Google Photos starts rolling out AI-powered ‘Ask Photos’ following waitlist sign-ups

Following Google opening a waitlist for access last month, Google Photos is now rolling out “Ask Photos” to some users.

In what appears to be a server-side update for users in the US, as Google previously announced, “Ask Photos” is appearing in the Google Photos app. The AI-powered feature allows for natural-language interactions with your photo library that can include more complex prompts such as asking for Halloween costumes over the years, when your child learned to swim, and more.

Google opened sign-ups for a waitlist for Ask Photos in early September, but is only rolling out the feature now to more users. We’ve seen some limited reports in the past few weeks, but only in the past day have we noticed wider reports as well as had the feature go live on some of our devices.

When the feature becomes available on your account – it works across all of your devices including Android and iOS apps – it appears as a new tab in the Photos app along the bottom bar, replacing the “Search” tab. You can still use classic search, but only after asking the question in Ask Photos first.

On first opening Ask Photos, you’ll be prompted to review how the feature works, what data it has/needs access to, and confirm a few details including ensuring the correct names are attached to people. You also need to set relationships for people and pets, which seems to be sorted by how often those individuals appear in your library.

As for the functionality itself, we’ve noticed that Ask Photos, in our limited testing so far, is best at answering questions that are about people and places, not about events or things.

For instance, asking about when I moved into my house pulled up random pictures from 2013, rather than the images of when I actually moved in a few years ago. But when I asked about when I saw my colleagues, Andrew and Abner, it correctly pulled up the most recent times I’d taken pictures with them. It also correctly found images of when my wife and I drove a boat a few years ago.

But, given many of Google’s examples include things such as finding what food you ate at a specific location or when you did a specific activity at a certain location, it seems to be able to use location data to help narrow the search down. But your results may vary.

The feature isn’t available to all users just yet, but if you signed up for the waitlist sometime in the past few weeks, you’ll probably see Ask Photos pretty soon if you’re not seeing it already.

Google Chat rolls out Video Messaging Feature and Transcription Capabilities for Voice messages

FireShot Capture 727 - Google Chat Rolls Out Video Messaging Feature and Transcription Capab_ ...png

Google has announced new Workspace updates for its messaging platform Google Chat, which is primarily available to all users via Gmail. These features, which include video messaging capability, are aimed at improving the communication between users, saving time and making it more effective. The company also builds upon the voice messaging feature that it introduced earlier this year on Google Chat by taking it a step further with added capabilities.

Video Messages
In a Workspace blog, Google highlighted the introduction of video messaging capability in Google Chat and revealed some of its real-world use cases. It can be used by customer support or sales team members for sharing video updates about new features or account changes, the company says. It is also claimed to come in handy for sharing company-wide updates or a proxy for a live meeting that was missed by members.

Like any other chat message, this feature can be used in direct messages (DMs), group DMs, and spaces, and can be interacted with by quoting, replying or reacting. Messages sent or received will be stored in the Media section of the Shared tab.

However, the video messaging feature has certain limitations, the most notable of which is its availability. As per Google, video messaging in Google Chat is not available on ChromeOS, Linux, and Firefox. While users can receive them on all platforms, they can only be sent on the web. This feature is not available on mobile at the moment.

Voice Message Transcriptions
In a subsequent blog post, Google also announced the rollout of transcription capabilities for voice messages on Google Chat. Following its introduction, users will now see automatic transcriptions of voice messages in Chat on the web and mobile. It can be viewed by tapping on the new View transcript option which appears beneath the voice message. Alternatively, users can also choose to hide transcripts.

Google Maps on Android gets custom vehicle icons in Beta

Google began testing custom vehicle icons in Google Maps on iOS back last year in November and then began rolling them out to a few Android users in December. Now, the Google Maps App on Android is rolling out custom vehicle icons in beta more widely and here’s how you can customise yours.

Once you begin a trip to somewhere, Google prompts you to change the regular blue arrow icon to custom vehicle icons if you want to. If you miss that prompt, you can then tap on the ‘Trip options’ icon next to the cross and tap on ‘Vehicle icon while navigating’. Next, you can swipe left and browse through the five new options and with eight same colour options for each one of them.

The five new custom vehicle icons in Google Maps include a sedan, an SUV, a jeep, a sports car, and a hatchback. You can even choose a colour of your choice for a more personalised touch to the navigation experience on Google Maps.

We spotted the feature in the latest Google Maps Beta on Android bearing version 25.05.02.719889437 on all our devices running, which means it should be available to all beta testers of Google Maps. We couldn’t find the feature on the stable version of Google Maps as of yet.

The reports of arrival of the feature first came back in November in Google Maps on iOS, followed by a limited release on Android a month later.

Back in August of last year, Google redesigned the bottom bar in the Google Maps app on Android. Google Maps reduced its tabs from five to three, removing the Go and Updates tabs in the bottom bar with only “Explore,” “You,” and “Contribute” tabs remaining. The Explore tab remained unchanged, while the Go tab’s functionality got integrated as “Saved trips” under Your lists in the center feed. Further, the “Saved” tab was renamed to the “You” tab, while still offering the same functionality as before.
