Interiors and proportions are a big thumbs up Thar has come a long way as a brand. Those engine! Man finally thar gets what it deserves.
But the exterior gets a big thumbs down, not that the quality or design looks bad. The reason for thumbs down being, Mahindra is a global player now, it recently got into patent issue in US with roxor, they should have taken it as a learning lesson. The gen2 Thar is a completely new vehicle with a completely new platform, they could have made efforts to mark their territory with unique front and rear design. Alas they have ended up designing what looks like a Wrangler knock off, this product will be seen globally the same way we see some of cheap chinese copycat designs! Look at Tata, how they have a unique design language that has evolved, why can't mahindra pull off a same thing? If only Jeep launches the Wrangler in India(which is likely) Mahindra is staring at another infringement claim. Leave that alone this is not a good thing for Indian home bred automobile design, as we will get associated with being cheap copycat automotive designers.

Similarities at the front-

Just look at it you will be able to match many things like-
A) the crease line on the shoulder,
B) the offset difference between the top of the front windshield and the top of the front window,
C) Alignment of headlight wrt to the turn indicators.
D) Bonnet latches!

Similarities at the back-

Leave away everything, just look at the similarities between the alloy wheel design.

I am a big fan of Tata and Mahindra and always wish they make a huge mark globally, yet this is sad!

I was hoping this wouldn't end up as a blatant ripoff, but Mahindra has just done that.
I dont know whether this will be contested by FCA or not legally, Mahindra should know better, considering the Roxor controversy that happened very recently.
For Mahindra, for the most part of last 70 years, they were bringing products based on a license to manufacture Willys Jeep in the 50's.That cannot be claimed as their legacy.
Mr. Mahindra, if you are reading this, your brand's legacy starts now, with the good products you are bringing out now ; case in point the new Marazzo.
Was it so difficult for your team with a design center in United States and having ownership of arguably one of the greatest italian design houses to work towards sufficient differentiation in design from the wrangler.
Though the improved fit and finish and ergonomics are much appreciated, the design philosophy just baffles me.

The SRK design seems outstanding. It will also seems counter the short wheel base bounce/dive issues. I love this look. Hope Mahindra consider this variant. Many will be willing to buy it provided it is below 20L.

Hope Mahindra prices it correctly. [think]

Mahindra should have added a factory fitted snorkel, don't know why Mahindra had omitted it even after seeing the Force motors Gurkha. The snorkel would help the Thar to go the extreme like the Gurkha. The Gurkha has a little more boot space to spare with all forward facing seats but this is not the case in this Thar. And Gurkha has a 5 door variant too, why is Mahindra not thinking of launching a 5 door variant when every seats are forward facing.

Finally the cat's out of the bag! Now at these prices, those off-road/on-road credentials and with those drool-worthy looks, the SUV segment (together with the wannabe FWD hatch-on-stilts-and steroids brigade) will be on notice - the genuine article is here!

Nothing baffling really. The Thar looks like the Wrangler - period. Rather than going for the generic looks of the also-ran FWD hatch-on-steroids brigade (basically the inverted jelly-mould shape with minor variations, replicated by everyone and their cousin!), M&M did the sensible thing. And having learned from their Roxor experience in the US market, I'd feel that M&M is smart enough to stay from such controversial markets. In any case I feel that the domestic demand would be such that M&M would be hard-pressed to keep up.

Plagiarising car design is a global art form. I have been seeing this from the late-90s, when China started flexing their automotive muscles. I remember how we laughed (I was with Mitsui's car carrier fleet as a Ch. Eng. at the time) in Dalian when we saw something called "WindCruiser", looking like a Land Cruiser - rows upon rows of them, parked in the loading bay. All destined for W.Africa.

I read recently that the new Thar has been equipped with BLD (Brake Locking Differential) together with the other standard SUV features. The BLD would be another feather in M&M's cap, since the Thar would probably be the first offering with this feature in this segment. I remember reading long ago (during the Iran-Iraq war) that the original HUMVEE was equipped with this novel feature, albeit in a more rudimentary form. It struck me as an extra ordinary device at the time - giving the vehicle incredible off-road capability. Using a normal open differential together with automatic, progressive, selective wheel braking, it would ensure positive traction even with just one wheel on terra firma! And all this without the huge expense, complexity and power-hungry mechanicals of the Torsen diff, Haldex clutch or their ilk! Perfect for off-road buffs on a budget.
Way to go, M&M!

As much i love this Thar, i also am in pain to see it blatantly copied / inspired from Jeep Wrangler. Feels like being Chinese. when we talk so badly about chinese copying designs left right and center.

Mahindra should have made this different much different than wrangler.
