@bigdaddy,
I completely understand your situation. The third day after i got the car, i took it out for 20KM, when i was about to reach my house (i was @ 20KM/hr), a vegetable cart came on road and hit on my car front portion. I really got panic (first time i was driving in India) and i went and stopped little far from the spot.
Everyone came and shouted at me for damaging his cart. They could see the damage to my car as well. Coolant was leaking. front bumper and bonnet was bend. Imagine - a vehicle which is not done even 50KM. Actually, that guy unknowingly took his hand off from cart , and it came directly to road. They could easily identify from my kannada (local language) that I belong to either mangalore or other state. So, they got an upper hand. Luckily, a neighbor (local) came and helped me in that situation. They were asking 20K for not my mistake. Neighbor shouted at them and said not a single rupee and asked him to pay damage to my car. I said 'i do not need any money' and will give the repair cost of the cart. Finally gave 3000Rs from my pocket.
I claimed the insurance. Paid 1200rs or something out of 25K damage. I did not even feel to drive in bangalore road later. Morons everywhere. Later started driving again on weekends.
Later, on the way to a journey, we got hit on our rear right side by a tempo with their front bumper near Hebbal - Tumkur intersection . Again, that was not our mistake. We were going parallel, and he suddenly came left to avoid a pothole. Luckily police was there. After an hour, the owner of the lorry came and said 'will give the repair charges'. Many told us to take something. I believed the owner of the lorry. Later i got a quote from Maruti service center around 20K. I opted for insurance again. Paid around 1300Rs. Asked that money with owner. He straightaway said 'No. go and give the case'.
It was not our mistake. Accidents do happen. Avoid as much as you can. If others are in a hurry, let them go. (The same tempo was honking me on previous signal when it was red).
Now also, I take it out only on weekend (sunday) if i am going anywhere. Or for long drives 100 to 1000. For local journey , i go in my two wheeler. If i am not going on weekends, i just start it for few minutes and turn it off.
Do not get disheartened. Do not worry. You are not only the one facing the problem in Indian roads.
Take care. Drive Safe
