Tyre Upgrade - questions

Hi Guys,

Right now, I'm running on 175/70-R13 tyres. I'm thinking of upgrading to 185/60-R14 with alloy wheels.
I've the comparison chart here :

Please let me know what will be the effect on the following(remember i'm going from steel to alloys)

1. Handling
2. Pick-up(From standstill in 1st gear)
3. Acceleration(In any gear)
4. Mileage
5. Top-speed
6. Braking

175to 185 will contribute little benefits.

rubber thickness has reduced and width increased

so expect better handelling and braking.

acceleration and top speed will reduce

mileage will reduce

the drive comfort will reduce.

better looks.

but need to see the manufacturer and type of tire also

as there are many kind of tires with soft rubber hard rubber, noisy rubber, low noise rubber, high speed rubber, least resistance rubber et al. so it is not only the figure but overall type which need to considered.and each ones contribute into particular field of of its kind

Which tires are you going for? The handling differs among the brands.
However your upgrade from Steel wheels to lighter alloy wheels will definitely improve the fuel efficiency by 1-2kmpl.
And ofcourse with increased width, you will feel improvement in handling than before.
Do post more about the details of the shoes which you are planning to go for!

Wont over sizing show incorrect readings?

1. Handling- Will increase definitely
2. Pick-up(From standstill in 1st gear)- It will reduce slightly but you will not be able to notice it at all
3. Acceleration(In any gear)-Same as before
4. Mileage- May increase slightly
5. Top-speed No idea!
6. Braking- It will improve i guess as more tyre is now in contact with the road.


As Jayadev mentioned everything depends on the tyres you choose.


@ Marun There is only a small difference of 0.4% , so the error will be minimal.

Thank you for the inputs.
I really don't know about these different kind of rubbers. I'm planning to go to a tyre shop and get quotations. I'm not planning this in near future but would surely do sometime.

One more question.

Does one need to change the suspension setting while up-sizing or down-sizing the tyre size?
