Hyundai i20 Fluidic 2012 Diesel test drive !

Test drove the Asta 1.4 Crdi today so here are my views -

- The white has changed from previous i20 its more off white or mild creamish maybe to make the scratches less visible i guess(not as creamish as the Chevy U-va).

- Car did not have DRL as i had previously imagined thanks to an old pic.

-The electronic folding mirrors are activated by a button on the driver door,i feel its a bit delicate for constant use over the years, the car does not require to be on/ignition to retract mirrors.

-The reverse cam is located right below the emblem on the rear hatch & provides a decent view, video is shown on the left half of the center mirror with yellow bars for guidance.

-The center mirror has light sensor like on most cell phones which detect car headlights through the rear windscreen & dim itself for night mode

-The steering mounted controls for stereo do hamper using the horn properly as horn becomes centrally located, but i got used to it after 2 min of driving so no prob there.

- The sway effect thanks to its long wheel base is realized when you take it crossways over wide speed breakers, its something like what one experiences in the Innova but not that bad as it is not a tall car, this is what many mean by weird handling for example when you hit storm drains which dip at high speed.

- In the previous i20 steering could be adjusted up & downwards where as in the new one it can be moved in & out also(Sportz & Asta).

- The instrument stays illuminated all the time like the Honda Accord/civic but i think this is only on Asta(not sure)

- The driver seat arm rest on the Asta variant is a joke, mite as well get a custom center arm rest done.

- Seats are very firm but they tend to soften over time but not much,so mite as well invest in a good seat cover to soften things up a bit.

- The car does not wake up if your on the lower end of the revs in 2nd gear for atleast 2 sec which is quite bad,but the test drive car had 500 odd on clock so engine mite need some time to settle in as i had not faced this in the 5 speed diesel i20 which a friend has.

- Audio system is decent not great or anything, but it was playing FM radio so with usb it mite get better, did not try the Bluetooth so no comment on that.

- Steering feedback is decent not heavy like one would feel in the Fluidic Verna.

- Rear seat space is not super but decent so with the driver seat moved back for a 6 foot another 6 foot person can manage at the back without putting the knew through the back rest.

- Boot space is comparable to the new notchback Dzire & can be increased if one removes the parcel tray.

- As for the previous steering noise issue which owners faced i do not know if they have rectified this.

- Climate control Ac has something called cluster ionizer which disinfects the air to prevent fungal growth etc in the ac system.

- You can cruise at 60km/hr at 1850 rpm in 4th gear & looks like the gear most would settle on a decent drive.

- When you activate the Defogger this also activates heater on the exterior side mirrors.

- Glove box is well planned & deep, the glovebox door innards has a cavity so you can keep extra things & has a cooling vent so it stays cool when you use the ac.

- There are lot of other random storage spaces & center dashboard console has space for two sunglasses,so not very big.

- You cannot keep anything under the front seats(not much gap) as they have ac vents to aid cooling the rear.

- Automatic rain sensing wipers seem to be a luxurious touch & most welcome, the sensors are located where the center mirror makes contact with the windshield.

- Gear Shift indicator was not much noticeable so i dont know how many would make use of this.

- 14inch alloy wheels looks decent but can look like hubcaps sometimes so not visually appealing,i did not like the choice of Apollo tires on the car but i guess the tire size is meant to provide decent grip with good comfort.

- Asta variant has Smart key with push button start which you need to press clutch & button to start like Chevy Cruz LTZ,whereas Magna(o) & Sportz have foldable key with remote locking.

Overall should say an all-round car with space/quality/power/mileage/safety but not for the enthusiastic driver that wants to feel like the car is in sync,as for mileage i will give you the figures of the 5 speed diesel which i have experience with so 12-14 in the city with ac & 15-18 kmpl for high way(remember fuel economy figures depend on ones driving),so this a hatch which has all the stepping stone luxuries for the Indian consumer.

All the views mentioned are my own,so dont 100 % take my word for it,end of the day only you can choose the right car for you & your Family[drive] , so take a test drive atleast before you decide, hope you enjoyed reading my brief review !

How is clutch and gear shifts ? Are gear shifts smooth and precise and clutch how is the travel and is it light ?
Clutch has a bit more travel than lets say a swift,it was light as a petrol car on the new test drive car,but it can get hard as the clutch reaches 35000km as i noticed on my friends car(he changed it at 42/45000 i think),so 35000 km(friends an energetic driver) before the clutch starts to get hard is not bad.My friends use to destroy all four brake pads around 11000 km so i do not know if this will be the case with other users.

As i would downshift on the test drive car there use to be a big jerk,i guess it was me who had to adjust to releasing the clutch or its the ecu calibrating itself for the load(but am sure with some time i would have gotten used to it),and gear shift has never been an issue with the i20 its been quite slick(anyone can get used to it in an instant) i guess it reminded me of the Ford Ikon gearbox, you dont get any heavy resistance while changing gear, its a 6 speed gear box so in 4th gear at higher revs you can take it up to 120km/hr odd(not red line) after which 5th is a must.
If you want to engage reverse which is next to 1st gear you have to pull a clip below the gear knob(this takes a bit getting used to i feel as i use to screw this up in the Getz crdi).

The chances of a two wheeler damaging your mirror are there so i had asked them how much each mirror costs they told me its 5000(its heated & electronic retract & adjustable)

The sales executive told me this new version produces a bit more torque than the previous one,i have to look into this though.

Noticed there were not many pics of the New i20 so some rough pics i clicked ,the Bronze(in pic) looks very similar to the grey & cannot be differentiated
& another colour called Maharajah Red(in pic) is a bit different in tone than the one offered in i10.

The Bronze colour is a hot seller at the moment.

I received a call from the dealer today saying that my i20 Asta CRDI had been despatched n just yesterday i was talkin to people at honda for jazz. Now as opposed to earlier quote on 9.06 lakh on road, now he said the on road price would be 8.66 Lakh and if i want the extended 3rd yr warranty it would be 9.5k extra so it comes to 8.76 lakh approx. Thanks amar gawade90 & 350Z, because you all had suggested i was being cheated and then i had a chat with my SA.

Anyways now my main concern is he's asked to make the entire payment in 2-3 days after which they'l begin the process of registration and allotment, im new to the car world coz im just a college going student, so if you guys here can help me on how to go about this whole thing like:

1. Am i supposed to make the entire before taking the delivery of the car or should i keep something balance

2. When am i to do the PDI- pre delivery inspection is what i think it means.
Coz the car would be in the stockyard which is in vasai and its 4 hrs for a 2way commute minimum.

And anything that experts on automotive india think is important and i should know.
Pls reply people, i really need to know.

My 1st point in above post was whether i should make the complete payment before delivery.
and also if ull can tell me whats needs to be looked at in a PDI, i mean what should be checked etc.
thanks guys waiting for your replies coz i've got just 2 days.

Heartiest Congratulations. How about sharing an initial ownership experience with us? Would love to read more about it. (Ownership Reviews)

Congrats. Glad to be of some help.

Make sure to perform a thorough PDI first, before handing over the amount. Note the chassis (VIN) number of the car on which the PDI is performed to confirm that the same unit is registered and delivered.

2. When am i to do the PDI- pre delivery inspection is what i think it means. Coz the car would be in the stockyard which is in vasai and its 4 hrs for a 2way commute minimum.
Yes. Perform the PDI as soon as possible in day time. Refer to the following link for complete information (http://www.theautomotiveindia.com/f...pre-delivery-inspection-exhaustive-guide.html) and also download our attached checklist which would be helpful during the inspection.

PS: Please avoid using SMS language. It will make easier for us to understand the message. Thanks.

Drive Safe,
