Honda recalls 2.8 million vehicles for fuel pump issue

A Honda fuel pump recall involves more than 2.8 million vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, and this fuel pump recall follows other Honda recalls to replace the same defective DENSO fuel pumps.

The DENSO fuel pump impellers located inside the pumps were not molded correctly which caused low-density impellers. The impeller can absorb gasoline and deform, making contact with the body of the fuel pump. This can cause the fuel pumps to fail and these Acura and Honda vehicles to stall.

  • 2018-2020 Acura MDX
  • 2018-2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid
  • 2017-2020 Acura NSX
  • 2018-2020 Acura RDX
  • 2018-2020 Acura RLX
  • 2018-2020 Acura TLX
Honda Fuel Pump Recall
  • 2018-2020 Honda Accord
  • 2017-2020 Honda Accord Hybrid
  • 2018-2020 Honda Civic
  • 2018-2020 Honda Civic Type R
  • 2018-2019 Honda Clarity Plug in Hybrid
  • 2018-2020 Honda CR-V
  • 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid
  • 2018-2019 Honda Fit
  • 2018-2020 Honda HR-V
  • 2019-2020 Honda Insight
  • 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey
  • 2019-2020 Honda Passport
  • 2017-2020 Honda Pilot
  • 2018-2020 Honda Ridgeline
Drivers may also notice illuminated warning lights, problems starting the vehicles a loss of power. Honda and other automakers have suffered a lot of problems due to the DENSO fuel pumps. In May 2020, Honda issued a fuel pump recall and then issued another fuel pump recall in March 2021.

However, Honda saw a trend of fuel pump failures in Japan and reopened an investigation. In December, Honda announced fuel pump recalls in China and Japan for vehicles not previously recalled for fuel pump failures. Once all affected vehicles were confirmed, the U.S. and Canada Honda fuel pump recalls were issued. Since January 2018, Honda has received more than 4,000 fuel pump warranty claims, but no reports of injuries or deaths.

Honda says the fuel pump recall also affects 297,836 vehicles in Canada. Honda is offering a reimbursement program if you paid your own money for DENSO fuel pump repairs or replacements.

The replacement fuel pump modules have greater density and expanded clearance between the impeller and fuel pump body. The Acura and Honda fuel pump recall will be performed in stages as dealers gather the replacement parts.

Initial mailed fuel pump recall letters will be sent in February 2024 to all owners. As replacement fuel pumps are available, owners will be notified when their local dealerships are ready to perform repairs.

Kia recalls more Sorento SUVs for Fire Risk

Kia has recalled its 2011 Kia Sorento SUVs to prevent engine compartment fires that can occur while driving. Nearly 80,000 vehicles are recalled to install knock sensor detection system software or possibly replace the engines.

The 2011 Kia Sorento recall includes vehicles equipped with Theta II 2.4L MPI engines that have not had knock sensor software installed. Once the knock sensor software is installed, Kia will extend warranty coverage for 15 years or 150,000 miles for engine long block assembly repairs.

In December 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration upgraded an engine fire investigation to look into non-crash fires in 2011-2016 Kia models.

Hyundai and Kia have spent years ordering recalls and fighting class action lawsuits, but to date Kia says a "cause resulting from a manufacturing or design defect has not been identified."

Sorento owners should listen for engine noise and watch for illuminated check engine lights or smoke. Kia Sorento engine fire recall letters will be mailed February 9, 2024.

Mercedes fuel Pump issue prompts recall, around 80,000 vehicles affected

A Mercedes-Benz fuel pump recall involves 2021-2024 GLE-Class, GLS-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, GLC-Class, CLS-Class, AMG GT, and G-Class vehicles. More than 87,200 vehicles contain fuel pumps that may shut down and cause the vehicles to stall and fail to restart.

The Mercedes fuel pump recall is an expansion of a June 2023 fuel pump recall of about 160,000 Mercedes vehicles. The fuel pumps have impellers that can absorb gasoline, deform and make contact with the fuel pump housings. Damage to the pump can cause the pump to suddenly shut off, including while driving. And a failed fuel pump typically means a tow truck.

Driver warnings may include the engine running rough and a warning message on the instrument panel. Mercedes has received 1,900 fuel pump warranty claims and field reports between May 14, 2022, to November 15, 2023. Then there are the 2,031 claims and reports received between August 30, 2021, and May 5, 2023.

However, there have been no crash or injury reports, as well as no property damage reports. About 7,500 of the vehicles are recalled in Canada.

Mercedes dealers will replace the fuel pumps once recall letters are mailed February 13, 2024.

2021-2023 Ford F-150 Trucks are recalled due to Axle Concerns

A 2021-2023 Ford F-150 recall involves 113,000 trucks equipped with Trailer Tow Max Duty packages and 9.75-inch heavy-duty axles with 3/4 float axle designs. Ford says the rear axle hub bolts may wear out, break and damage the axle hub splines.

A Ford F-150 can roll away unless the parking brake is engaged. However, that's not the only problem. Stripped rear axle hub splines may also result in loss of motive power while driving in 4X2 mode. A Ford F-150 driver may hear a clicking noise and if the bolt breaks, the noise will change to a rattle.

In June 2022, the government contacted Ford about reports of broken axle hub bolts on 2021-2022 F-150 trucks equipped with the 9.75-inch HD ¾ float axles. Ford approved customer satisfaction actions in September 2022 for trucks equipped with 9.75-inch HD ¾ float axles. Ford determined a safety risk was low because drivers had plenty of warning, and dealers were finding the problem during routine maintenance.

Ford also says it determined the wheels could not separate from the trucks. As of December 2, 2023, there were 376 warranty reports related to rear axle bolt breakage and stripped hub splines resulting in loss of motive power and/or loss of PARK. Ford is not aware of any reports of crashes or injuries.

Ford is still working on how dealers will fix the problem, but owners should visit dealerships if the trucks experience symptoms such as rattles or clicking.

Ford F-150 tow package recall letters will be mailed January 29, 2024.

Fire causes Hyundai Kona recall for Battery Cables

More than 13,200 model year 2024 Hyundai Kona SUVs are recalled because the 12-volt positive battery cables may chafe against the engine control module brackets and short circuit during crash impacts.

In November 2023, Hyundai was notified by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety of an engine compartment fire that occurred on a 2024 Hyundai Kona 1.6T-GDI AWD test vehicle during a 40% frontal overlap crash test performed at about 40 mph. Smoke and flames were seen in the engine compartment about two minutes following the crash test.

IHS claimed the thermal activity ceased shortly after disconnecting the 12-volt auxiliary battery. This caused Hyundai to open an investigation into the fire. The Hyundai Kona was torn down and the alternator and 12-volt positive (B+) power wiring located underneath the ECM were damaged due to heat with the copper cores exposed. Additionally, the ECM bracket was pushed directly into the 12-volt positive (B+) battery cable due to the crash impact.

Hyundai performed Kona crash testing using new sheathing to protect the 12-volt positive wiring from electrical shorting caused by the ECM bracket. The crash test was performed successfully and confirmed no damage to the 12-volt positive wiring. About 2,219 Konas are recalled in Canada.

Hyundai Kona recall letters should be mailed February 23, 2024, and dealerships will install sheathing over the 12-volt positive (B+) and alternator wiring connected to the junction blocks located in the engine compartments.

Ford EcoSport and Focus recalled for Engine Issues

Ford is recalling nearly 140,000 EcoSport SUVs from the 2018–2022 model years and Focus sedans and hatchbacks from the 2016–2018 model years to fix a problem that could cause the engine and power brakes to fail while driving. The recalled vehicles all have a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine and an automatic transmission.

There has already been one crash involving two injuries and nearly 2,100 warranty claims allegedly related to this issue, according to documents Ford provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In 2022, after receiving reports of oil pump failures without any crashes or injuries, Ford determined that the problem was not a safety concern. In September 2023, NHTSA opened an investigation into EcoBoost oil pump issues. Ultimately, the automaker decided to recall some of these cars and SUVs.

As a repair, Ford dealerships will replace the oil pump drive belt tensioner assembly with a redesigned part, free of charge. These replacement parts are not currently available, but Ford will notify owners when they are.

As with all recalls, Ford will reimburse eligible owners for certain related repairs performed before the recall was announced.

Audi recall: Stop using 220V/240V Portable Charging Cables

Audi owners are warned to stop using the 220V/240V compact/portable charging cables and only use the 110V home charging cables or public charging stations in 105,000 of these recalled vehicles.
  • 2022-2024 Audi e-tron and RS e-tron GT
  • 2020-2021 Audi A8 PHEV
  • 2019-2024 Audi e-tron Quattro
  • 2020-2024 Audi e-tron Sportback Quattro
  • 2022-2024 Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback
  • 2020-2024 Audi Q5 PHEV
  • 2021-2022 Audi A7 PHEV
Audi says the recall was announced not for defective Audi equipment, but because of household power outlets, wiring or circuit breakers that cannot handle the required electrical current. Certain home power outlets might not handle the 100% charge setting electrical current for the charging systems which can cause the charging cables to overheat and possibly melt. Be careful if the charging cable feels hot when you unplug it after charging.

Audi expects to mail interim recall letters February 9, 2024, explaining the recall and safety risk. Second recall notices will be mailed once dealers have new replacement 220V/240V compact/portable charging cables with temperature sensors.

Audi believes it will be the middle of 2024 before replacement cables are available.

Cummins to recall and repair 600,000 Ram vehicles in record $2 billion emissions settlement

Cummins will recall and repair engine control software in more than 600,000 Ram vehicles equipped with the company's diesel engines, part of a record $2 billion federal settlement over allegations that it installed software "defeat devices" that bypassed emissions testing and certification requirements, the U.S. Justice Department announced Wednesday.

The engine manufacturer is accused of circumventing emissions testing by using devices that can bypass or defeat emissions controls. Cummins will pay a previously announced $1.675 billion civil penalty to settle claims – the largest ever secured under the Clean Air Act – as well as an additional $325 million for remedies.

Over the course of a decade, hundreds of thousands of Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, manufactured by Stellantis, were equipped with Cummins diesel engines that incorporated the bypass engine control software. This includes 630,000 vehicles installed with illegal defeat devices and 330,000 equipped with undisclosed auxiliary emission control devices.

Attorney General Merrick Garland called the agreement "historic."

"The types of devices we allege that Cummins installed in its engines to cheat federal environmental laws have a significant and harmful impact on people's health and safety," he said in a statement.

Officials could not estimate how many of those vehicles are currently on the road, but Cummins – which has maintained it has not done anything wrong – will undertake a nationwide recall of more than 600,000 noncompliant Ram vehicles as part of the agreement.

In a statement, Cummins said it is "looking forward to obtaining certainty as we conclude this lengthy matter and continue to deliver on our mission of powering a more prosperous world. We remain committed to advancing our Destination Zero strategy — Cummins' vision for achieving a zero-emissions future — which is driven by decarbonization and aimed at promoting economic growth while using fewer of the world's resources."

The Clean Air Act, a federal law enacted in 1963 to reduce and control air pollution across the nation, requires car and engine manufacturers to comply with emission limits to protect the environment and human health.

The transportation sector is responsible for about one-third of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and much of that stems from light-duty vehicles. Limits aim to curb emissions, especially from burning gasoline and diesel fuel, including carbon dioxide and other problematic pollutants.

Ram truck recall
Under the settlement, Cummins must work with Stellantis unit Fiat Chrysler and its dealers on the recall and repair program.

The program will remove defeat devices from the Ram pickup trucks that were impacted, which the Justice Department said are from the 2013-2019 model years. The repairs will be made free of charge and bring the trucks into compliance with Clean Air Act standards. "Cummins has already started the recall and repair program required by the settlement," the agency added.

Nissan Steering Wheel Emblem recall expanded

A Nissan steering wheel emblem recall has been expanded to include more model years of the affected vehicles. The Nissan steering wheel emblem recall was first announced in February 2023 for about 414,000 model year 2008-2011 vehicles.

The “Nissan” emblem on the driver’s airbag module cover on the steering wheel may crack over time due to issues during production of the emblems. According to Nissan, the faulty steering wheel emblems may have been installed during theft or collision repairs on these models.
  • 2004-2012 Nissan Titan
  • 2004-2012 Nissan Armada
  • 2005-2012 Nissan Pathfinder
  • 2005-2013 Nissan Frontier
  • 2005-2013 Nissan Xterra
  • 2004-2008 Nissan Quest
The resin emblem and retainer components could detach when the driver-side airbag deploys, turning the emblem and retainer components into dangerous high-speed projectiles.

A Nissan owner should contact their dealership if the steering wheel emblem is loose or cracked. And a dealer should be contacted if the Nissan steering wheel emblem is missing. Nissan dealers will inspect and possibly replace the driver’s airbag covers with new covers, a job that should take less than two hours.

GM again Rrcalls Verano and Cruze over Roof-Rail Airbags

General Motors has again recalled 2014 Buick Verano and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles for roof-rail airbag inflators that could blow apart at the weld joints. This recall of about 24,000 Verano and Cruze vehicles is an expansion of an October 2023 recall of the same GM vehicles for the same problems.

The roof rails are located above the headliners, and a rupture at the weld joint can allow compressed gas to escape and cause the airbag to partially inflate. General Motors says the metal inflator could enter the vehicle or even exit it. This means anything around the vehicle could be hit with metal.

The automaker first notified the government about the October 2023 recall after three incidents involving roof-rail airbag inflator ruptures. GM collected inflator chambers which were built by two different suppliers.

The problem was eventually traced to the inflator chamber supplier, Norma Group. GM dealerships will replace the roof-rail airbag modules if necessary, but dealers must first collect replacement parts.

About 3,525 of the vehicles are recalled in Canada. GM will mail first recall letters February 5, 2024, and second recall letters will be mailed when dealers are ready to make repairs.

Mazda CX-90 recall issued over Steering problems

A 2024 Mazda CX-90 steering recall involves nearly 44,000 SUVs because of problems with the steering worm gears. Mazda says a 2024 CX-90 driver may feel a sudden increase in steering effort.

The worm gear is in the steering gear assembly which transmits power generated by the power steering motor. But in the Mazda CX-90 vehicles, the friction force of the worm gear may be too much. This is when the driver will feel the steering wheel get harder to turn.

According to Mazda, a driver will have no warning of a problem until the steering effort increases.

Mazda says there have been no crash or injury reports related to the steering problems.

Kia recalling 100K Sportage and Carnival models over Roof Molding

Kia is issuing a recall with NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) that includes over 100,000 Sportage and Carnival models. The issue causing the recall stems from the roof molding. According to documents filed with NHTSA, the roof molding of affected vehicles may detach from the rest of the car, resulting in an increasing risk of a crash.

Interestingly, although the recall for both vehicles is the same, they originate from separate factories. The Sportage recall spans 40,426 vehicles from 2023-2023 and impacts cars built in Georgia, while the Carnival recall spans 60,623 vehicles from 2022-2024 and impacts cars built in Korea. According to NHTSA documents, only one percent of the vehicles in the recall are estimated to be defective.

Documents filed with NHTSA state that the roof molding may become loose or detach from the vehicle either due to interference of the roof molding retaining clips with excessive roof panel sealer or due to improper installation of the roof molding while the vehicles were being assembled.

Range Rover SUVs recalled to fix faulty Backup Cameras

Land Rover is recalling over 58,000 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs from the 2018 through 2022 model years because their backup cameras may not display a visible image. Only vehicles equipped with a surround-view camera are included in the recall.

The problem occurs when water leaks into the rear camera, which can cause the rear camera to go blurry or not show an image at all. If this happens, drivers may not be able to see pedestrians or obstacles behind the vehicle. In addition, the SUVs would no longer be in compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Land Rover dealerships will replace a seal to prevent water intrusion and, if necessary, replace the backup camera. As with all recalls, this repair will be free of charge. Owners who have already paid to fix this problem may be eligible for reimbursement from the automaker.

There have been no crashes or injuries related to this issue, according to documents Land Rover provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Tesla recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles because Software Glitch can cause backup camera to go dark

Tesla recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles because software glitch can cause backup camera to go dark. Tesla is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles in the US because the backup camera may not function while the car is in reverse. The recall covers certain Models Y, S and X from the 2023 model year. All are equipped with “Full Self-Driving” computer 4.0 and run software version 2023.44.30 through 2023.44.30.6 or 2023.44.100.

The company says in documents posted by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that software instability may prevent the camera image from showing images while the Teslas are in reverse. The safety agency says that can increase the risk of a crash.

Tesla says in documents that it is not aware of any crashes or injuries. Documents say the problem has been fixed with an online software update. Owners will be notified by letter starting March 22.

Tesla said in documents that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths related to the issue. Tesla began getting complaints about the problem in late December and decided to do a recall on January 12, documents say. As of January 22, the company had 81 warranty claims potentially related to the problem.

Teslas cannot drive themselves despite having a “Full Self-Driving” system, and human drivers have to be ready to intervene at all times.
