Fast charging facilities required to increase EV market share: Economic Survey 2019

New Delhi:According to a recent Economic Survey, access to fast charging services is required to increase the market share of electric vehicles.

“Currently, the market share of electric cars in India is only 0.06 per cent when compared to 2 per cent in China and 39 per cent in Norway,” the report said.

Another major impediment is that of time taken for completely charging EVs, compared to conventional vehicles. Even fast chargers can take around half an hour to charge an electric car while slow chargers could take even 8 hours. According to the report, it is, therefore, an important policy issue to come up with universal charging standards for the country as a whole to enable increased investment in creation of such infrastructure.

ea27g2ro_ather-energy-chennai_625x300_08_July_19.jpg

Homegrown EV manufacturer Ather Energy has commenced its operations in Chennai, its second market after Bengaluru. The company held its first customer event last weekend in the city, and has also begun accepting pre-bookings for its electric scooters for a token amount of ₹ 5000. The Ather 450 is priced at ₹ 1.31 lakh, while the entry-level Ather 340 is priced at ₹ 1.11 lakh (all prices, on-road Chennai), and will be officially launched tomorrow. The prices are about ₹ 5000-6000 more expensive than Bangalore. It is to be noted that the on-road price is in-line with the current GST rate of 12 per cent on EVs, and is likely to see a reduction once the GST council approves the five per cent rate as recommended under the Union Budget 2019.

I'd taken a testdrive of Ather S450.

What a scooter. I hit a speed of 70 with a pillion on board. Super quick acceleration. Stops nicely. Sold on it. BUT sadly, they wont come to my place anytime soon.

Cant comment on how it is to live with, if only Ather gave us a month long testdrive. [evil]

id6pqp2o_honda-jazz-ev_625x300_11_July_19.jpg

As India enters into the phase of electric mobility, car manufacturers want to put their best foot forward as regards products. Hyundai just this week launched the Kona electric SUV, making it the first electric SUV in the country and the price is a competitive one at that. ₹ 25.30 lakh for a car which retails at a similar price point in other countries too is quite a landmark pricing for an EV which comes with the latest technology and is more about making the customers comfortable about adopting EV technology than making them averse to the future.
