Red Bull sure Vettel flouted team order deliberately

Red Bull boss Christian Horner believes there was nothing accidental about Sebastian Vettel's ignoring of team orders to win the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Vettel plunged his Red Bull team into a huge controversy at Sepang on Sunday when he ignored a pitwall order to hold position and instead overtook team-mate Mark Webber to triumph.

Although Vettel apologised to the team and Webber for what happened - claiming his actions in defying orders were 'not deliberate' - Horner was not convinced.

When asked why the team did not ask Vettel to relinquish the position to Webber in the closing stages to make up for his defiance, Horner said: "Do you honestly think that if we had told him 'slow down and give the place back', he would have given it back?

"There was no point. He had made it quite clear what his intention was by making the move. He knew what the communication was. He had had the communication. He chose to ignore it.

"He put his interest beyond what the team's position was. He was focused on those seven points difference between second and first place - which was wrong. He has accepted it was wrong."

Horner said that the order for Webber and Vettel to hold station was given once they had settled into position after their final stops on lap 43.

The decision was justified because the team was worried letting them race to the flag risked severe tyre degradation problems.

"Following cars very closely destroys tyres," said Horner. "We know we have been marginal all weekend on tyres and what we didn't want to do is run out of tyres and take an unnecessary risk.

"From a team's point of view, we are trying to manage the race from that final stop to the end of the race.

"At this point of the season it made sense to bank the 43 points. All you are doing to allow the two to race from a team perspective is to take unnecessary risk at this stage of the championship.

"Obviously Sebastian chose that he wanted those seven points and chose to take things into his own hands. He has apologised to his team for that and has apologised to Mark for that, and that is it."

Horner said the matter was discussed at length in the post-race team debrief and he hoped the outfit could move on.

"We spoke to both drivers, and I have spoken to both drivers, and Sebastian has apologised to both Mark and the team," said Horner. "So we have conducted our debrief as we would usually do and we will focus on the next race."

I think Vettle has just blown his rear guard. I doubt Mark will do any favor to Vettle this season.

BUT Vettles point of view: Those 7 points advantage could be a very important one come the end of season. I see KIMI and Lotus mounting a serious challenge for the title this season.

Thinking very selfishly about the win and championship made Vettel overtake Mark even after team ordered both of them to detune their engine shows clearly why Vettel will never be a true champion in F1. Mark has every right to be furious and the whole Redbull team felt Vettel was clearly at fault. Vettel needs to learn that a driver can win only if the team supports him. Only a good strategy will result in a F1 victory. The fastest guy with fastest car can never win if he is on a perfect strategy. Vettel needs to learn from friendship of Lewsi-Nico at Mercedes and Alonso-Massa in Ferrari.

It's too early to comment on Lewis as he is just 2 races old with his new team, also not to forget the infamous spat between Alonso and Lewis at Mclaren.
Lewis and Nico have raced together and have bonded well. Nico obeyed his team and correctly knew that the team knew what they were doing unlike Vettel who decided on his own and disobeyed team orders. Vettel had lost reputation in the sport while snatching the lead from Webber when he had detuned the engine. Had webber not detuned the engine Vettel would have never got past Webber.

Renault reveals engine talks with Toro Rosso

Renault has admitted it is negotiating with Toro Rosso.

Currently, the second Red Bull-owned team is powered by Ferrari’s V8 engine.
But it has been rumoured that, in order for the Faenza based squad and ‘big brother’ team Red Bull to more closely collaborate in the new V6 era, Toro Rosso could switch to Renault turbos from next year.

At the moment, Renault supplies four teams – Red Bull, Lotus, Williams and Caterham – which is more than any other engine supplier on the F1 grid.
Asked if four is “the ideal number”, Renault’s Jean-Michel Jalinier told Speed Week: “I don’t think there is an ideal number.

“In 2014, we want – if it is necessary – to supply five teams. We are negotiating with the teams and with Toro Rosso.
“We are ready for five teams.

“But three teams would be good for us, making it easier for us to support all of them,” he admitted.

Asked if another engine supplier entering F1 would ease the load, Jalinier answered: “Yes. Three is not enough to equip all the teams.

“Five (customer teams) is not my first choice.”

Webber senior insists Mark will not walk away

That was the message from Webber's father, Alan, who believes Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel's credibility has suffered with the Milton Keynes-based marque.
Vettel blatantly disregarded an order from team principal Christian Horner to hold station behind Webber as they ran first and second following their final pit stops 14 laps from home.
Vettel, instead, put himself first and was involved in a wheel-to-wheel battle with Webber before going on to take the chequered flag for the 27th time in his F1 career.
In the bitter acrimony that followed the race, Webber claimed, when asked whether he would now consider his future, that he had thought about "many things" in the closing stages.
Speculation surfaced that given Webber's anger he would consider pulling out of the next race weekend in China from April 12-14.
Dismissing the claim, Alan Webber said: "We'll be up in China for the next one."
Webber Snr, speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, has made it clear this latest incident has only served to drive the wedge deeper between his son and Vettel.
"I think it will take a while to earn the respect and trust again," added Webber Snr, who claims the team are far from happy with their three-times world champion.
He added: "Sebastian disobeyed team orders and most, if not all the team, are disappointed with him.
"Up and down the pit lane Mark has not lost any credibility at all. It's probably Sebastian who has lost an awful lot."

Red Bull must brace for Mercedes challenge

The Brackley-based outfit seem to have come up with a car that has proven to be speedy yet reliable although the Briton opted for a fuel-saving strategy that made it difficult for him to chase down the Red Bull drivers towards the end of the race on Sunday.
The ex-McLaren driver was otherwise competitive in his lap times, however, and was closely shadowing Sebastian Vettel for much of the race.
Moreover, team-mate Nico Rosberg was able to emerge unscathed from the chaos at Turn 2 that saw Fernando Alonso damage his front wing and he was a superb support act for Hamilton's pursuit of the Red Bulls.
The German even adhered to an order by team principal Ross Brawn to not overtake Hamilton in the closing stages of the race, allowing the new driver to secure his first podium finish for Mercedes.
All of this has left Hamilton mighty impressed with the team set-up at Mercedes and he's now willing to revise his prediction, made after Saturday's qualifying, on Mercedes' capability to challenge for the Drivers and Constructors' Championship this year.
"We are the second best team," Hamilton told Autosport after the race. "To be that close - I was competing with the Red Bulls at some stages in the race - and to be in that position is a great feeling."
"Unfortunately, we didn't have enough fuel in the car, more so my side. I was fuel-saving from lap 25 and it was very much an impossible task to challenge those up ahead.
"I'm sure if we were all on the same fuel it would have been a different situation."
Despite having been favoured by Brawn in the race, Hamilton inists that he does not see himself as the lead driver for the team. Indeed, he admitted his regret that Rosberg wasn't the one to celebrate on the podium in the post-race press conference as well.
“We don’t have a one and two here. I have always said, from the moment I was speaking to the team, that I wanted equality," he stated.
“I didn’t want to be favoured, I just wanted equality.
“They didn’t even offer to favour me, but I just wanted to make the point that I am not a driver that comes and requests that like a lot of other drivers do.
“You have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say you won fair and square.
“It was just like in Malaysia, I don’t feel like I won my spot fair and square. Although I did drive a decent race, I don’t feel spectacular about it.”

‘Too early’ to predict Webber exit – Red Bull

Red Bull on Wednesday denied reports Mark Webber will surely leave Red Bull at the end of the season.

Major German daily Bild had reported it has learned the 36-year-old Australian will depart at the end of his 2013 contract.

A similar claim was made by Webber’s manager Flavio Briatore, who said he is now sure either Webber or Sebastian Vettel will split with the team as a result of the Malaysia team orders saga.

But Red Bull told the BBC on Wednesday that the claims are “pure speculation”.

“We are two races into the current season and it’s far too early to be talking about 2014,” the team said in a statement.

Red Bull said the Vettel/Webber pairing had been highly successful, but also survived periods of “intense rivalry”, including their collision in Turkey 2010 and occasion that have seen both drivers “ignoring team orders at different times”.

“The team has managed the situation each time in its own way behind closed doors,” said the team.

Force India extends Mercedes engine deal

Force India has extended its agreement with Mercedes-Benz to use the German firm's engines from the 2014 Formula 1 season onwards.

The new deal means Mercedes will supply Force India with power units and KERS under the new regulations that will come into play from next year, when turbo engines will return to F1.

The Silverstone-based squad and Mercedes had joined forces at the start of the 2009 season.

Force India said the expansion of the agreement will include the supply of the gearbox and hydraulic systems.

"Our new agreement with Mercedes-Benz for the coming years is the most significant in the history of Force India," said team boss Vijay Mallya.

"With new powertrain regulations being introduced next year, I can't think of a better partner to work with as F1 enters a new and exciting era.

"The agreement gives us the long-term stability we require and will enable us to continue our journey towards the front of the F1 grid."

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff added: "It is a significant milestone to announce our first long-term agreement for powertrain supply under the 2014 regulations.

"Force India was our first genuine customer in F1 back in 2009 and we are delighted to enter an expanded, long-term relationship with them from 2014 onwards.

"This long-term agreement offers excellent value in terms of the balance between price and performance.

"We hope it will mean Mercedes-Benz and Force India working together for the entire life cycle of the new powertrain generation."

Alonso, Hamilton would also ignore orders

Christian Horner has defended Sebastian Vettel, arguing that Mark Webber has also ignored team orders and that champions do not succeed by being “submissive”.

Now more than a week after the ‘Multi-21′ team orders affair of Malaysia, Red Bull is still dealing with the fallout of the now apparently broken relationship between its race drivers.
After the Sepang race, furious Australian Webber was heard saying little to his German teammate except ‘Multi-21′ — a code apparently meaning ‘hold station’.

Team boss Horner told Sky: “Multi-21 means car 2 ahead of car 1; Multi-12 means car 1 ahead of car 2.

“It’s not that difficult to translate but both our drivers in the last three races have failed to understand both of those messages.

“I think we’re going to give up on that code. We need to probably try something else,” he said.

Vettel has reportedly apologised not only to Webber but to every member of Red Bull’s 600-strong staff.

But Horner insisted: “You don’t win as much as he has by being submissive.

“If Fernando Alonso or Lewis Hamilton were in that position, they would do the same,” he is quoted by Brazil’s Totalrace.

“If Mark Webber was in that position, he would as well. So let’s not talk about it like it’s only Sebastian.”

Webber still in Red Bull's plans for 2014

Speculation has been rife about Webber's future since three-times world champion team-mate Sebastian Vettel blatantly ignored team orders to claim victory from the Australian in the Malaysian Grand Prix nine days ago.
While it is certain Webber will see out his contract this season, doubts whether he will given a new one-year deal, or whether he has the motivation to continue with Red Bull, have surfaced.
Mateschitz, who has long been a supporter of Webber, has claimed if the 36-year-old wishes to continue then he will be firmly considered.
"Whether he retires, only he will choose, but Mark is definitely a candidate for 2014," Mateschitz told German publication Speedweek.
"He is always welcome with us, so too would be a quick junior like (Jean-Eric) Vergne or (Daniel) Ricciardo from the Toro Rosso team.
"Sorry, I know it's a diplomatic answer which leaves everything open, but that's how it is. Everything else is pure speculation."
The same goes for Kimi Raikkonen who has been a stand-out performer since his return to Formula One with Lotus at the start of last season.
The Finn already has links to Mateschitz as he competed for the Red Bull-backed Citroen Junior Team in the World Rally Championship in 2010 and 2011.
Offering an intriguing viewpoint on Raikkonen, Mateschitz said: "Kimi is cool and fast and always a candidate."

Porsche not denying Webber rumours

Porsche has refused to deny rumours it is lining up Mark Webber to lead its charge with a new Le Mans prototype next year.

Amid the ‘Multi-21′ affair and claims the Australian’s place is now untenable alongside Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull, German newspaper Bild reported that the 36-year-old and Porsche have “already been in contact” regarding a 2014 deal.

Asked about the Webber rumours, a spokesman for the carmaker told SID news agency: “Porsche already has a squad of internationally successful works drivers.

“This is a very good basis for the assignment of the corresponding (Le Mans) cockpits.

“Whether and to what extent additional drivers are added will be decided at a later date,” spokesman Oliver Hilger added.
