Built by the Portuguese in 1505, it was elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558. It was used by the British in the 18th century and was destroyed in 1795. It was rebuilt in 1905 and was proclaimed a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
