Re: New Hyundai Verna Fluidic 1.6 VTVT
ill tell you why to use either synth or semi synth.
suppose we have 2 cars one produced this year and one produced in 1980 to be fair well take it as these cars were used sparingly, now take the measurement of the gap between two metal moving surfaces in the engine the gap of the engine made in 1980 will be around 0.04 mm and the one produced this year around 0.01-0.006mm now the space between these two are different what prevents these two surfaces from damaging and eating each other or seizing? the engine oil. we have to look at "x" in the oil viscosity say 40 is "x" so it should be anything like 0w"x" 5w"x" etc 20 is the thinnest and 60 is the thickest both provide lubrication and reduce friction and have additives. I use 40/60 in the engine made in 1980 the oil layer will stay there and do its job. Now if i use 40 in the engine made this year the gap between surfaces is to thin the oil will go and form a film but the surfaces will need more energy to slide against each other the more thicker i add the more energy will be needed. Now if i add the thinner oil in the engine made in 1980 there won't be any protection since the gap is more but in the engine made this year it will make a thin film and provide the needed protection between surfaces and the parts will slide easily with lesser loss in energy.
Say you are driving up hill you determined to stay at a fix speed of 30km/h you are alone but when you fill the car with 4 passengers and go at the same speed you did when alone more petrol will go as more energy is required.
the oils which hyundai service folks use is mineral oil they come in grades of 10w30 15w40 20w50 etc synthetic comes as 0w20 0w30 0w40 5w20 5w30 5w40 5w50 and so on.
the number on left determines how thick the oil will be during cold climates. and on the right how thick it will be when the oil gets hot. Idealy while starting if the oil is thick it won't reach parts quicker, and if its thin while hot you won't get protection well.
so from my explanation you can understand that by using an oil which was specified for an engine a while back will however decrease the fe on our engine. If you read the user manual oil section it states the same thick oil will provide better protection but will decrease fe and make the engine less peppy by a few points which you may/may not notice.
Now on my engine as km clocked dirt came into the oil as oil gets dirty it gets thick, as it got thick fe started coming down.
The reason why hyundai is giving out these oils in service centers is just so that they make costs down. Maruti, honda, tata(they use full synthetic) fiat. could as well do that but they are using 5w30 oils for sx4 ritz a-star. Customer looks more for fe on a petrol engine, however if the customer doesn't want the 5w30 oil they still provide the usual ones.
by the way my service centre uses shell hyundai premium oil. I had checked with mobil1 distributor the barrel costs Rs.40,000 for this 15w40 oil which comes to rs 200/l but they sell it to us for 275/l plus taxes. While synthetic goes around 700/l of a 200litre barrel and they sell it to us at market price of 900-1000/l
