill in cars as if we can make it a sports car but engines are related to much more than just cars.

In car segment also. We can achieve that sports car kind of feeling in a diesel car by doing some mods. But we all know that companies in india are not trying to provide that thrill in diesel cars.
But as mentioned by Raj about BMW, proves that it is easily possible. But not happening because automobile companies don't want.

We diesel lovers love the availability of that torque and power at lower rpm, without straining the engine.

No offenses.

i was a die hard petrolhead like no diesel at all. but nowadays diesel makes sense to me. the low end torque is amazing and similar amounts of fun can be extracted if not more. still a V6 petrol will find a better place in my heart than a V6 diesel.

Honest reply.No doubt.

+100..

At least it will be better than an un-reliable diesel.

Compare the 0-100 kmph of diesel engines of BMWs and Audis. They are similar to their petrol counterparts.
I believe in power delivery and that's better and long lasting for petrol engines throughout the rev range. And hence overall the petrols are faster.

You cannot claim diesels are not fun to drive. The definition of "fun to drive" varies and I find a diesel much more exciting than a petrol!!!
Again +100,but diesels are not at all fun to drive for me.(Leave Audi 3.0 TDI A4 here, its an exception).

Haha,+1 to complete post..
It looks like Codename is serious now and may even punch someone on speaking against petrol engines.

Eh,I drive with one hand n wheel and on eon gear lever most of the time and hence I find nothing wrong in shifting.I just love shifting two gears down and scissor past the traffic in seconds.
Can you do this with your diesel car?To an extent, but not like the petrol one.

Can you please elaborate on that. What makes a diesel unreliable?

I have become a calm driver now. I generally dont need to do that. And whenever I have needed it, my diesel has never let me down.

I have driven petrol car for Lac km I never faced this problem in allmost all northern part no idea about southern.
Issue is in Western. [;)]
And one of the biggest advantage of diesel is that when you go to fuel station, it brings a smile on your face....45/L !!
