New Tata Nexon scores 5-star safety rating in GNCAP tests

tata-nexon-left-front-three-quarter2.jpg

The new Tata Nexon has kept the safety standards of the Indian automaker in check by securing a full five-star safety rating in the improved GNCAP tests. With this, the Nexon nameplate continues to be one of the safest compact SUVs since the pre-facelift version too achieved a five-star rating.

tata-nexon-left-side-view3.jpg

With the new and strengthened safety norms in place, Tata Nexon has clocked 32.22 points out of 34 and 44.52 points out of 49, for adult and child occupancy protection, respectively. The tests revealed the SUV proved to provide adequate protection for the front, side, and side pole impact tests.

Recently, the GNCAP authority announced the Tata Safari and Harrier to be the safest cars from an Indian manufacturer. And now, the Nexon bags the second place. It meets the UN127 and GTR9 compulsions for pedestrian protection.

Coming to the safety features, the new Tata Nexon comes equipped with six airbags, ESC, ABS with EBD, seatbelt reminders, and ISOFIX mounts as standard. Moreover, it also benefits from a blind view monitor, 360-degree surround camera, front and rear parking sensors, hill hold control, auto-dimming IRVM, and fog lamps with cornering function.

Made-in-India Citroen eC3 scores Zero stars in Global NCAP Crash Tests

Citroen_ec3_a00e20a904.jpg

Citroën eC3 has been crash tested by the Global NCAP and the results are disappointing. The EV managed zero stars for adult safety and one star for child safety. This is one of the last few tests conducted by the Global NCAP under the #safercarsforIndia campaign as Bharat NCAP becomes fully functional from this year. Here’s why it scored so low.

The eC3 was equipped with dual front airbags, seat belt load limiter and seat belt reminder for the front occupants. Getting into specifics, the car received one star 20.86 out of 34 for adult and 10.55 out of 49 points for child safety. It offered good protection for the front occupant’s head and neck while driver’s chest protection was weak and passenger’s chest protection was poor. The driver’s knee had marginal protection due to dangerous structures behind the fascia, while knee protection was good for the passenger. Footwell area was also rated as unstable.

Interestingly, the bodyshell was rated as stable and capable of withstanding further loads. The side impact tests showed marginal protection overall and adequate for the chest good for abdomen and pelvis. The difference between front and side impact led to a loss of one star in results. The side pole impact test was given a skip as there are no side airbags. The lack of ESC as standard and the seat belt reminder didn’t meet the GNCAP requirements either.

When asked for a comment, this is what the brand had to say, “Stellantis confirms its vehicles comply with all current local market regulations and its commitment to safety with six airbags and additional safety features as standard across products in India during the second half of the year.”

2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift gets 4 stars in JNCAP crash test

The brand-new Swift from Maruti Suzuki will go on sale in May. The hatchback received a 4-star rating in the Japan New Car Assessment Programme (JNCAP) crash test. It is important to remember that the safety specifications of the Swift sold in India will differ slightly. The updated Swift debuted at the Tokyo Mobility Show in Japan last year, and it has recently debuted in the European market.

The video released by NASBA, the Japan Automobile Accident Prevention Organisation, shows the series of crash tests the Swift had to undergo starting from advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), front, side and rear collisions and pedestrian protection. The Swift scored 177.80 points out of 197 and managed 81 per cent in collision safety performance.

The crash tests were done at various speeds from 55 kmph to 64 kmph. The full-wrap frontal collision was done at 55 kmph where the driver’s seat was awarded 4 out of 5 starts while the front passenger side received full marks. The offset frontal collision test took place at 64 kmph where the rear seat scored 3 stars, the lowest in the complete test while the driver’s seat got 4 starts.

The Swift topped the charts at rear collision neck protection for both the driver’s and rear seats. In the case of pedestrian protection, the Swift fared well scoring 4 and 5 stars for head and leg protection respectively.

The video showcased the accuracy and effectiveness of multiple ADAS features. The emergency braking system was tested under various scenarios like vehicle to vehicle, pedestrians for day and night etc. It also received 5 stars for the Lane Departure Prevention System. managed to get 99 per cent in preventive safety performance. The Swift scored 99 per cent in total with ADAS features, but, sadly, it will not be available in India.

Honda Amaze gets 2 stars in latest Global NCAP Crash Test

Honda’s entry-level product, the Amaze sedan, was recently tested by Global NCAP under new protocols. In the crash test, the Honda Amaze scored only 2 stars. The compact sedan competes with the likes of the Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Aura, and Tata Tigor in its segment. According to the crash test agency, the Honda Amaze scored 2 stars for adult occupant safety and zero stars for child occupant protection.

The Honda Amaze was previously tested by Global NCAP in 2019, where it received a 4-star rating. The model tested at that time was made in India and sold in the South African market, tested under the old norms. The Honda Amaze is one of the last few cars to be tested by Global NCAP before India completely transitions to the Bharat NCAP safety assessment program.

Honda Cars India, in an official statement, mentioned that according to the new test protocols, “The car is of a 5-star level, and the lower rating is mainly due to the requirement of certain equipment like Electronic Stability Control and Side Curtain Airbags. We are dedicated to continuously working to enhance our vehicles on all safety parameters and improve them further at model change timing.”

According to the Global NCAP report, both child dummies showed head contact in the frontal impact test. The dummy of the three-year-old suffered from high loadings in the chest and neck, while the dummy of the one-and-a-half-year-old was at risk of being ejected. Missing features like lack of three-point seat belts for all seats, lack of a passenger airbag disconnection switch, and only one provision for CRS installation resulted in a zero-star rating for the Honda Amaze in Child Occupant Protection.

Kia Carens lands 3 Stars in Global NCAP crash tests after 0 Stars in initial test

Kia_Carens_99c2947262.jpg

The Kia Carens underwent a retest at the hands of Global NCAP with the MPV again scoring a 3-star adult occupant rating similar to 2022. However, the difference between the original result and the one from 2024 is that the norms for the crash tests are much more stringent meaning that the original car would likely score lower today. The Carens however did improve in child occupant protection with the 2024 MPV.

Kia_Carens_crash_test_2fd60ff466.jpg

There is however a catch to the MPV’s latest rating. As per Global NCAP, the crash testing agency tested two units of the Carens MPV – one which rolled off the line in May 2023 and one that was manufactured in December 2023. Both offered wildly different results for adult occupant protection. The mid 2023 car scored a zero star rating in adult occupant protection with the MPV scoring zero points in the frontal off-set barrier collision test. Global NCAP said that a key reason for this was the poor protection offered to the driver’s neck in case of a collision.

The late-2023 car tested came with updates to offer improved occupant protection. It offered improved protection to key areas such as the driver’s chest and neck thus helping the MPV secure a 3-star adult occupant protection rating.

Interestingly the child occupant protection rating while improved over the 2022 model also varied between the two units tested. The mid-2023 Carens received a 4-star rating while the late 2023 model got a full 5 stars – scoring just 0.08 points more than the former. Global NCAP said that a key reason for the improved rating for the 2023 and 2024 models was the implementation of I-Size approval for the child restraint system and the provision of three-point seatbelts for all passengers.

Global NCAP says that the zero-star rating is valid for models with VIN numbers ending LPN099741 to LPN144399 with models with VIN numbers LPN144399 and above awarded 3 stars.

Commenting on the performance of the Carens, Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary General said, “There has been an improvement in Kia’s rating for the Carens since our original test when the model scored a zero rating for adult occupant protection. However we were expecting a better performance in the retest given the Carens is fitted with six airbags as standard.”

India-Bound Dacia Duster scores 3 Stars in Euro NCAP Crash test

FireShot Capture 594 - India-Bound Dacia Duster Scores 3 Stars In Euro NCAP Crash Test_ - acko...png

The Dacia Duster, which is set to launch in India as the Renault Duster soon, has been awarded a 3-star rating in the latest round of crash tests by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).

4.jpg

The safety watchdog tested the Duster with a 1.6-litre petrol hybrid powertrain and with a front-wheel drive setup. The rating also applies to the Duster’s variants with 1.0-litre petrol LPG and 1.3-litre petrol engines but not to the 1.3-litre petrol with the four-wheel drive configuration. While a left-hand drive version was crashed by Euro NCAP, the rating also applies to the right-hand drive version as well.

5.jpg

The Dacia Duster scored 28.2 points out of 40 in the adult occupant protection tests. In the front and lateral impact test, the Duster scored 11.4 and 12 points out of 16, respectively. In the rear impact test, it scored 3.6 points out of 4 and in the rescue and extrication tests, it scored 1.2 points out of a possible 4. Euro NCAP notes, “The passenger compartment of the Duster remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy numbers showed good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. Dacia demonstrated that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and those sitting in different positions.”

6.jpg

In the child occupant protection tests, the Dacia Duster scored 41.6 points out of a total of 49. The Duster secured 15.6 points in the front impact test and 8 points in the lateral impact test, with a total of 23.6 points out of 24. Euro NCAP tested the Duster with a dummy of a 6-year-old and a 10-year-old child. As it does not get an integrated child restrain system (CRS) and a child presence detection, it scored 6 points out of 13. Euro NCAP commented, “The passenger compartment of the Duster remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy numbers showed good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. Dacia demonstrated that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and those sitting in different positions.”

3.jpg

The Dacia Duster scored 38.1 points out of 63 in the pedestrian safety tests. In the impact protection tests, the Duster managed to secure 21.9 points out of 36 and 16.2 points out of 27 in the impact mitigation tests. “Protection of the head of a struck pedestrian or cyclist was predominantly good or adequate, with poor results recorded on the stiff windscreen pillars and along the base of the screen. Protection of the head of a struck pedestrian or cyclist was predominantly good or adequate, with poor results recorded on the stiff windscreen pillars and along the base of the screen,” noted Euro NCAP.

In the safety assist test, the Duster managed to score 10.3 points out of 18. Euro NCAP commented, “Protection of the head of a struck pedestrian or cyclist was predominantly good or adequate, with poor results recorded on the stiff windscreen pillars and along the base of the screen."

Made-in-India Maruti Ertiga scores 1 Star in Global NCAP crash test

The Made-in-India Maruti Ertiga was recently tested by Global NCAP, and it scored a disappointing one-star rating. In the video shared by Global NCAP, we see how the Ertiga performed in the crash test. The Ertiga underwent a front offset deformable barrier test at 64 km/h and a side mobile barrier test at 50 km/h.

The video has been shared by Global NCAP on their YouTube channel. Global NCAP conducted this crash test on the Ertiga that is sold in the African market. The Ertiga sold in Africa is actually made in India. In the video shared by Global NCAP, we see how the Ertiga performed in the crash test. The Ertiga underwent a front offset deformable barrier test at 64 km/h and a side mobile barrier test at 50 km/h

In both these tests, Global NCAP didn’t find the build quality of the MPV up to the mark. The Ertiga tested here, as mentioned above, is made in India and comes with two frontal airbags as standard. After the test, Global NCAP rated the structure of the Ertiga as borderline unstable. Ertiga’s footwell area was rated as unstable, and pedal displacement showed injury risks to the lower legs of the driver. Head and neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection for the passenger was good, while the driver’s chest received marginal protection

Side impact protection showed good protection for the head, pelvis, and abdomen, with adequate protection for the chest. The Ertiga does not offer side airbags even as an option. The passenger pretensioner failed to work properly. Child occupant protection was poor for the 18-month-old dummy.

The Child Restraint System (CRS) was installed in the forward-facing position, while best practice indicates a rearward-facing position offers better protection for this age group. Side impact child protection was good. The Ertiga only offers a lap belt in the rear center position, which explains the significant points loss in child occupant protection.

The passenger airbag cannot be disconnected if a rearward-facing CRS is installed in the front seat. The Ertiga offers standard ISOFIX anchorages. The norms of the crash test have changed over the years, which has brought down the score of the Ertiga.

Made in India Renault Triber gets two-star rating in the GNCAP tests

renault-triber-crash-test.jpg

The Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) conducted safety crash tests on the India-manufactured Renault Triber intended for African markets. Unfortunately, this affordable MPV in the Indian market was awarded a disheartening two-star rating for occupant safety.

In 2021, the Triber achieved a 4-star rating in crash tests, but now, under the new rules and regulations, the MPV can only manage 2 stars. It lost points on inadequate chest protection for both driver and passenger in frontal and side-impact tests. Therefore, for adult occupant protection, the Triber scored 22.29 out of 34 points.

Due to a lack of ISOFIX anchorages, the Triber only scored 19.99 out of 49 points. The crash tests showcased that the child dummy was exposed to head, neck, and chest injuries.

The Triber comes standard with two front airbags and due to the lack of side airbags, it didn’t undergo a side pole impact test.

The Global NCAP crash test report states that the Triber’s body structure is deemed unstable, indicating compromised occupant protection in a collision.

Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary General said, “We are disappointed to see global brands like Renault … offer such a low safety performance in markets like South Africa whilst achieving much higher levels of protection in many other global markets. Don’t African consumers deserve the same level of safety?”

New Maruti Dzire scores 5-star safety rating in GNCAP crash test

FireShot Capture 764 - New Dzire Is The First Maruti To Get A 5 Star GNCAP Crash Test Rating_ ...png

A first for Maruti Suzuki, the new Dzire compact sedan has scored 5 stars in the GNCAP crash tests. This was a voluntary test and do note that GNCAP tests are more stringent than the BNCAP tests. The car has scored five stars in adult occupant safety and four stars in child occupant safety. In terms of the scores, the new Dzire has 31.24 points out of 34 which is impressive for adult occupant safety and the child occupant safety is 39.2 out of 42.

FireShot Capture 763 - New Dzire Is The First Maruti To Get A 5 Star GNCAP Crash Test Rating_ ...png

A big reason for that is the fact that the new Dzire now has ESC and pedestrian protection as standard. The new Dzire was submitted by Maruti for voluntary testing. According to the test, the structure and footwell area were stable and can withstand further loadings. Of course, three point seat belts are there for all seating positions. The tests included a pole test which showed full head protection and even the side impact test showed full protection. Compared to the new Dzire, the old Dzire scored two stars for adult occupant safety and two stars for child occupant safety.

new_maruti_suzuki_dzire_earns_five_stars_in_global_ncap_crash_tests_watch_video_full_score_rev...jpg

The earlier Dzire has two frontal airbags as standard when compared to 6 in the new one and that means that the old Dzire had an unstable structure as well as a footwell. An India spec model was used and this is indeed a massive improvement along with removing the safety concerns if there were with earlier Maruti Suzuki cars. The new Dzire will go on sale next week and is based on the 5th generation Heartect platform while getting a new 3 cylinder petrol 1.2 petrol engine.

Previous-generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire has scored only two stars in the GNCAP. Interestingly, it’s also the first time that GNCAP has released the results of an old model after the new one.
