Delhi Transport Department is soon conducting an online auction of 140 VIP numbers starting from a base price of Rs.20,000 – Rs.5 Lakh.
The project has been in the offing for over a year now. Though e-auctioning of fancy registration numbers had got the cabinet's nod last year, it was stuck after the file was returned by the LG, who advised the department to wait for the elections before the launch.

The AAP government didn't give the green signal, leading to further delay. Now the LG has given the go-ahead, officials said. Transport commissioner Gyanesh Bharti confirmed that the file had been sent to the EC for approval. "We will launch the first auction within days of getting the approval," said Bharti. The back-end software has been tested, added Bharti, allowing an immediate launch after the nod.

As part of the project, premium numbers will be auctioned at a base price ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 5 lakh. The fancy car registration numbers have been divided in five categories with a base price for each. The transport department will announce the registration numbers, which will be put up for sale fortnightly. "Those interested will have to bid and the highest bidder during the 14-day process will eventually get the number," said the official. The highest bidder will get the premium number.

Fancy number 0001 goes for Rs 12.5L in e-auction

NEW DELHI: It was the first time the city government issued 'VIP' or vanity numbers without VIP references and it was richer by Rs 72.4 lakh at the end of the day. On Friday, 29 fancy numbers were sold in Delhi's first e-auction and the highest bid of Rs 12.5 lakh was received for the number 0001. The number 0009 was a distant second at Rs 8.25 lakh, but surprisingly it got a higher bid than 0007 which went for Rs 5.5 lakh.

While the day's highest bidder was businessman Gautam Morarka's Dwarikesh Sugar Industries Ltd for '0001', the second highest bid of Rs 8.25 lakh was made by one Karun Arora while the third highest bid came from Brys Hotels Pvt Ltd for the number 0007.

Nitu Gaur, who took the number for its James Bond association (albeit with an extra zero), said, "I had also bid for the number 0009 as it is the birth date of my husband, but I couldn't get that. I will use this number for my Land Cruiser, which has been imported". Asked how the fancy number made a difference, Nitu said it made her feel special.

While Nitu had set herself a bid limit for the number—she paid Rs 5.5 lakh—Ajit Gaur who bought the number 0006 said he wanted it at any price.

"The number six is very important for me. All my five cars have registration numbers that come to six, although that is through addition. This is the first time I have the single digit six for a registration number," said Ajit, who owns Swami Contractors and wants to use the number on his Audi Q7. Luckily for him, he was the only bidder for 0006 and so got the number for Rs 3 lakh, the base price. "I will get the number in a month, by when my Audi will be delivered. It's priced at Rs 72 lakh."

The transport department said the number 0005 was sold for Rs 3.15 lakh while 0786 fetched Rs 2.10 lakh and 0014 Rs 2 lakh.

Number 0018 was sold for Rs 2 lakh while 0019 was sold for Rs 2.10 lakh.

Apart from these numbers, 0036 was sold for Rs 2.05 lakh, 0111 for Rs 1.35 lakh, 0200 for Rs 1.05 lakh, 0222 for Rs 1 lakh, 0300 for Rs 1.10 lakh, 0777 for Rs 1.40 lakh, 0900 for Rs 1 lakh, 0999 for Rs 1.25 lakh, 1000 for Rs 2 lakh, 1111 for Rs 2.25 lakh, 2222 for Rs 1.15 lakh, 7777 for Rs 2.60 lakh and 9999 for Rs 3.20 lakh.

Nitu Gaur, who took the number 0007 for its James Bond association, plans to use it on her Toyota Land Cruiser. She said the number will make her feel special.
