Google's Translate on Wednesday introduced support for 13 new languages. It claimed that with the latest addition, Google Translate now serves 103 languages and the search giant says the app approximately covers 99 percent of the online population.

The 13 new languages now supported by Google Translate are Amharic, Corsican, Frisian, Kyrgyz, Hawaiian, Kurdish (Kurmanji), Luxembourgish, Samoan, Scots Gaelic, Shona, Sindhi, Pashto, and Xhosa. Out of the 13 new languages, Sindhi is one which is spoken by people in India as well as Pakistan.

Google Photos Update Makes It Easier to Edit Images

Google has started rolling out an update to its Google Photos service that should help users edit images faster. The update however, is limited to the desktop version, only for now.

Users can now swipe between images while staying in the edit mode. As soon as the user moves away from the edit mode, the edits will be saved automatically and can be undone as well by clicking on "Revert to Original". The change, announced on the Google Photos Google+ post, additionally brings a new aspect ratio selector for an exact crop. Users can choose from Original, Square, 16:9, and 4:3.

Last month, Google said it will be shuttering Picasa to shift its focus to the new Google Photos service launched less than a year ago.

Pictures or videos in Picasa online albums will be automatically available in people's Google Photos accounts. Those wishing not to shift to the new service will still be able to view, download or delete photos in Picasa albums, but the software won't be updated and adding images won't be an option.

Chrome Update Ensures Attackers Won't Be Able to Hide Malicious Extensions

A recent change made to Google Chrome has many users anxious. Many people aren't able to piece together why Chrome is showing them icons for all of their installed extensions. For those who are looking for an answer as well, fret not, it is just a security measure from Google.

Originally planned last year, Google last week flipped the switch on an update that puts all of the extension icons to the right of the omnibar. Furthermore, these extensions also show up in the Chrome Menu (which opens when you click the hamburger icon). Google is ensuring that even if a user hides the extensions from the toolbar, as many do, their icons will still be visible in Chrome menu.

As explained earlier, Google says that many people don't realise the extensions that they have installed on their Chrome Web browser. Not many people check the settings to see how many extensions they have installed - a factor that has been abused by fraudsters and malicious programs.

There is absolutely no downside in seeing all of your extensions. Not only is this a sound measure from the security standpoint, you are likely going to find some extensions that you no longer use. Removing such extensions will free up memory on your computer and make Chrome lighter.

"Unfortunately, extensions consume computing resources, and may have significant security, privacy, and performance impacts. Because of this, we've decided we need to increase user visibility," Google explained.

How Google has made it easy for anyone to install Android N developer preview

For the past couple of years, Google had been showcasing its latest iteration of Android OS at its annual Google I/O event followed by releasing the developer preview version. However, this time around Google surprised everyone by breaking the tradition. Google has released the Android N developer preview version for those who want to test drive it two months before the event and unlike before, it has now made it simpler for everyone to try out the latest OS, not just developers.

Earlier, installing developer preview used to be a painful task, especially for those who are not so tech-savvy. Aimed at developers, it involved a tedious process of unlocking the bootloader, downloading factory image and using flashing software to install the update. In case if anything goes wrong, there are also chances of bricking your smartphone.

Google Now to Soon Get Faster With Low-Latency Offline Voice Recognition

Google recently confirmed that it has developed a new offline speech recognition system that is seven times "faster than real-time." The company published a research paper where it detailed the new offline speech recognition system, and also revealed that it tested the new system on the Nexus 5 without a data connection.

The search giant's abstract for the published paper noted, "We describe a large vocabulary speech recognition system that is accurate, has low latency, and yet has a small enough memory and computational footprint to run faster than real-time on a Nexus 5 Android smartphone."

Google Search Results Will Soon Let You Try Android Games Without Installing Them

Google has announced a number of interesting features for Play Games, one of which is essentially an interactive ad. The feature, dubbed Search Trial Run Ads, will allow users to try out games for a few minutes without having to install them on your Android device first.

The new feature is an extension of "app streaming" that Google had announced in December 2015. The feature allows users to test an app without going through the hassle of downloading and installing them first.

The implementation is pretty user-friendly too. As shown by Google in a blog post, a user when searches for a game title in the built-in search bar (presumably, it also works in Google Chrome) or the Google Search app, in the result they will see a "Try now" button. Clicking this begins the free trial for up to 10 minutes. The feature will begin in rollout within the 'next few weeks'.

Google Hangouts 8.0 for iOS Lets You Record and Send 60-Second Videos

Google last week rolled out Hangouts v8.0 on Android and brought the same version to iOS earlier this week. However, the updated app iOS has brought an exclusive feature where users can record and send videos for a much longer duration than before.

Hangouts 8.0 on iOS will now let users record and send videos for as long as 60 seconds. It is worth mentioning that the messenger app on iOS already had 10-second video recording and sending ability since the app version 2.0 (released in 2014). It is yet to be revealed when the feature will arrive on its Android client as it has not yet got the ability to send 10-second videos.

Chrome OS 49 Update Now Available; Brings Material Redesign, and More

Google started releasing the stable version of the Chrome 49 browser earlier this month (OS X, Windows, and Linux) as well as Android devices. Now, Chrome OS 49 with build 49.0.2623.95 is now available for all Chrome OS devices.

Announcing the new stable build Chrome OS 49 build, Josafat Garcia, Technical Program Manager atGoogle (Chrome) in a blog post added that the new build also contains a number of bug fixes, security updates, and feature enhancements. Garcia revealed that users with Chrome OS systems should start receiving updates over the next several days.

Now use emoji to search pictures in Google Photos

NEW DELHI: Amidst all the pranks that Google played on April Fool's day, the tech giant also made one serious announcement. Google has added an interesting feature to its Google Photos service.

The new feature will enable users to search for their photos using emoji. The search engine giant revealed the news in its official blog post on Google +. The company said that the user just needs to use the tiny little picture instead of typing full words.

Google, Acer build Chrome-base device for video conferences

NEW YORK: Search engine giant Google and Taiwanese hardware and electronics firm Acer have released "Chrome-base for meetings" -- an all-in-one standalone secure video conferencing device.

The $799 device, which has a 24-inch, 1080p touchscreen, high-definition conferencing camera, four microphones and two stereo speakers, is specifically tricked out for video conferences, The Verge reported.

Acer claims that the device has the largest display on any Chrome operating system (OS) computer.

Google search makes it easier to teach ‘animal sounds’ to kids

Internet giant Google has released a new feature that will enable parents to teach children about different noises that animals make. A quick search for “animal noises” on Google returns illustrations of animals, their names and a sample of what sound do they make, Mashable tech website reported. Alternatively, you can also search for something like, “What does the dog say”, to bring up a specific animal sound result, the report added.

Google has included 19 animal sounds in its list, including zebra, ape, cat, lion, moose, owl, pig, cow, duck, elephant, horse, raccoon, bowhead whale, humpback whale, wolf, rooster, sheep, tiger and a turkey.However the selection of animals is limited.

Last year in November, the search giant had also improved its search engine algorithm that would enable users to make complex voice search queries.

So for example if you search for “What are the ingredients for a screwdriver?” it is smart enough to understand that the user meant to ask about cocktail and not the tool. Other complex questions include “Who are the tallest Mavericks players?” or “What are the largest cities in Texas?” Google can now understand words such as “tallest,” and “largest.”

Google Photos for Web Gets Easier Uploading, Keyboard Shortcuts

Google has updated its Google Photos client for the Web. The search giant this time has improved the uploading process for Web users and has introduced keyboard shortcuts as well in the update.

As per the company, the Google Photos Web client would let users save some precious time by uploading photos from the PC directly into an album, including the shared ones. The update would also let them use keyboard shortcuts to edit, enhance, delete, download, search, and perform other actions quickly. All users need to do is to press Shift + the letter or a combination of letters to perform a task.

Some keyboard shortcuts include X to select a photo; Esc. to go back, close or deselect; Z or +/- to zoom in or out images; i to show or hide the image info, / to search for photos, o to show original photo, a to auto enhance a photo, [up] or r to rotate a photos, and much more, as detailed on the company's Google+ post.

Google has announced that Maps for Android and iOS in India will now show traffic alerts to users once navigation mode is switched on.

The updated Maps app will offer a spoken alert about upcoming traffic conditions upon entering a destination on the app, meant to help users identify the route they want to take to their destination. While on the road, users will get a heads up about any congestion in the route, and how long it can take. The Maps app will also suggest alternate routes, including giving explanations for why one is recommended.
