MG 4 electric awarded Five Star Euro NCAP Crash Safety Rating

590024-mg-4-euro-ncap-2.jpg

The new MG 4 all-electric crossover has just been tested by safety watchdogs Euro NCAP and been awarded their maximum five-star safety rating. The MG was among a larger group of fourteen cars (Skoda Octavia, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Lexus RX, to name a few) that were rated in the latest round of crash tests. While MG hasn't made any announcements about bringing the 4 EV to our market, it is slated to showcase it at the upcoming Auto Expo 2023, along with a host of other models including the India-bound Air EV (its most compact EV offering in our market).

Euro NCAP tested the base variant; however, the rating is valid to all variants as well as to both Left-Hand Drive (LHD) and Right-Hand Drive (RHD) layouts. Looking at the category wise rating, the MG 4 scored highest in the Adult Occupant Protection tests with a score of 31.6 out of 38 points (83 per cent), losing majority of its points in the lateral impact test as it provided weak protection for Far-Side Excursion test. It lost some points in the frontal impact test too, as it provided the driver's chest marginal protection and the front passenger adequate protection.

In the Child Occupant Protection tests, it was awarded an 80 per cent rating with a score of 39.5 points out of a possible 49 points. The electric crossover lost 8 points in the Safety Features category as it didn't have i-Size or ISOFIX child restraint system (CRS) in front passenger seat or the middle seat in the second row.

The Safety Assists category resulted in a score of 12.6 points out of 16 (78 per cent), with the EV losing 1.5 points in the Speed Assistance test out mainly in the Occupant status monitoring test. The MG 4 scored the lowest in the Vulnerable Road Users category receiving 30.6 out of 54 points (75 per cent). It lost 8.9 points in the pedestrian impact tests, where it provided poor protection to pedestrians that impacted around the base of the windscreen and the A pillars.

Mahindra Scorpio N gets 5 star Global NCAP rating

96173210.jpg

Mahindra Scorpio-N has rewritten history by becoming the first ever body-on-frame SUV to achieve a 5-star Global NCAP rating. The Scorpio-N is the third SUV after XUV700 and XUV300. The test was conducted as per new Global New Car Assessment Programme’s (GNCAP) crash test protocols that came into effect on July 1st 2022.

Scorpio N.png

In a recent Global NCAP crash test the new Mahindra Scorpio-N secured 5-star safety ratings, making it the safest body-on-frame SUV till date. The Global NCAP crash test has been running a Safer Cars For India initiative promoting introduction of safer cars in the Indian market. In the crash test the Scorpio-N secured 5-star rating for adult safety and 3-star rating for child safety. The Scorpio-N also managed to comply with pole side impact, pedestrian protection UN127, ESC (electronic stability control) according to GTR8 and its fitment, and side head protection airbag fitment.

The Scorpio-N became an instant hit and now with the Global NCAP crash tests it has proven its metal in the safety department as well. Currently the Scorpio-N has the highest waiting period in the country ranging from 80-100 weeks. Earlier Mahindr’s body-on-frame vehicles like the Thar and Marazzo were able to procure 4-star safety ratings in the Global NCAP tests, Mahindra was on the right path of making body-on-frame vehicles safer and Scorpio-N glorifies that success.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R scores 1 star in 2023 Global NCAP crash test

20230404123456_2.jpg

The latest set of Global NCAP crash tests has revealed that the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has scored 1 star for adult crash rating and 0 stars for child safety. The Wagon R was previously tested in 2019 and it received 2 stars. However, this was under less stringent testing parameters compared to 2023, which is why there is a drop in the test scores.

  1. Wagon R scored 19.69 out of 34.00 for adult safety
  2. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R not equipped with ISOFIX child mounts
  3. Bharat NCAP was set to roll out on April 1, 2023

Made-in-India Volkswagen Taigun gets 5-star safety rating in Latin NCAP

vw-taigun-latin-ncap-1-1.jpg

Volkswagen Taigun has proven its safety prowess once again by scoring a full 5-star rating in Latin NCAP. The New Car Assessment Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (Latin NCAP) published this crash test result. It is worth mentioning that the Volkswagen Taigun has already scored a 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP and is one of the safest mid-size SUVs in India.

vw-taigun-latin-ncap-2.jpg

The made-in-India Volkswagen Taigun offers six airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard in the Latin American markets. It achieved 92.47 percent in adult occupant safety, 91.84 percent in child occupant safety, 55.14 percent in pedestrian protection & vulnerable road users and 83.28 percent in safety assist.

The car was tested for frontal impact, side impact, side pole impact, whiplash, pedestrian protection, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) city and interurban, Speed Assist and ESC. According to Latin NCAP, all the standard and tested equipment showed good performance allowing the Taigun to achieve five stars.

Commenting on the results, Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India said, “We’re tremendously proud of the safety track record of our vehicles built on the MQB A0-IN platform. The 5-star rating earned by the Volkswagen Taigun comes close on the heels of similar 5-star Latin NCAP rating for the Volkswagen Virtus.”

He added, “In fact all our INDIA 2.0 models – Volkswagen Taigun, Volkswagen Virtus, Škoda Kushaq and Škoda Slavia have also received the prestigious Global NCAP 5-star ratings for both adult and child occupant protection, making them the safest made-in-India cars. We continue to be committed to bringing Indian buyers the highest quality products, that are on par with what’s available to global markets.”

Citroen C3 gets zero stars in Latin NCAP crash test

citroen-c3-latin-ncap-2.jpg

In a startling development, the Citroen C3 hatchback, which is also available in India, received a 0-star rating in the Latin NCAP crash tests conducted for the Latin American car markets. The tested C3 exhibited an unstable structure, insufficient side head protection, and weak frontal impact protection, resulting in poor safety ratings in the crash test.

The version of the Citroen C3 assessed by Latin NCAP was manufactured in Brazil and comes equipped with dual front airbags and electronic stability control as standard. Across the series of crash tests conducted by Latin NCAP, the hatchback achieved a score of 30.52% for adult occupant protection and 12.10% for child occupant protection. Additionally, the C3 received scores of 49.72% for pedestrian protection and vulnerable road users and 34.88% for safety assistance.

During the frontal impact tests conducted by Latin NCAP on the Citroen C3, the absence of seat belt pretensioners in the hatchback resulted in weak chest protection for the driver and marginally better chest protection for the front passenger. The frontal impact test also revealed a feeble footwell area and an overall unstable front structure of the car. The C3 did not undergo the pole impact test as it lacks standard side head protection.

The Citroen C3 also demonstrated poor performance in the whiplash protection test, although it displayed satisfactory protection for child occupants. However, the ISOFIX anchorages were found to have inadequate markings for child restraint systems. The Latin NCAP tests also highlighted that the airbag warning marking for the co-passenger seat did not meet their safety standards.

The Citroen C3 sold in India bears close resemblance to the Brazilian-spec model in terms of powertrain, and features list. But we are not sure if the model sold in India is exactly same as the Brazilian model structurally. The Indian variant of the C3 has been applauded for its well-tuned driving dynamics and comfortable ride quality. However, it has faced criticism for its minimalistic appeal, lack of features, and subpar fit and finish in certain areas.

The Indian version of the C3 is equipped with dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard but has not yet undergone NCAP crash tests. It is available in India with two engine options: a 1.2-liter 80 PS naturally-aspirated petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and a 1.2-liter 110 PS turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The Citroen C3 is priced starting from Rs 6.16 lakh in India and competes with other models like the recently launched Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch.

China’s Chery Omoda 5 SUV gets 5 Star Safety rating – ANCAP Crash Test

NCAP.png

The 2023 Chery Omoda 5 has earned a five-star safety rating from Australasian independent safety organisation ANCAP, almost five months after the small SUV from China arrived in local showrooms.

NCAP1.png

The five-star result under recent test standards is a dramatic turn-around from the two-star and three-star ratings dealt to the J11 SUV and the J1 hatchback in 2011, during Chery's first short-lived tenure in Australia from 2011 to 2015.

NCAP2.png

Although the Omoda 5’s score is being published in Australia in 2023, it was tested in Europe last year under ANCAP and sister organisation Euro NCAP's 2020-2022 test protocols – which were superseded by stricter standards this year.

NCAP3.png

The Chery Omoda 5's Euro NCAP score was announced last year.

Applicable to all Chery Omoda 5 variants sold in Australia, the small SUV received scores of 87 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 88 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 68 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection (pedestrians and cyclists), and 83 per cent for Safety Assist technology.

It has edged past the minimum results required in each category for a five-star score: 80 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection, 80 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 60 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 70 per cent for Safety Assist.

According to ANCAP, the Chery Omoda 5 performed well in its frontal offset crash test, but the organisation said certain hard elements of the small SUV’s dashboard “could become a potential source of knee injury risk to occupants”.

ANCAP also said the Omoda 5’s side curtain airbags did not deploy "as intended" in its side impact test – resulting in a points penalty.

Despite posting good scores for upper leg impacts against pedestrians, the Chery Omoda 5’s Vulnerable Road User Protection scores are among the lowest compared to other small SUVs tested against ANCAP’s 2020-2022 criteria.

Specific areas where it struggled in the test included pedestrian head impacts and upper leg impacts, culminating in a total of 16.77 points out of 30 available across the two categories.

The SUV’s advanced driver assistance systems also fared well against ANCAP’s tests, particularly the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) car-to-car and junction assist technology.

However, ANCAP said the Chery Omoda 5 “did not respond in a small number of emergency lane keeping test scenarios” in its testing, despite being equipped with newer software intended to fix issues found when the vehicle was tested by Euro NCAP last year.

"Following an update to the lane support software running in Australian-supplied vehicles from April 2023, additional emergency lane keeping (ELK) and lane keep assist (LKA) tests were conducted to assess any potential differences in safety-related vehicle performance," ANCAP said in its media release.

"The additional tests, conducted locally, showed vehicles with the updated software maintained a similar level of performance to the test results obtained in initial European testing, though the local vehicle did not respond in a small number of emergency lane keeping test scenarios and this is reflected in a reduced score," it said.

The Chery Omoda 5 is currently on sale across Australia, priced from $32,990 drive-away in its entry-level ‘BX’ grade, while the better-equipped ‘EX’ starts from $35,990 drive-away.

Hyundai new HB20 scores 3 stars in Latin NCAP crash test

gd_864f5d0cd1f15e.jpg

The New Car Assessment Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin NCAP, fifth publication for 2023 shows encouraging improvements from the new Hyundai HB20 achieving three stars, after making 6 airbags the standard safety equipment for all the region. The unstable structure, weak protection for driver’s chest in the frontal impact test and the low performing pedestrian protection limited the car of achieving higher star rating.

The new Hyundai HB20, produced in Brazil, was rated with three stars. The new HB20 that offers 6 airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard achieved 68.30% in Adult Occupant, 74.85% in Child Occupant, 34.32% in Pedestrian Protection and Vulnerable Road Users and 65.12% in Safety Assist. The car was tested in frontal impact, side impact, pole side impact, whiplash, pedestrian protection and ESC/Moose tests. The most basic safety equipment of the model was tested, other versions include as optional Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Lane Support Systems (LSS).

gd_864f5d0d5f1132.jpg

The previous version of the Hyundai HB20 with only 2 airbags as standard, was tested by Latin NCAP in 2020 with a zero stars result. The manufacturer updated the model making 6 airbags standard and adding ADAS technologies, among other updates.

ASEAN NCAP awarded 5 Star Crash Rating to 2023 Toyota Vios

Toyota-Vios-2023-Wallpaper.png

The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) assessed the recently launched All-New Toyota Vios. When ASEAN NCAP first began in 2011, the Toyota Vios was one of the first eight models that were assessed under its Phase 1 assessment programme, which covered two categories namely Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP). ASEAN NCAP first tested the Toyota Vios in 2012 where the model obtained 4-Star ASEAN NCAP rating with a total score of 13.61 / 16.00 points for the AOP category and it achieved 48% compliance for the COP assessment. ASEAN NCAP then conducted the second assessment on the sedan for its 2018 model under the 2017-2020 assessment protocol. The 2018 Vios was awarded with 5-Star rating in this assessment in which the overall score of 18.41 points was an accumulation from the AOP, COP and Safety Assist (SA) assessment categories.

The All-New Toyota Vios for 2023 made another 5-Star performance in the ASEAN NCAP assessment under the current protocol for 2021-2025. In this latest assessment, the new Vios obtained a total score of 78.70 points with the AOP category receiving 35.25 points, the COP received 16.64 points, the Vios obtained 16.08 points under the SA category and it received 10.73 points for the Motorcyclist Safety (MS) assessment category.

The All-New Toyota Vios offers 6 airbags as standard in majority of its markets with an exception of one of its markets that offers only 2 airbags. The sedan is equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for both frontal and rear seats occupants and Pedestrian Protection technology as standard fitment in all its variants. In addition, there are a number of safety assist technologies available in the new Vios either as standard or optional equipment comprising Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) City, AEB Inter-Urban, AEB Pedestrian, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD) on both sides of the vehicle and Auto High Beam (AHB).

The Toyota Vios is an entry level market model under the Toyota brand and currently one of the most popular models in South East Asia. ASEAN NCAP is proud to have the chance to observe its incredible development beginning from the first assessment that ASEAN NCAP performed on the model in 2012 until now. ASEAN NCAP is pleased that Toyota is committed to ensure the safety of both the vehicle occupants and other road users by equipping the sedan with various safety assist technologies to protect them from unforeseen incidences while driving on the roads. The amazing transformation has indeed benefitted ASEAN road users and ASEAN NCAP extends our congratulations to Toyota for their commendable achievement to strive for better and improved vehicle safety.

BYD Seal, Dolphin EVs score 5-star Euro NCAP rating

Following its latest round of testing, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has awarded both the BYD Seal and Dolphin with a five-star rating. The latter of the two electric vehicles (EVs) has already been launched in Malaysia, with the other expected to go on sale sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.

Both EVs are built on the carmaker’s e-Platform 3.0 and come with a range of standard passive and active safety kit, with the Seal benefitting from enhanced safety thanks to cell-to-body technology. In Euro NCAP’s testing, the sedan managed to score 89% in the adult occupant protection and 87% in child occupant protection.

Meanwhile, in the vulnerable road users category, which covers autonomous emergency braking and impact protection in relation to pedestrians, the Seal managed to score 82%. Lastly, in the safety assist category, the EV managed 76%, with points being deducted for the limited driver monitoring systems that only detects drowsiness.

As for the smaller Dolphin hatchback, the adult and child occupant protection tests registered the same 89% and 87% results. The Dolphin fared slightly better in the vulnerable road users category with a score of 85%, and this is also true in safety assist with a score of 79%.

“Competition between car manufacturers is the driving force behind Euro NCAP’s success. No manufacturer can afford to be left behind when it comes to safety, and this is the motivation for innovation,” said Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP

“The new Chinese brands have hit the ground running, recognising that European car-buyers will not compromise on safety. But technology is evolving faster than ever before, and areas like assisted driving open new areas for competition, and Euro NCAP will ensure that these new technologies are introduced in a way that realises their full safety benefit,” he added.

“We are excited to witness the exceptional performance of all BYD models under the rigorous European safety test conditions. The BYD Seal and the BYD Dolphin now join the BYD Atto 3 in achieving the highest safety test ratings. That is something to be proud of. It underlines how hard BYD relentlessly works in the field of eco-friendly technological development. Customers have the reassurance that safety is always at the forefront of all our innovations,” commented Michael Shu, managing director BYD Europe.

Mahindra Scorpio-N gets Zero-Star crash rating by ANCAP

Mahindra-Scorpio-N-Crash-Test-Rating.jpg

The new Mahindra Scorpio-N scored 5-star crash test rating from Global NCAP under its ‘Safer Cars For India’ campaign. However, the same model has received a zero-star rating in the recently concluded crash test by Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) test. Mahindra had introduced the new Scorpio N SUV in Australia in April 2023 and New Zealand in August 2023.

According to the Australasian NCAP test, the new ANCAP safety rating applies to all variants of the SUV. This zero rating is essentially due to a more stringent protocol followed by ANCAP, where a car needs to have ADAS fitment. This technology is not available on the Mahindra Scorpio N.

The new Mahindra Scorpio-N has received 17.67 points out of maximum 40 in adult occupant protection. The SUV has been awarded with 39.27 points out of 49 in child occupant protection. It also managed to score 23 percent in Vulnerable Road User Protection and 0 percent in safety assist.

The SUV is fitted with dual frontal, side chest-protecting and head-protecting airbags as standard. According to the ANCAP, the side head-protecting airbags do not extend to protect occupants seated in the third row. It also misses out on the centre airbag, which prevent occupant-to-occupant interaction. The ANCAP’s assessment is based on six-seat variants available in Australia; however, the New-Zealand has a 7-seater variant with a bench-type in the second row. The centre seat is fitted with a lap-only seatbelt, which does not offer the same level of protection as a three-point seatbelt.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N misses out on autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, or a lane support system (LSS). Moreover, the seatbelt reminder system is only available for the front seats. According to the ANCAP, the Scorpio-N also misses out on driver monitoring system, a speed limit information function and child presence detection.

Top tether anchorages are not fitted to the centre seating position in the second row of seven-seat variants or third row seating positions of any variant. ANCAP stated that “this vehicle is not suitable for transporting young children in these seating positions.”
