Last week on highway we were enjoying music and suddenly the thump from sub-woofer gone kaput.. [surprise]

After finishing the journey, checked the wiring inside the cabin and found out that there is no power supply to Amplifier. Checked the Bonnet and found out that power supply cord from battery to Amplifier is chewed up by RATS and a stinking half-bitten mango in the hood..

This is the first time I am facing this kind of problem. Have placed Naphthalene balls inside the hood. I hope this will keep away the RATS.
He was enjoying mango under the hood[lol]
Try some rat kill product under the car near front tyres. Use of harmful chemicals should be avoided under the hood or inside cabin , may cause health problems .

Is it not flammable?, may be you should avoid keeping in the hood.

For me tobacco works! You should buy the tobacco leaves, not the once which are cut into small bits and sold in packets.

This one is ideal. It works for me, will post a picture of it in my car hood later.

Typically for Rs30, I get a handful from shops near my place and place it at various places in the hood, it works for atleast 6 months.

I make it a point to change it as soon as my car is back from the regular service.

Also make sure the AC is in circulation mode when you leave the car. This help as it prevents the rats getting inside the car.
Hello sidewinder!

Good to hear that tobacco leaves are working for you!!
Can you help me with the shop in Bangalore where you purchased it. I am from BTM Layout.

Thank you.

For the first time in my life,I also experienced rats in the car. My AC fan was making absolutely high noise and I took it to the service center. What had happened was rats had taken the cloth lining material from the firewall and put it inside the dashboard which was blocking the air intake. Cleaned it up and not yet done any rat kill process.Let me see if the tobacco process works.

Hello Gurus,

My 3 months old XUV is now brutally attacked by rat / rats and they have chewed up a few wires which are seen evidently.
I have placed sticky rat trap and napthalene balls inside the engine compartment.

My question is, Will the rats leave the engine compartment if the engine is started or will they silently remain in their hidden spots? I am yet to find their hidden spots!

Usually rats don't reside inside car cabin or engine bay if car runs at least once in a weak. If car is standing from more than 10-15 days or even more then they can make it their home. They usually attack cars in search of their food, and you know they can chew almost everything except metal .
You can try some ratkill products like Mortein Ratkill etc. under your car near front tyres. Use it carefully if you have pets in your house.
Try to avoid eating in your car, keep it clean, don't leave any edible thing inside while parking .

Re: Rat repellent spray really useful or scam?

Would love to see any response from our friends on your query... I am having this Rat menace since the last 1 yr [frustration]. The only way I was able to counter it is by spraying diesel in the engine bay and placing dry tobacco leaves in few places....

Honda is forcing this during mobilio service. They say it won't come and if something happens they won't charge a penny for repairs due to rat bite.

Just 2 advices-
1.After running in waters and after monsoons, get he car cleaned from outside,a full underbody wash and cabin vacuum.
2.Put a good perfume within cabin so that no foul odour is generated.

The main attraction of rodents is the waste materials that stuck up in underbody during water flooded rides.
Inside cabin if food is consumed, the food odour generally lie within the cabin ,hence i strongly reccomend not to have food stuffs inside car .

Hi getmikeeboy,

I also suffered rat menace in my Gurkha. I got wary about rat in engine bay from possible foot-marks of rat on battery and other places in engine bay, while topping up coolant. As a precaution, purchased mortein rat killer and placed it at number of places in the engine bay. Next day, when I checked the engine bay, I spotted the rat. I tried to hit it with a stick, but it hid behind diesel filter. I thought that with starting engine and some movement of car, Rat will run away. But on checking after 15 minutes, it was very much there and once again, rat managed to hide away.

Then I started for long drive and stopped only after a couple of hours, now again rat was very much there. But this time, I got better of rat and managed to throw it outside the engine bay with help of a stick.

Later checked engine bay thoroughly for damages, but couldn't spot any damage or any more rats.

Here in Himachal, engine bay provides rats an attractive warm spot and the NVH reducing cladding material further holds the heat for longer time, making it even more attractive for rats.

So, from my experience, I can say that rats don't run away from engine bay while vehicle is moving and Mortein rat killer has been ineffective.

By nature, rats are very suspicious and won't touch or bite the rat kill baits easily. Also they don't come to the engine bay for food, rather come for warm shelter, by nature they need to sharpen their teeth continously so as to be ready for food hence nibble the plastic & books.

It is better to spread few grains of Phorate powder in the parking or just on the flooring under the car , it creates a obnoxious smell, one or two feet above the ground level which helps rats & all the serpents to run away. It will drive away the rats hidden in engine bay also.

Also you can create some pouches made up of porous clothes such as Dupatta , and tie or stick them in the engine bay after putting some Phorate powder or tobacco leaves in it. Just take care that you don't tie it exactly in front of air intake of AC.

Hello guys,

I am exactly coming after a 4 month R&D on how to avoid READ AVOID rats getting inside the engine compartment.

Result : Absolutely no traces of rats.

What did I do? Here is what I did :

1. Once in a week i pour around half a liter of Phenol on the floor inside my garage.
2. I have put a lot of naphthalene balls on all corners of the garage.
3. Tobacco leaves are glued on the floor right under the engine compartment and the rear bumpers.
4 Initially I used to temporarily place naphthalene balls inside netted pouches and keep it inside the engine compartment along with tobacco leaves and remove it while i use the car for the day.

By these ways I successfully kept the rats away from my car. Its just that when I enter the garage i get the strong smell of naphthalene balls and phenol, but till now this smell has not come inside the cabin and I am happy about this.

Hi friends!

I own a vokswagen polo,
So yesterday I was washing my car and when I opened the engine compartment I saw that the rat killer that I kept near my front tyres were into small pieces upon my engine area also behind engine in a depth I saw the torn plastic glass was found inside the deep box

Rat killers ain't working as still I can mark their impressions

Looking to this scenario I was worried,
I Google on finding solutions so I read that rat killers ain't efficient they kill the rat on 4-5 days, so they have enough span to destroy the mechanism

I don't know what to do, I don't use car very often, mostly twice a week

Please help how can I protect my car from rats[:)]

+100, That will prevent the rat entering the cabin.
Try the poison spray from Hit,Mortein the stronger one, in side the hood at night after parking, the smell of the spray may keep them away.+ rat poison cake under the car.
Try it continuously for a week or two,it may be one or two rats all rats do not like pipes and wires if it was like that then we all would have the same problem.so get rid of those particular rats.
I read in an article that rat poison kills them in 4-5 days
Not effective!
More over the rat killer attracts them to come inside the car
So keeping rat killer is attracting rats to attack

And I experienced that, I kept it near the tyres and then I noticed on my engine compartment small broken pieces with the rats wastes were found for

So what are the strong and instant remedies?

How about fixing a net in the front as their won't be any way for the rats to get inside?
I hope it won't disturb any other mechanism
Pls suggest whether it's a right step?
