Any news on whether an Automatic variant is in the works?

Nothing confirmed so far. However, we can very well expect such a move in the future. considering the auto gear trend picking up momentum (though very slowly), I feel the future is promising.

At least before a year, I highly doubt about the plans for anything like that.
