The Different Types of Upholstery Cleaners
Before you decide which upholstery cleaner to buy, you need to understand the different types of upholstery cleaners and what their labeling mean.
CODE W: WATER-BASED:
Code W refers to fabrics that are man-made such as polyester, nylon, acetate and olefin. These fabrics can be cleaned with Water-based cleaners.
W (water based cleaners): To prevent overall soiling, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean using the foam only from a water-based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent or non-solvent upholstery shampoo.
W: Water-based cleaning agents or foam can be used. Only distilled water should be used. Do not use tap water because it contains minerals which can cause rings or fading.
CODE S: SOLVENT BASED
Code S fabrics include organic fibers such as cotton, rayon, linen, wool, silk along with denim, velour, damask, etc. These fabrics should be cleaned with Solvent-based cleaners.
Spot clean using a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product. Avoid any product containing carbon tetrachloride which is highly toxic.
CODE W-S : SOLVENT AND/OR WATER BASED
Coded W/S fabrics which can be cleaned with either cleaners. Solvent and water-based cleaning agents such as foam or mild water-free cleaning solvents can be used. However, only distilled water should be used.
To prevent overall soiling, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean with a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo or the foam from a mild detergent.
CODE X : which cannot be cleaned with any cleaners at all.
It should only be cleaned by vacuuming or light brushing to remove dirt. Water-based or Solvent-based cleaning agents should not be used on this type of material. However, in this circumstance, it is recommended that you find a professional upholstery cleaning service.
HOME MADE CLEANERS:
Water-based Solution
1 Fill a clean spray bottle with warm water.
2 Add 2 to 3 drops of mild dish washing detergent to the water, depending on the size of the bottle. Use only liquid detergent, never powder.
3 Swirl the water by moving the bottle side-to-side to mix the solution.
4 Add a capful of white vinegar and 1 or 2 pinches of baking soda to the solution. These ingredients help fight odors. Replace the spray bottle's cap and shake the solution thoroughly.
Solvent-based Solution
1 Fill a clean spray bottle halfway with warm water.
2 Fill the remainder of the bottle with a solvent, such as ammonia, rubbing alcohol .
3 Replace the bottle's cap and shake the mixture vigorously.

Tips
Test your solution, especially solvent-based solutions, on an inconspicuous area of the sofa before using it on visible areas.
Never use bleach or fabric softener on microfiber fabrics.
