Day 8 : Shimla

1st February 2013, we started at 10 am to Kufri, one of the main tourist spots in Shimla. On the way we stopped at a couple of places to take pics. We parked the car and again have to go by horses to Kufri Top. The place was fully covered with snow. We had to leave our regular shoes and wear the snow shoes before going there. The ride to the top will take about half an hour through a slushy path. Reaching there, it’s an awesome view of snow covered hills and valleys. On the top there is a temple, snow games, skating, food joints etc above all an enchanting view of Himalayas. We spent almost two hours there, called up the horse guy and he reached in 20 minutes and we went down. It was really a pleasant experience.

We thought we will spend some time for shopping at Mall Road, in Shimla. As you know parking is a big problem in Shimla, almost 80% of the vehicles are parked on the road side. Somehow I managed to get a place at parking area. From there the Mall Road is about 100 feet above the hill. There are Public Lifts available to go to the top, operated by Himachal Tourism with a nominal charge.

Mall Road is maintained very well and clean. No vehicles are allowed there. We did some shopping, had dinner there itself came back to the hotel around 10 pm. We had one more day to spend in Shimla.

More to continue.

Continuation will be done only after four days as I have to continue my journey from Bangalore.

Re: Day 6 : Jaipur to Shimla – 625 Kms

30th January 2013, we started from Jaipur at 6.50 am and the route taken is Delhi-Panipet-Ambala-Chandigargh-Shimla. We stopped at a restaurant at 8.30 am and had the breakfast (Idly-Sambar after so many days). At 11 am we entered Delhi City and the traffic was heavy too. Thanks to MMI for guiding us perfectly to Chandigargh Road through Delhi city. Within an hour we left Delhi city, and on the outskirts we filled up the fuel tank, as the fuel price in Delhi is less, but later found Himachal is even cheaper. On the way to Panipet we stopped at a Dhaba for lunch. On the way we could see cops were stopping the vehicles for over speed and fining them. After lunch we continued at 2.30 pm, after an hour we were stopped by the cops and demanded original documents, seeing them all perfect they raised the issue of sun control film though it was very light, advised us to down all the window glasses while driving and remove the film as early as possible. We continued and crossed CH around 4 pm and entered Shimla Ghats around 4.30 pm. Interestingly all the way the road was very good. We stopped at a couple of places for photography and tea, and by then it became dark. Before entering Shimla, an entry fee of Rs 200/- (to be shown on demand anywhere in Shimla) to be paid. As we were entering Shimla we could see snow on both sides of the road, and later we were told there was a heavy snow fall before three days.

Around 8 pm on the ghats I was negotiating a sharp curve with a speed of 60 kms and at a distance of 15 feet I saw a black cow right on the middle of the road, Oh God!!! I took a sharp cutting and had a miraculous escape. "Nothing can be predicted with animals".

We booked our accommodation for four nights at a hotel in Mushabra, 12 kms away from Shimla. We reached there at 8.40 pm and immediately after a wash went to the restaurant for dinner. We came back to the room at retired for the day.

More to follow

Hats off to you Ram sir!!! I truly salute to your spirit at this age. Your wife should be equally appreciated...

It was nice/crisp narration followed by wonderful pics. BTW, is your car automatic or manual gear?

Eagerly waiting for some more pics and rest of the trip details.

I too rated 5* [clap]

Rare Travelogue from a Senior enthusiast. Even at 28, i have never drove more than 700 kms in a single trip. But your drive inspires to go further in the near future. Lovely pictures and lovely Octavia Sir..

Ram sir

True to your name sir, you have achieved a Great Feat and that too at this age and stage of your life.. [clap]

It really puts us all (so called) Young Auto Enthusiasts to Shame..

We only REV here on the forum whereas you and your car are Revving and Roaring on the Ground / Roads.. Good one..Fantastic

And the PICS just complete the story which is already so beautiful..

By the way, 2 points from my side:

1) Your wife deserves as much accloades as you and your excellent car. Hats off to both the Females on the Trip (Your better half & your Better car)

2) Also im surprised that we do not see any snap / pic / photo of both of you husband and wife...Why??

Atleast let this Great Forum view the maverick couple who dared to undertake this Trip.. [clap]

Cannot rate more than 5 STARs, so did..
