Re: Mahindra Reva NXR Caught Testing (Launch By End-2012)

Mahindra has now inaugurated the exclusive manufacturing facility for Reva in Bangalore. On this occasion, Mr.Anand Mahindra said:

“We firmly believe that the automobile industry is at an inflection point that will re-shape the way we own and use mobility solutions. This change is being driven by rapidly changing customer needs and dramatic advancements in automotive technologies, including the growing influence of electronics and IT in automobile products and solutions.”

Elaborating on the Group’s intent to create a movement that will encourage all stakeholders to co-imagine and co-create a shared vision of the future, Mr. Mahindra further added, “We have tried to capture the critical elements where maximum change will be seen, using a framework of 5 C’s. The 5C’s, when seen together, define the ‘future of mobility’. It is important to understand that the 5 C’s don’t just apply to cars but rather to the entire automotive value chain and the ecosystem.”
The 5 C’s Framework:

> The first ‘C’ is Clean, which will involve a radical re-think on how we manufacture, use and recycle automobiles so that the entire chain is as green as possible

> Customers are demanding Convenience in all aspects of acquiring and operating mobility products. From experiencing the car virtually, to flexible ownership models, to having cars diagnosed remotely and serviced at home, convenience will become a key differentiator

> Dramatic improvements in telematics and related technologies are making Connected vehicles a reality. We will soon see cars connecting to their owners, connecting to other cars, ultimately car owners connecting to other owners through their cars and cars connecting to the grid.

> Rapid integration of electronics and IT with automobiles is making vehicles Clever. Embedded intelligence will make cars of the future intelligent enough to interact with traffic systems, carry out self-diagnosis and perhaps, even drive themselves without a human interface!

> Lastly, the challenge is to translate the benefits of these innovations into Cost-effective products and solutions to make owning/using these products affordable to the masses. This is what will drive progress and development

Mahindra Reva also unveiled a host of technologies, all of them directly inspired by the vision of the future of mobility. The technologies showcased include ‘Quick2Charge’, by which the car can be charged in 15 minutes to run 25 kms, thereby providing customers with increased convenience. In order to tap and use the abundant solar energy for mobility, Mahindra Reva has designed a personal charging unit called ‘Sun2Car’ which will provide free and clean energy for the lifetime of the car, making it a very cost-effective solution. The technology, ‘Car 2 Home’ makes it possible to use energy from the car to power a house.

Mahindra Reva !
The price is going to be the main factor that is going to decide the future of this modern product. If the manufacturer is trying to transfer the burden of the investment cost they have incured in setting up the modern plant, they are not going to succed and Reva would have the same fate as its present generation.

I guess, if it is priced well then it will serve the purpose of 2nd car in family for two reasons:
1: Less parking space
2: Low running cost and can be used for office commute.

We are planning for Reva as 2nd Car and will be driven by wife for office commute: easy to drive, safer than 2wheelar, no fuel expenses etc etc.

If not Reva then we will go for upcoming Nano Diesel or Maruti800 Diesel.

Re: New Mahindra Reva NXR Launches in September 2012

Reva NXR may be priced 20% higher than hatchbacks

MahindraReva, the electric car arm of India's largest utility vehicle company Mahindra & Mahindra, is aiming to price its electric car RevaNXR at a 20% premium of the conventionally-run petrol hatchbacks in India .

"For the success of electric cars, affordability is the key. And we have learnt that the customer may not be able to pay more than 15-20% premium on electric cars. Our endeavour is to offer our products within that range. The extension of subsidy through new electric vehicle policy will be the key," said Pawan Goenka, president-automotive, Mahindra & Mahindra. If M&M is able to price the Reva NXR - a 4-seater electric car - at a 20% premium, then it may be priced closer to diesel-run Maruti Suzuki's Swift and Hyundai's i20.

The car is likely to have a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour, but is smaller than premium hatchbacks like Swift and i20. A couple of weeks ago, the heavy industries ministry came out with a National Mission for Electric & Hybrid Mobility, where the government is planning to offer a support of Rs 23,000 crore over eight years.

ET has learnt that the government may extend over Rs 1 lakh as subsidy to bring down the price of passenger cars to make them more affordable to the common man. The heavy industries ministry estimates that 6-7 million electric vehicles are plying on Indian roads, which are largely made up of 2-wheelers and buses.

But the electric passenger car market could be over 6-7 lakh units by then.

According to Goenka, while the initial cost may be high, the cost of running an electric vehicle is just 50-60 paise per kilometer as against 3-4 per kilometer on diesel and 5-6 per kilometer on petrol.

"Once the mission plan is implemented, everyone will get into the electric vehicle space, which will help in development of charging infrastructure as well. If we get a good response for NXR, we may come out with three to four more products," said Goenka.

Mahindra Reva is looking to sell 30,000 units in the next three years, including 15,000 units for exports. Educating customers about the benefit of owning an electric vehicle will be the key, added Goenka.

M&M has tied up with State Bank of India, power distribution companies like BSES and different malls across leading cities for charging stations and it's also in talks with various states to create such facilities across the country. Mahindra Reva has 100 charging stations across Delhi and Bangalore, and is aiming to add 300-500 in the next few years.

The company is also planning to lease the car battery to lower cost.

Re: New Mahindra Reva NXR Launches in September 2012

Not criticizing M&M, but these people don't seem to get it. Pricing in 20% higher than petrol and closer to Diesel will make the proposition totally unattractive. Understand that running cost is very less, but the battery pack (lithium or otherwise) would have a battery life of 3/4 years at max. Optimum life would be 2 years as after that even on full charge probably you would only get 60% of the range.
Considering that you have to reinvest in the battery every 3 years and which will probably cost a lot; suddenly it does not seem a very value driven proposition. If you add the cost of the battery, I am sure on a 3 year period the running cost would be very similar to diesel.
Given that and if they price it closer to diesel, I will pick a diesel hatch any day. At least I will have a car to sell after 3 years, would not have the limitation of range whereas Reva would be just a shell with a electric motor.

Only hope that M&M has thought hard on the battery issue and has some replacement scheme at the end of 3 years or better still gives the battery on lease where you get a new battery when you renew the lease again.

The way I see it - this is the only way forward with the depleting oil resources. There is still some time for coal to become fully scarce, but till then electricity will be good alternative.

However, govt is not doing enough to reduce the taxes on such vehicles - this is very important as quoted in the above post, the cars need to be affordable and maintanable. The least that can be done is to remove the taxes and give the relief to be passed on to consumers.
