Tesla recalls about 2.2 Million electric vehicles over Warning Light Font Size

Tesla is recalling about 2.2 million vehicles because the font on the warning lights panel was too small to comply with safety standards, U.S. regulators said on Friday.
“Warning lights with a smaller font size can make critical safety information on the instrument panel difficult to read, increasing the risk of a crash,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a notice.

The recall is one of several that Tesla has made in recent years, a setback for the company, the dominant maker of electric vehicles in the United States. In another hurdle for Tesla, the safety administration said in a separate notice that a U.S. government investigation into steering issues that may have affected 334,000 Tesla vehicles was escalated to an engineering analysis.
The probe, which was opened in July, reviewed more than 2,000 complaints about loss of steering control in the 2023 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles. Tesla drivers who made complaints said they had been unable to turn the steering wheel, or that turning it required increased effort. A majority of people who complained about this issue reported seeing a warning message, “Steering assist reduced,” either before, during or after they had experienced a loss of steering control.

“A portion of drivers described their steering begin to feel ‘notchy’ or ‘clicky’ either prior to or just after the incident,” the agency said. The regulator added that its office of defects investigation was aware of more than 50 vehicles that were towed from places including driveways, parking lots, roadsides and intersections, apparently because of steering-related issues.

Tesla is releasing a software update that will fix the issue free of charge, the safety administration said. The models affected include the 2012 to 2023 Model S, the 2016 to 2024 Model X, the 2017 to 2023 Model 3, 2019 to 2024 Model Y and 2024 Cybertruck vehicles.

GM recalling over 300,000 vehicles over tailgate issue

A recall involving more than 300,000 General Motors vehicles has been issued after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says there's a problem with the tailgate.

According to the auto safety regulator, the Detroit-based automaker is recalling 323,232 of its model year 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks equipped with power-unlatching tailgates.

In some cases, officials found that when water gets into the tailgates, it can cause a short circuit of the electronic gate-release switch. When this happened, the gate may unlatch suddenly and unexpectedly while driving.

If a driver is hauling unsecured cargo in the truck bed when this happens, it can fall out of the vehicle and create "a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash."

As stated in the recall, GM received 136 complaints about the tailgates opening unexpectedly. One complaint resulted in a minor injury and three complaints of minor property damage, GM said.

General Motors said dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies at no cost to drivers. The company advised drivers to make sure their tailgate is securely closed and latched before hitting the road until repairs can be preformed.

GM dealers were also ordered to stop selling affected trucks the affected parts are replaced. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 18. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 for further information.

The recall comes on the heels of a safety issue identified in Honda vehicles. Roughly 750,200 Hondas are being recalled because of a faulty switch that is supposed to disable the passenger airbag when a child is in the front seat.

90,000 Genesis cars recalled due to Fire Risk

Hyundai this week recalled 90,000 Genesis-branded cars built between 2015 and 2019 to address a fire risk to a number of its sedans. The recall affects 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis models, 2017–2019 Genesis G90s, 2017–2019 Genesis G80s, and 2019 Genesis G70s.

According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem is created when water damages the starter solenoid. This, in turn, can cause an electrical short, which Hyundai says "can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving." If the short does cause a fire, the inferno could then potentially engulf the car's engine compartment and move backward through the rest of the car.

The filing states that the brand plans to fix the issue by installing a remedy relay kit in the engine junction box of affected models. As a precaution to avoid turning a car fire into a house fire, owners are being asked to park their cars away from potentially flammable structures until the recall repair is completed.

Hyundai says that a small handful of "thermal incidents" have occurred as a result of the issue, but it is unclear if any of those escalated into an actual car fire. None of those events are known to have caused crashes or injuries, but the danger of a potential fire risk under a car's hood is clear. Any Genesis owner with a car at risk should seek out a recall fix as soon as possible.

Nearly 200,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler 4xes recalled for Windshield Defrosters

Jeep parent automaker Stellantis is recalling more than 199,000 examples of the brand’s Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs for software issues that could disable the windshield defrost system.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-24 Wrangler 4xes and model-year 2022-24 Grand Cherokee 4xes. Some vehicles may have been built with incorrectly programmed hybrid control processor software, which could disable the windshield defrost system under certain conditions. A defective windshield defrosting and defogging system can reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the affected hybrid control processor software for free to resolve the issue. Stellantis will notify owners April 5, but in the meantime, those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-853-1403 (Stellantis’ number for this recall is 04B), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.

Toyota recalls 280,000 pickups and SUVs because transmissions can deliver power even when in neutral

Toyota is recalling about 280,000 pickup trucks and SUVs in the U.S. to fix a transmission problem that can let the vehicles creep forward while in neutral.

The recall covers certain Toyota Tundra pickups and Lexus LX 600 SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years. Also included are 2023 and 2024 Toyota Sequoia SUVs.

Toyota said Wednesday that certain parts of the vehicles' automatic transmissions may not immediately disengage when shifted into neutral. That can transfer some engine power to the wheels. The vehicles could creep forward at low speeds on flat surfaces if the brakes aren't applied, increasing the risk of a crash.

The company wouldn't say whether there have been any crashes or injuries. Dealers will update the transmission software to fix the problem. Owners will be notified by late April, Toyota said.

BMW issues 79,670-Car recall over potential Brake System Malfunction

BMW is recalling 79,670 vehicles over a potential problem with the braking system, as detailed in recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The vehicles involved in the recall include the BMW 530i, 740i, 760i, i5, i7, X1, X5, X6, X7, and XM and the Rolls-Royce Spectre. The majority of vehicles recalled are X1 (14,679), X5 (20,401), and X7 (29,578) models.

According to NHTSA documents, the BMWs' integrated brake system "may not function according to specifications." This may mean drivers experience extended braking distance or potential loss of vehicle control, increasing the possibility of a crash.

The documents state that even in the event of a malfunction, mechanical braking and the emergency brake aren't affected by the issue and the emergency brake would automatically activate in the event of a loss of braking performance. BMW also said that a warning light or message will appear in the instrument cluster if there is a problem with the braking system.

Volkswagen and Audi Cars recalled for a Fueling Issue and Fire Risk

The Volkswagen Group is recalling over 261,000 vehicles from Audi and Volkswagen: the 2015-2020 Audi A3 sedan, 2015-2019 Audi A3 convertible, 2019-2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI sedan, 2015-2019 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen station wagon, and 2015-2020 Volkswagen Golf and GTI hatchbacks. The recall is due to a faulty suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, which could leak and cause a fire. Only front-wheel-drive versions of these vehicles are affected

If vehicles develop this problem, owners may have problems refueling. Fuel could spill or the pump could shut off even if the tank isn’t full. Owners may also notice the odor of gasoline.

Volkswagen and Audi dealerships will replace the faulty suction jet pump with an improved version free of charge. The automakers say they are aware of 1,410 warranty claims related to the problem.

Vehicles that have already been recalled for a similar defect in 2016 will need to have the new fix done.

Ford Transit recalled in the US due to Rear Axle issue

A Ford Transit rear axle recall includes more than 86,000 vans that could lock-up the wheels or cause the driveshafts to separate. The 2023-2024 Ford Transits may have an inadequate amount of rear axle lubricant, leading to rear axle tail bearing damage and seizure.

A driver could have real trouble controlling the van if the wheels lock-up, and a separated driveshaft will allow the Transit to roll away if the parking brake isn't engaged.

Ford opened an investigation in November 2023 after reports of rear axle bearing failures on 2023-2024 Transit vans equipped with 9.75” rear axles.

Ford learned a new lightweight carrier design had been introduced into production in May 2023 at the assembly plant for the Transit 9.75” axles. And the axle lubrication fill volume for the carrier design was reduced by 1.5 pints compared to the axle fill volume of the prior design. Ford also determined a low lubricant level allows for a dry start-up of the rear axle tail bearing which can result in bearing damage.

As of January 23, Ford was aware of 269 warranty reports and 30 field reports, and 19 Transits had alleged rear wheel lock-up and/or loss of motive power. There was also one driveshaft separation.

Nearly 9,000 of the Transit vans are recalled in Canada. Ford Transit recall letters will be mailed March 3, 2024, and dealers may need to replace the axle bearings or axle assemblies.

Jeep recalling 338,000 Grand Cherokees over Steering issue

Jeep is recalling 338,238 Grand Cherokees between the model years of 2021 through 2023 due to a steering issue. In documents recently filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker said the recall involves a steering knuckle that can separate from the upper ball joint and cause the wheel to fall outward. Obviously, that can cause the driver to lose control of the SUV.

The recall applies to both the standard-wheelbase Grand Cherokee and the longer-wheelbase Grand Cherokee L. Jeep says the fix will require dealers to replace pinch bolts in the upper controls arms. This will be done free of charge. The company also plans to mail notification letters to owners whose vehicle is affected by April 12.

This marks the third time this month that Jeep has issued a recall related to the current generation of the Grand Cherokee. While the other two are less likely to potentially cause an accident, nearly 200K models (including some 2021–'24 Jeep Wranglers) could have an issue with their windshield defrosting and defogging system, and 9433 GCs possibly have high-beam headlights that won't activate.

Jeep says both can be fixed free of charge by a dealer through a software update for the former and revised headlight parameters for the latter. Owners looking to find out if their vehicle is affected can check the NHTSA recalls site.

Mercedes recalls 105,000 SUVs over Stalling risk, potential Pedal Break

Safety concerns have prompted two separate recalls for Mercedes SUVs. The first involves the transmission in select GLE and GLS models. The second, affecting fewer units, poses a risk of the brake pedal becoming inoperative for 2024 GLE drivers.

The transmission issue impacts vehicles from the 2020-2023 model years equipped with the six-cylinder engine and the nine-speed automatic. In the U.S., this affects a total of 105,071 vehicles — 32,308 GLE 450s and 72,7633 GLS 450s.

Mercedes initially became aware of the issue in March 2022 but struggled to identify the problem until May 2023, after gathering data from a significant number of vehicles in the field. The complexity of the issue, attributed to various factors, was eventually traced back to the SUV’s transmission software.

The automaker’s investigation found that the issue arises when one of these vehicles shifts from seventh gear down to sixth. If, during such a downshift, the GLE or GLS attempts to abort the shift, while the transmission fluid temperature is low, and the 48-volt starter-alternator attempts recuperation, the engine can stall.

That unexpectedly leaves the driver without motive power, potentially exposing them to rear-end collisions. Mercedes claims that since this is a case of the engine stalling, drivers should have no problem restarting the vehicle. The company says it has developed software to prevent the vehicles from stalling under these circumstances. Starting April 16, Mercedes will contact owners to request that they bring their GLEs and GLSs to a nearby dealer, where the new software will be installed free of charge.

Toyota Tacoma rear Axle recall affects 402,000 Trucks

A Toyota Tacoma rear axle recall involves more than 402,000 trucks with components that can fall off. The recalled 2022-2023 Tacoma trucks may have debris from the welding of the ends of the rear axle assemblies which can cause the retaining nuts to loosen and detach. In addition to the retaining nuts falling off, Toyota says a "part" could separate from the axle and cause stability and braking problems.

Toyota Tacoma rear axle recall letters will be mailed at the end of April 2024 explaining how dealers will inspect the rear axle assemblies and retighten the axle retaining nuts. Any damaged axle components will be repaired or replaced.

About 21,000 of the Tacoma trucks are recalled in Canada. Toyota Tacoma recall letters are expected to be mailed April 13, 2024.

2020 Kia Telluride’s lightbulbs too hot for High Beam Mechanism to handle

Headlights keep getting more complicated and according to a new recall notice, Kia’s suppliers did not adequately consider this fact, and built headlights whose high-beam shield gear mechanism can break as a result of the heat generated by the bulbs.

Kia must recall 35,031 Tellurides from the 2020 model year as a result, as the design flaw leaves drivers without access to their high beams. Affected vehicles were built between January 9 and November 18, 2019.

Fortunately, the automaker says it is not yet aware of any injuries or fatalities that resulted from this issue. However, it says that it has received three reports of alleged deer strikes due to the reduced visibility caused by the lack of high beams.

Despite those complaints, Kia didn’t initially believe this issue necessitated a recall campaign. Although it became aware of the flaw in January 2023, it looked at past precedent from the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). First, it decided to extend the Telluride’s warranty period to 15 years or 150,000 miles (241,402 km) because it did “not create an unreasonable to motor vehicle safety.”

NHTSA agreed with Kia’s position and, in October, the automaker reached out to customers to notify them of the extended warranty campaign. However, by January 2024, the regulator had received several complaints from customers and requested that Kia conduct a proper recall of Tellurides equipped with halogen lightbulbs, to further raise awareness.

Hyundai Elantra recalled to fix faulty Trunk Latches

Hyundai is recalling over 186,000 Elantra sedans from the 2015 and 2016 model years because their trunk latches may fail. If this happens, a person stuck in the trunk will not be able to open it from the inside using the emergency interior trunk release, and the vehicle will not comply with federal regulations. Owners may also notice that the trunk lid becomes more difficult to open from the outside.

To fix the problem, Hyundai dealerships will replace the trunk latch with a more durable part free of charge. Owners who already paid for a repair out of pocket may be eligible for reimbursement.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai says there have been 11,724 reports of trunk latch failures but none resulting in injuries or crashes.

Kia Stinger, K900 recalled as Turbo Oil pipe could melt sparking Fire fears

Kia is recalling 36,248 Stingers and K900s in the United States over fears that a pipe feeding oil to the turbocharger could suffer heat damage, allowing the flammable liquid to leak onto a hot surface and combust.

The problem affects 2019-2020 Kia K900s and 2018–2022 Stingers (as well as a single 2023 Stinger) equipped with the 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 and was first identified in June. The automaker received a report from its home market, Korea, in which a driver saw smoke coming from the engine compartment of their vehicle.

In its analysis of the fire, Kia determined that the oil feed pipe on the left side of the turbocharger can deteriorate over time as a result of its proximity to the exhaust manifold and the radiant heat coming off it. That can lead to melting, cracking, and, ultimately, an oil leak.

Owners of affected Stingers and K900s are advised to be on the lookout for white smoke, a burning smell, or an oil leak coming from the engine compartment. In addition to an oil pressure warning light, there may be signs that the vehicle is experiencing this issue.
