Barricade - Yamaha FZ-16 (2009) - Midnight Black

Longest ride till date for Barricade. Trivandrum-Ooty-Valparai-Trivandrum. 1100+ km.




Hit 120k km



Started developing hickups. Sudden carbon buildup, blocking spark plug. Ended up at Yamaha Service Center in Pollachi. Never seen such dumb technicians. Cleaned up and revved the bike. Diagnosed and said solution and warned plug might clog again. Things were smooth till then. Just after that revv, he checked oil and low on dip stick (will be so for a few minutes after a run). Took the old oil from nearby R15 being drained and topped up, before we could do anything . Assured it will run without any issue.



They were trying to connect R15 to Fi station with bike a kilometer away from terminal with cable falling off every time they started the bike. Same scenario multiple times. In the end, we had to push it back for the cable to reach. No common sense.



Ride continued with hiccups. Low rpm is like low fuel. Prob was with carb. No issue after 3-4k rpm. Check engine light comes intermittently when carb coughs up.

Bought an OEM NGK plug from Pollachi in case plug clogs up.

Currently running on it after engine work, first time using it after the factory fitted one and running on G-Power all these years. There is day-night difference. Cold start is bad and no crispy throttle.

Got bike worked up at Rider's Garage, Trivandrum.




Ended up changing cylinder kit and piston. Timing chain, valve, rocker arm changed at 100k km had to be changed again as the job was botchy. Valve had holes where rocker arm was hitting.

Total bill was ₹ 7,565.00 including parts. Labor was a bit high, but quality of work was good.

Sand lightly, then primer, then paint, then clear coat.

First of all I need to say thank you for explaining each and everything in detail, which helps people like me who are new to mechanical stuff.

Coming to my queries,

1.) Sometimes there is some sound (short circuit like sound) while starting the bike. I have checked with SC and they told it may be due to loose connection in starter relay. They fixed it and but again once in a while the sound is still there. Mostly it comes when i start the bike waiting staring after waiting in signals. Should the starter relay be changed?

2.) Please suggest a headlight bulb, which has good low beam throw. I prefer it to be in the same stock color.

3.) There is some misfiring once in a while and I think its time to change my spark
plug. Should I go for iridium ones or stock one is enough? If possible please share the model num and shop name in trivandrum where i will be able to find it. (I remember you using NGK CPR8EA-9 once and recently NGK CPR8EAGP-9).

Note: I bought my ride (a 2015 OCT FZ16 V1) in OCT 2017, which had an ODO reading of 5k (now its ~10.3k). And it is completely stock.

1. Not sure. Try swapping relay with another FZ.
2. Any 60/55W H4 bulb would do.
3. I've been using G-Power for all these miles and it's a good option. Similar to Iridium characteristics minus the claimed long life. Any plug can be ruined in hands of great mechanics at service centre or carbon build up. G-Power is relatively cheaper. Available at Amruth Auto Spares located right under Bakery Junction flyover opposite RBI.

Now throttle feels smoother than before and cold start also improved.
What is the maximum life of G-Power?
And any maintenance needed for it, like normal NGK?

Used upto 25k km. It's a maintenance free plug. Fit it forget it. Don't adjust gap or anything. I just spray WD40 and wipes off.

Only tried Yamaha PEA. Was good. Smooth performance. But not sure how effective it is in cleaning.

Using some 60/55W H4 for headlight and custom LEd park lights.

Currently I'm using Yamalube FS 10w-40, in starting the engine feels smooth and responsive but after crossing 1700 km there is little vibration and harshness above 4k RPM.
I think you are also using same oil, what's your opinion about Yamalube FS ?
And which one is good for fz engine Motul 5100 or Yamalube?
