I don't think sharing platform is that a crime, one of the best thing for me about Jeep Compass & Renegade is that it's based on a platform from FCA,and engineering done focussing the Fiat. I don't think Indian market is that matured for accepting true blue Jeeps like wrangler even if it's locally produced, the brand appeals much towards those who prefer that kind of involving lifestyle than the boring reliability of a Japanese, like we Indians prefer. Here comes the Compass & Renegade which does have that family appeal & Fiats involving dynamics & superb engines, both petrol & Diesels!
Just have a look at the cars this platform underpins ! its that flexible for a funky crossover or Capable Compact SUVs or even a Compact Pick up!

Also note that the Tucson shares its platform with Kia cousin Sportage ,actually much more than just platform its a reskinning ,Elantra and even the Verna !
Same for Tiguan which sits on the scalable MQB which underpins cars right from new Polo !
I know , Im not saying platform sharing is bad, Im just saying, its not as much of an off roading champ as people are thinking it to be
Its surely impressive off road but dont expect beyond a limit like other 4x4s in the segment

Even BMW X1 is actually a Mini countryman rather than a true BMW
Audi Q3 is a Skoda Yeti/previous gen Tiguan

Also FCA cars are notorious for odd driving position, something they have improved on the Compass but still present
Creta is also odd in this sense though

Actually its very much impressive off the road comparing to its competitors like Duster AWD,XUV AWD,Tucson or CRV or Tiguan !
Its locally produced with good amount of localisation and priced sensibly, that doesn't mean that it wont compete or it should not be compared to its global CKD rivals Tucson & Tiguan !
Also with the huge response FCA currently enjoying on the Compass , I hope they would bring the fully loaded Compass & also the Trailhawk variant to India very soon!

With Compass,Crysta(same price range) even the Tiguan finding decent numbers, it seems like Hyundai missed the boat with Tucson, which had much better potential in our market in the current scenario ,Lets see what Hyundai is planning on it.

The thing is the Jeep Compass competes with cars like Tuscon etc globally and remember Tuscon dosent even offer AWD , now coming to the other things Creta vs jeep, of course there is no comparison the Jeep is far better SUV, the Jeep is a true SUV unlike Creta because its monocoque has a true 4x4 sub frame that Creta does without, it has additional hardware that cannot be retrofitted to a Creta, the off road credential of new Compass is as good as Tiguan but the issue is the tires, for India its a soft road friendly tire, hence it wasnt able to pass some of the off road tests with ease as seen before, also basically FCA is giving a D class SUV at C class price point,
Just like Corolla is a D segment sedan but dosent offer significantly more boot space, legroom , safety features, etc than a Honda City, but does that mean Corolla is inferior, no in no way the Corolla is bad but its just that the platform for global market is made in so and so dimensions and they didnt change it for India as well, same case with jeep
The lack of features is because Jeep is super new to India, so all they need now is market share so keeping features down and lower entry prices will only give opportunity for a customer base, if Jeep Compass and Tuscon is priced similarly nobody will look at Jeep just because Hyundai sis too popular in India , so a good entry price point is the biggest thing they have to keep up to get the customer base.

No one needs AWD/4x4 capabilities as such, those who use it for off roading will rather buy Thar,Safari, Scorpio new or used
Ive had AWD cars before and its never kicked in

Tucson is easily the better car in terms of space, comfort, engine etc

The market is changing with the changes in aspirational & lifestyle needs of the customers, Just have a quick search in YouTube and see how the Indian offroad scene is evolving in a rather rapid pace, You can even see the baby Dusters playing well around in the slush and trails along with Fortuners,Thars,Stormes,Vcross and Scorpios!

I guess few manufacturers are on the right track !

All that said I feel we must support the path of progress, I dont think India dosent need AWD, I strongly say India needs AWD, its just that our people are too conservative when it comes to safety and FUN with automobiles, and that is changing slowly , so I support manufacturers who provide the hardware even if its not a necessity according to majority of our population which according to me is a wrong notion.

AWD is not needed by 99% of customers
Theres nothing conservative about it, we simply dont need AWD because we dont have snow or sand conditions in our daily commute
"Aspirational and lifestyle needs"?
Youtube is filled with events of the same cars off roading with the same participants

People who want an off road vehicle will buy used cars or Mahindra Thar , very few use brand new cars for off roading and not everyone thinks of off roading as fun

I have a tonne of friends abroad and they truly need AWD as a necessity for daily commute , Indians do not with the exception of a minute number of people wanting to use for off roading
even so, they wont buy AWD cars, they will buy proper 4x4s with the extra gear lever

This augurs well for the Jeep brand not just in India, but internationally as well. But I really wish FCA had not skimped on the side airbags for India at the price points that it is selling.

Jeep Compass on GST +CESS correction:

Compass petrol with 155 mm ground clearance + 4m> + 1.4 L petrol engine falls in midsize car slab with 2 % increase ( same as HONDA CITY)

Compass diesel with 155 mm ground clearance + 4m > + 2.0 L engine falls in Large car slab with 5% increase in cess !

Right?

So who all are those SUVs with laden ground clearance of 170 mm+ with 7% increase ?

Anyone have the updated GC data with max gross weight as per ARAI for the HEXA ,Innova,XUV,Duster,Creta ?
