Re: Restoration of Maruti 800 1991 (Tonnes of Pics Uploaded)

Varun:
Thanks for uploading pictures.

Vaibhav:
Thanks a lot, I will surely check it before the engine is mounted back into the car.

Yesterday i went to the garage and was happy to see the engine assembled and probably by tomorrow I will be collecting my car back.

I am planning to get the Type 2 dashboard installed in my car so I have asked the mechanic not to fit the dashboard as I have to clean the blower, apply underbody coating to all interiors and door/cabin light wiring etc.

Thanks again for the picture Varun.

Mustang:
I had that plan, but now finances are too limited to try that. Also still document transfer and brake booster are pending.

hey mr ss80 do change those rubber parts in between the crossmember and engine mounting as they are cheap also and also reduces the vibration to a very large extend...as this time i wold be easy to replace them[:)]

Thanks Vaibhav. I will check that for sure.

My car is ready to be taken out of garage and today the car engine was turned on and left on for about 5hours and continuously monitored every now and then by the mechanic to ensure that everything is alright. Tomorrow evening I am likely to collect the car, really missed it for nearly 2 months!

Hey Anand, very very happy to see your car getting ready. I know how it will be to drive it after a gap of 2 months. The engine bay looks clean and neat.

Re: Restoration of Maruti 800 1991 (Tonnes of Pics Uploaded)

A sad update [cry]

I am in the heights of joblessness and my car too isn't doing well.

Here are the list of issues I have with the car now.

1. Zero Idling - due to carb issues. The carburator I have is at the end of its life cycle and no further repairs can be done on it. The mechanic informed me about this long back, I could not arrange for a new one. The used one I had, has also been abused by its previous owner.

2. Cant start the car only if its in Neutral - Have to check clutch cable

3. Interiors are total scrap - most plastics need replacement, roof cloth is hanging, seats are kind of flat already.

4. No Cabin lamp

5. Jerks and switching off - Fuel pump issue, needs replacement

6. Ignition coil gets heated up and car switches off quite often. Need to replace this as well.

What's good about the car?
Punchy engine - Money spent on engine rebuild is worth every rupee. Completely satifisfied with the acceleration.
Gear issues sorted out - the replacement gearbox seems to be doing a good job.
New Battery and almost new dynamo are also perfectly fine

I cant get the document transfer done without the interiors and brake booster fit. I doubt if I could do all this in the next few months. The car is likely to get into hibernation mode for a looong time from tomorrow.

The carb issue is very big and its price is also equally big. I had fuelled the car for 5litres and the mileage was too good, the car switched off within 10kms from the garage then again I topped up petrol for about 300/- then drove till M.G.Road when it began to jerk sligthly, again I topped up for another 300/- reached home and parked the car. I am totally frustrated.

I will clean the interiors, apply underbody coat, fix dashboard and existing seats, wheel caps etc. Once I do all these, I will disconnect the battery (may be even sell it, since its brand new) and not touch the car till I can pump some 10K atleast into it.

Sometimes I regret entering this restoration line, for the fact that my car is never drive ready at all! Some of my neighbours are least concerned about their rides and still they have hardly any issues, my neighbour has a 96 model, 2nd owner m800 and still he is happy, has not spent a penny so far. When I hunt for cars, I dont get good ones, whatever I get is fully loaded with problems to the brim! Like some insurance schemes, my car is filled with problems - BUMPER TO BUMPER[lol]

I am not ready to fix anything as of now, quite disappointed with a lot of things, especially a few comments about my work and my car which I get to hear from a lot of people off late.

I also just asked myself, why not just buy a new Nano and do no DIY at all? Put fuel, keep using the car. Then I wont be happy as there is nothing really to do in a new car.

Will post pics of rubber coating in floor and will pause the thread for sometime.

Re: Restoration of Maruti 800 1991 (Tonnes of Pics Uploaded)

I guess you are worrying so much. The cost would be much lesser !

The carb can be picked up form junk (a good one) for 1k max.

The ignition coil will cost 300 rs for carb 800. I have already purchased the floor mats & interior body panels (2 sets)..

Fix the type (new) steering wheel which you have, it would look good.

Get a booster, make the car run atleast once in a week !

Dont sell the battery, you will not get half price of it.

At present just fit back all the stuff on the car, dash, wiring, seats. Make the car look in one piece. Especially clean the car as there is 2 months dust accumulated on it.

Making the car hibernate again would welcome new issues ! I guess you got what I am talking about..

Anand Bhai, Do not worry and do NOT get disappointed by any comments on your work or your car. As we all TAIians know that your work is the best.

And the reason why you didn't buy a new NANO and just drive it stock is because you are ANAND, the Great Restorer. Who will one day surely succeed and fulfill his dreams. [thumbsup]

Hey Anand! Appreciate your interest in restoration. I too am fascinated by restoration projects.Somehow I find more pleasure in riding a restored old model vehicles rather than new vehicles. I am not restoring a 2002 model Pulsar and have already restored few motorcycles. Cars...I managed to restore a Hyundai Accent 2000 model.

I can see the state of mind you should be in right now. You are not at fault. A vehicle for restoration should have atleast one plus in it. Say a good engine, or good interior or even good electricals. Sadly in your car it seems like either luck did not favor you or you bold enough in getting your hands on it.

Sincere *advice* or suggestion to you - Please do not stop or pause the work. It will bring in more troubles. Make a list of most **needed** materials and get down to your local junk yard. Once you source the parts, you can recondition it. Plastic parts look good when they are washed and polished with sprays. Looks brand new as well. Get a Bosny underbody spray can and spray it completely in the floor. The can costs about 250/-. This will act as dampner for road noise as well. Put the car back in order and drive it around until you save money and time for it. I would suggest you to do this in one shot even by taking off sooner or later. But do not let the car sit idle again.

Good job so far mate on your passion for restoration.
All the best!

.........surely succeed and fulfill his dreams. [thumbsup]
Thanks a lot Shantanu. We are on the same boat [:)]

Hey Anan.............so far mate on your passion for restoration.
All the best!
Thanks Petrolhead. Yeah I am planning to do some underbody coat for the floor too.

I guess you are worrying s...............ng about..
Yeah I am too scared that my car should not look like one of those several M800's parked outside and buried half in sand. In my area alone there are about 7 M800's chewed away by rust and sand. Hopefully I should be in a position to use it atleast once a week.

Thanks for the update on parts prices. Today I did visit the junkyard and saw a few carburators. Most of them were too bad in shape so came back. Tomorrow I will visit again and check for some fresh stock which is likely to come by.

Today I removed everything from the car, broomed it inside, washed it with Lizol disinfectant water, then soap water, then plain water. To get rid of all smells and dirt from the squirrels and rats. Later once dried applied Zinc Oxide primer to all welded areas.

Tomorrow morning I will apply the rubber coating for entire inner floor and then will fix seats and blower, dashboard etc.

Good going !! You have treated them well. How about the same treatment for the inner door panels, underbody, wheel arches ?

I feel this is not so thick as 3m as I have on my 800.

So when are you going to fit back all the electricals, dash items etc ?

Re: Restoration of Maruti 800 1991 (Tonnes of Pics Uploaded)

Thanks Varun.

I have done the same to the inner door panels too. However the damage is already done by these long years. The inner door panels are rusted to a certain extent and not much can be done about it. It's thick, but not as thick as 3M underseal. The 3M also looks better (geryish colour). I have to fix back everything probably by tomorrow. I am yet to fix the cabin lamp issue as well as the wiper tank and pipes.

I will do the underbody areas too within a week.
