iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini debut with OLED displays and 5G support

The iPhone 12 sees a huge change from the iPhone 11 in that it features a Super XDR OLED as against the IPS LCD display on its predecessor.

The iPhone 12 sports a 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2532×1170 pixel, 460 ppi and 1200 nits of peak brightness. The display supports on 60Hz refresh rate and in terms of the design, it retains the wide notch iPhones have been known for since the iPhone 12. Apple says the display is covered by what it calls Ceramic Shield, co-developed with Corning. The Ceramic Shield glass is touted as having “4 times better drop performance” and is “tougher than any smartphone glass”.

In terms of the design, the iPhone 12 presents with a thinner and more refined design. It is said to be 11% thinner, 16% lighter and 15% smaller in volume when compared to the iPhone 11.

The iPhone 12 mini also joined the fray and it is fingered as having the potential to end up as the star product among the lot. The iPhone 12 mini moniker paints the picture of a diminutive model but it presents with a 5.4-inch Super XDR OLED screen with a resolution of 2340x1080pixel. The display also comes with 476 ppi and up to 1200 nits of brightness just like the other models in the lineup.

Apple Maps have now improved Driving and Navigation functions

Apple Maps have received small update at WWDC 2022. Apple announced that its mapping service will soon support multi-stop trips and users will be able to plan their route on the Mac version of the app and send it to their iPhone. Apple has also announced that the Maps app will get an updated look in a number of cities providing a 3D view.

Apple revealed at WWDC that multi stop routing lets you plan up to 15 stops in advance. There is also Siri integration that makes it easy to add stops to the route when you're already on the road.

There are new public transit features as well in iOS 16. Now more than the fare, users will be able to add transit cards to the Apple Wallet. Users can also reload the transit card balance without leaving the Maps app.

Apple Maps arrive on the Web

Apple-maps-on-web-1024x576.jpg

Apple announced the launch of its Maps service on the web, allowing users to access the navigation services from the company on their web browsers. While not a lot of browsers are supported at the moment, bringing Apple Maps over to the web will surely challenge Google Maps in a significant way.

Apple-maps-web.jpg

Apple made the announcement via a blog post, where it said that Apple Maps on the web are now “available in public beta, allowing users around the world to access Maps directly from their browser.” The new Maps on web carry almost the same amount of features that are accessible through the Maps app on Mac, iPhones, iPads, and more devices from the company.

“Now, users can get driving and walking directions; find great places and useful information including photos, hours, ratings, and reviews; take actions like ordering food directly from the Maps place card; and browse curated Guides to discover places to eat, shop, and explore in cities around the world,” said Apple.

The company added that additional features, including Look Around, will be available in the coming months. Not only that, but the company asserted that developers, including those using MapKit JS, can also link out to Maps on the web, so their users can get driving directions, see detailed place information, and more.

Apple Maps on Web: How to access?
Maps on the web is currently available in English, and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. One can access the service by heading over to beta.maps.apple.com. In addition, support for additional languages, browsers, and platforms will be expanded over time, according to the brand.

iOS 18.1 Beta 1 released

Ios-18.1-beta-1-Apple-intelligence--1024x576.jpg

iOS 18.1 Beta 1: Features

The update introduces first set of Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools, new features for Mail and notifications, upgrades to Photos, and more.

The update brings what Apple calls systemwide Writing Tools. With it, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarise text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. Apple Intelligence allows users to choose from different versions of what they have written, adjusting the tone to suit the audience and task at hand, such as finessing a cover letter, to adding humour and creativity to a party invitation.

In addition, Siri is getting a new trigger animation. It can also follow along if users stumble over words and maintain context from one request to the next. Siri can now also give users device support everywhere they go, and answer thousands of questions about how to do something on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It will also be able to read what’s available on the users’ screen and will be able to understand and take action with users’ content in more apps over time.

Apple Intelligence also powers Reduce Interruptions which is a new Focus that surfaces only the notifications that might need immediate attention, like a text about an early pickup from daycare.

Then, in the Notes and Phone apps, users can now record, transcribe, and summarise audio. When a recording is initiated while on a call, participants are automatically notified, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points.

Further, searching for photos and videos has become even more convenient with Apple Intelligence. Natural language can be used to search for specific photos, such as “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt,” or “Katie with stickers on her face.” Search in videos also becomes more powerful with the ability to find specific moments in clips so users can go right to the relevant segment. Additionally, there’s a new Clean Up tool that can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo, which works similar to Google’s Object Eraser.

A new feature called Memories allows users to create a story they want. By using language and image understanding, Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc.

The default Apple Mail App will also be using Apple Intelligence to automatically categorise messages under the “Priority Messages” section. A new section at the top of the inbox shows the most urgent emails, like a same-day dinner invitation or boarding pass.

Features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, Priority Notifications, upgraded Siri with on-screen awareness, and ChatGPT integration aren’t a part of this update (via 9to5Mac).

iOS 18.1 Beta 1: Supported Models
The update is available for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max running on iOS 18 beta. Only the two mentioned iPhone models support Apple Intelligence. In addition, this isn’t a public beta but a developer beta. After updating to iOS 18.1, you can request access to Apple Intelligence by navigating to Settings, selecting the new Apple Intelligence menu, and tapping “Join the waitlist.” You’ll receive a push notification once you’re granted access to the Apple Intelligence beta.

Separately, for iPad users, iPadOS 18.1 is also rolling out. It’s only available for iPad models that have the M1 chip and newer.

Apple launches Apple Invites

Apple-Invites-app-on-iOS-1024x576.jpg

Apple has introduced Apple Invites, a new app for iPhone that helps users create custom invitations to gather friends and family for any occasion. With Apple Invites, users can create and easily share invitations, RSVP, contribute to Shared Albums, and engage with Apple Music playlists.

On iPhones and iPads, one can download the app from the App store and can then choose an image from their photo library or from the app’s gallery of backgrounds — a curated collection of images representing different occasions and event themes. Integrations with Maps and Weather give guests directions to the event and the forecast for that day.

Apple-Invites-app-released.jpg

Additionally, participants can easily contribute photos and videos to a dedicated Shared Album within each invite to help preserve memories and relive the event. And collaborative playlists allow Apple Music subscribers to create a curated event soundtrack that guests can access right from Apple Invites.

Next, with Apple Intelligence, users can create a unique event invitation where they can tap in to the built-in Image Playground experience to produce original images using concepts, descriptions, and people from their photo library. And when composing invitations, users can use Writing Tools to help create a concise yet appealing piece.

As for how one can manage and join events, Hosts get full control of their invite experience: They can easily view and manage their events, share invitations with a link, review RSVPs, and choose the details they want included in the preview, like the event background or a home address.

Guests can view and respond to an invitation using the new iPhone app or on the web without needing an iCloud+ subscription or an Apple Account. Attendees control how their details show up to others, and have the ability to leave or report an event at any time.

iCloud+ subscribers also get the ability to create events in the Apple Invites app. Apple Invites is available today as a free download from the App Store for all iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, and can be accessed on the web at icloud.com/invites.
