The official BSE stock market app is now available in Windows Phone Store. BSE is the Asia’s first Stock Exchange and one of India’s leading exchange groups and it is good to see that financial groups are now delivering their apps for Windows Phone devices at a rapid pace.

BSE on Windows Phone is the official app for keeping track of the stock markets. The app allows you to get quotes, follow the daily market during the trading hours, get daily losers and gainers and details on a particular stock.

The application supports voice commands and you can launch a particular section of the app just by saying “BSE {section name}” e.g. BSE gainers.

Google Play beats App Store with over 1 million apps
Who would have thought? Android’s Google Play store has just officially hit over 1 million apps and has now finally surpassed the Apple App Store and its 900 000 applications. This is a big accomplishment for Android.

The platform initially launched as the underdog, after Apple first started the app craze. But with this news the landscape has changed.

One reason is that Google has made great advances in paying its developers more. They are now receiving 2.5x the money. App downloads have also grown to over 50 billion. This growth is stunning and I see no signs of it slowing down anytime soon.

Along with the new refreshed Nexus 7 and Android 4.3 announcements, Sundar Pichai who oversees Android, Chrome and Google Apps also revealed some statistics about tablet activations and Google Play content downloads.

He states that Google now has 70 million tablet activations, which has increased from around 10 million last year. He also points out that revenue per user on Google Play has gone up 2.5 times over the last one year. Talking about Android apps, Pichai disclosed that Google Play store has hit the 1 million mark. In comparison, Apple's App store has over 900,000 apps, and had hit 50 billion app downloads in May this year. Google too has more than 50 billion app downloads in its kitty, which is more than double the 20 billion downloads announced last year. Pichai further said that one in every two tablets sold is Android. Moreover, Nexus 7 alone contributes to 10 percent of Android tablet market share. At the breakfast event, Pichai also spoke about the "Books" section of the Google Play store, which will now allow Android users to rent or purchase textbooks from various academic publishing houses. The rental periods for these textbooks will be about six months. These textbooks will be offered at a discounted price of up to 80 percent from the normal purchase price. Google Play Textbooks will come with features like searching through the content, creating bookmarks and highlighting passages. In addition to this, the night reading mode will be included to assist students. This will help them read at low light levels during late hours without disturbing others in the room.

Today we’re releasing Android 4.3 — an upgrade to Jelly Bean that introduces a number of new features, including restricted profiles. Android 4.3 also adds Bluetooth Smart support (a.k.a Bluetooth Low-Energy); the latest in 3D graphics through OpenGL ES 3.0; and more.

Restricted profiles for tablets
Lightweight and portable, tablets are perfect for sharing with others. Last October we added support for multiple users. Each person has a separate space and can freely customize the tablet experience, from lockscreen to wallpaper, apps and folders.

In Android 4.3, we're introducing restricted profiles, which let you manage per-user access to apps and content. Restricted profiles can be used in any number of situations. For example, restricted profiles enable parental controls, so certain family members are prevented from accessing mature content. Alternately, retail stores can use tablets as kiosks that show product information, or shops can use tablets as point of sale systems, all while limiting access to apps.

To set up restricted profiles on your tablet, go to the Users section under Settings. Learn more.
Bluetooth Smart support (a.k.a. Bluetooth Low-Energy)
Fitness sensors and other devices that use Bluetooth Smart technology open the door for a whole new class of mobile applications. Bluetooth Smart minimizes power usage while measuring and transmitting data, making both sensors and the phones or tablets connected to them more battery-efficient.

With Android 4.3, Nexus 4 can now connect to Bluetooth Smart sensors. Runtastic and many other developers are making Android apps compatible with these sensors.

Devices like the new Nexus 7 support OpenGL ES 3.0, the latest industry standard for accelerated 3D graphics. This brings photorealism to a whole new level in the games you're playing: blades of grass on the soccer field come alive, asphalt on the street looks real as you screech by, stubble on a villains' face almost pokes out of the screen. And with sophisticated effects like self-shadows, that villain looks even more menacing, casting a shadow on himself.

Dial pad autocomplete
With Android 4.3 we’ve introduced a new autocomplete feature in the dial pad. Just start touching numbers or letters and the dial pad will suggest phone numbers or names. To turn on this feature, open your phone app settings and enable “Dial pad autocomplete”.

Improved support for Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, and more
We’ve made major progress on enabling right-to-left layouts across the platform user interface: dialer, home and lock screens, settings, and more. This work builds on the support that we introduced for right-to-left layouts for Hebrew and Arabic speakers in Android 4.2. We’ve also added support for Hindi, Afrikaans, Amharic, Swahili, and Zulu.

Android 4.3 is now rolling out now to Nexus devices, and will be available on the new Nexus 7 and Google Play edition devices soon. Let us know what you think on our Google+ page for Android.

rooting is a necessary evil

though with XTZ i have not done it yet but it takes a second or so. get the necessary drivers on your pc and click run.bat

4.2 is planned for it and 4.3 is also announced. when Sony has planned everything , i dont need to do anything more as of now.

the 4.2 custom roms for XTZ have issues since some awesome stock apps dont work with them, eg the IR blaster, small apps etc

Blackberry dealt a major blow as O2 Germany dumps their Blackberrys for Windows Phones | WMPoweruser

A month ago we wrote that Telefonica would be throwing their weight behind Windows Phone in an effort to break the iPhone/Android duopoly.

Today in a leaked internal document we are now seeing the first fruit of this effort, with the news that O2 Germany will be dropping all their own Blackberry BES phones for Nokia Lumia 520 and 925 handsets.

The move, which is effective immediately, will see all sales reps carrying Nokia Lumia 520s as their work phone, while store managers and above will get Nokia Lumia 925 handsets, and will see O2 save more than 250,000 Euro ($330,000) in fees to Blackberry.

”With the new mobile service control we now use our internal strategic cooperation with Microsoft to save time and high costs," explained Mario Buchner, Executive Assistant to MD Corporate Affairs & Strategy for Telefónica Germany. "For the next year we are saving more than a quarter million euros due to the elimination of BlackBerry."

Good compatibility with Microsoft’s office products also helped convince O2.

"The integration of Windows products in our System landscape is very simple, "explains Alexander Hofmann, Group Manager Platform Deployment in ST in the document. This is reflected in the smooth synchronization of Calendar entries and e-mails, but also the unrestricted access to all Office applications. So you can on the Windows interface, for example, open and edit PowerPoint documents or ExceI tables. The widely-known problems in representing and editing Office documents with iOS and Android devices does not exist with Windows Phone.

O2 Germany has just purchased E-Plus, making it Germany’s largest carrier and giving it 45% market share. The move to replace their internal systems will also help them sell Windows Phone to consumers and other businesses.

Telefonica’s other operations in U.K., Germany, Spain, Mexico, Brazil and Chile are expected to follow suit soon.

Android ‘Master Key’ Security Hole Puts 99% Of Devices At Risk Of Exploitation

Mobile security startup Bluebox Security has unearthed a vulnerability in Android’s security model which it says means that the nearly 900 million Android phones released in the past four years could be exploited, or some 99% of Android devices. The vulnerability has apparently been around since Android v1.6 (Donut), and was disclosed by the firm to Google back in February. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has already apparently been patched.

It’s likely that Google is working on a patch for the vulnerability. We’ve reached out to the company for comment and will update this story with any response.

Bluebox intends to detail the flaw at the Black Hat USA conference at the end of this month but in the meanwhile it’s written a blog delving into some detail. The vulnerability apparently allows a hacker to turn a legitimate app into a malicious Trojan by modifying APK code without breaking the app’s cryptographic signature. Bluebox says the flaw exploits discrepancies in how Android apps are cryptographically verified and installed. Specifically it allows a hacker to change an app’s code, leaving its cryptographic signature unchanged — thereby tricking Android into believing the app itself is unchanged, and allowing the hacker to wreak their merry havoc.

The flaw is made worse if an attacker targets a sub-set of apps developed by device makers themselves, or third parties — such as Cisco with its AnyConnect VPN app — that work closely with device makers and are granted system UID access. This sub-set of apps can allow a hacker to tap into far more than just mere app data, with the potential to steal passwords and account info and take over the normal running of the phone. Here’s how Bluebox explains it:

Installation of a Trojan application from the device manufacturer can grant the application full access to Android system and all applications (and their data) currently installed. The application then not only has the ability to read arbitrary application data on the device (email, SMS messages, documents, etc.), retrieve all stored account & service passwords, it can essentially take over the normal functioning of the phone and control any function thereof (make arbitrary phone calls, send arbitrary SMS messages, turn on the camera, and record calls). Finally, and most unsettling, is the potential for a hacker to take advantage of the always-on, always-connected, and always-moving (therefore hard-to-detect) nature of these “zombie” mobile devices to create a botnet.
While 99% of Android phones being technically vulnerable to app hackers is a tough stat to ignore, it’s worth emphasising that just because such a flaw (apparently) exists it doesn’t mean it has or will be widely exploited — especially as, in this instance, it has been flagged to Google prior to being made public. And Google is presumably hard at work on a fix.

That said, the nature of the Android ecosystem does slow down the patching process. On the fix front, Bluebox notes that it will be up to device manufacturers to “produce and release firmware updates for mobile devices (and furthermore for users to install these updates)”, adding: “The availability of these updates will widely vary depending upon the manufacturer and model in question.”

Getting timely OS updates has always been a problem for Android users (Nexus owners are the exception), owing to Android’s openness necessarily encouraging variation and fragmentation within the ecosystem
, with different manufacturer skins and carrier additions all standing in the way and delaying updates. That likely means the window of risk attached to this latest Android vulnerability takes longer to close for the majority of users than many would be comfortable with.

In the meantime, Bluebox advises the following:

Device owners should be extra cautious in identifying the publisher of the app they want to download.
Enterprises with BYOD implementations should use this news to prompt all users to update their devices, and to highlight the importance of keeping their devices updated.
IT should see this vulnerability as another driver to move beyond just device management to focus on deep device integrity checking and securing corporate data.
Android is often linked with malware — not because there’s a high actual risk of users being infected with malware but because, in relative terms, it’s the biggest target for mobile malware writers, being as it’s the dominant mobile OS. It’s also not as locked down as some other mobile platforms, making it an easier target for hackers. Yet its worth stressing that mobile malware remains a very marginal risk, even for Android users, and especially if you’re a mainstream user getting your apps from the likes of Google Play, rather than alternative third-party app stores or routes.

This latest Android security flaw adds to the general low-level risk attached to using Android but how widely it ends up being exploited by malware writers remains to be seen — so how much more actual risk it introduces into the ecosystem is hard to quantify.

Given WP's market share there is less risk of getting virus.

If WP does eventually overtake the iPhone (as some predict) then, yes it will be a worthwhile proposition for malware writers to try to circumnavigate the MS app store vetting.

Until that time they will be able to enjoy the "security through obscurity" the Mac owners once had but alas no longer have.

Hackers are smart and they at times can out smart many security gates .

Even if market share increases their will be lesser chances of iOS / windows phone to get virus compared to android .

Since apple and Microsoft have strict rules for apps submiton and a stringent process to check if any app is a malicious app .

Google's open and free nature has its own cons .

Gadget site TechCrunch said that this tallied with a purge on malicious and spammy apps in Google Store, “The ringtone category often includes less-than-reputable publishers, to put it kindly,” said the site.

Historically, Google has removed apps that violate Android’s Terms of Service, including apps with repetitive or misleading descriptions, apps which have been created by “automated tools or wizards” or apps which send messages such as SMS texts on behalf of the users.

In ESET’s 2013 Trends Report, analysts predicted “exponential growth” in mobile malware this year.

“Based on the combination of increased market share, evolving usage patterns, and the current high level of malicious programs targeting mobile devices, ESET predicts an exponential growth of mobile malware in 2013. The company also believes that the malware will become more complex, thus expanding the range of malicious actions that can be performed on an infected device. ,” the report said.

Earlier this month, security blogger Brian Krebs said that a growing black market in Google Developer accounts – sold for $100 apiece – was helping drive the rise of spammy apps.
