Well guys, leave the diesel and coming to petrol.
As per the latest data of a drive of we guys, its the Honda City which can deliver the FE even better than an Alto in the real world driving.
How I came to this hard-to-digest conclusion?
We people made a recent trip to a place about 60 kms away from my place and the cars were a Honda City and an Alto LXi(the one I was using as a replacement for Corolla). Both the cars were driven sedately at about 100 kph on the highway. At the end of the trip when we calculated the FE then we found out that the Alto delivered about 18.6 kpl while the City delivered about 19 kpl on the same road and same speed.
In other words, these hatches give good FE only till you drive them at the speeds of 60-70 but city gives good FE even if you drive it at 100 kph and with varying speeds.
So this way City is more fuel efficient than most of the hatches too.

Why Nissan micra diesel is not included in this list.. ? Though company claimed mileage is 23.06 kmpl it easily gives more than 23 in City & more than 26-27 on highways (60-100 speed range)

I dont know guys what you are talking I am thinking selling my punto and buy a Nano.guy in my neighbourhood is getting highest 34kmpl and least 29kmpl.
I am sure he is not lying as the only reason he still drives it is due to astonishing mileage otherwise twice he had booked wagenR and i10 but backed off.

@sam that picture dint tell full story .My fiat shows 50kmpl in neutral.:-)

@jayadev: Ha Ha. No, that's not in neutral. That's my trusty Logan doing a steady 55kmph in 5th gear on a slope with slight tailwind.

On my regular highway commute, it has been giving me 25 kmpl @80 kmph measured on a tankfull to tankfull basis (approx 1300 kms) for the last 70000 kms.

But I still like your Punto[;)]!

+1 to that. All modern diesel engines upto 1500cc are capable of giving in exccess of 20kmpl if driven sedately on the highway.

It seems people are mistaken with what fe is and getting overconfident with what mid shows.
FE should be average consumption of a distance travelled from start to stop.
we should be more realistic right?

For Rs500 diesal filled, my Punto does exactly 200kms without AC.by 201km it will run dry and turn off this I have checked twice via route Kannur to Kochin the route is mix of Ghats and city.

@jayadev: Off topic but seriously, do you mean that you let your Punto run dry twice? Did you face any problem in restarting it thereafter? To the best of my knowledge, a fuel injected vehicle should never be allowed to run dry (fuel in the tank maintains the necessay pressure required for the fuel pump to oprate).

Even if it has worked fine for you in the past, I would exhort you not to try it again.

Both the time it got dried unintentionally.I was determined to know the exact FE so I did carry 5 litres of fuel in the bottle.
First time I was happy to see it did 200 km but I was doubtful of reserve fuel . So I tried again and it did exact 200 and went off. Which proved the repeatability too.
I do realize its not good but it seems mjd cuts off the fuel electronically beyond certain limit to avoid air bubbles. So did the car started at first attempt after refuelling 3 litres
while it assured me there is no other better way to confirm ultra accurate method to know the FE of your beloved car.
Full tank short distance method behaves wierd as moment you move the car the fuel drains again to some where.
Tankfull to tank full method is too much time consuming and expensive where you are bound to get errors in idling time.
my brother tried similar with avenger and it did 45km for a litre petrol under soft riding and 38km a litre for normal riding.
