Thanks

Great Photos with awsesome writeup.
Awiting for remaining part of the story.
Thanks again.

Excellent Pics with detailed write-up.

Will plan those areas in near future[;)]
Thanks, AppU. You could have done it in your last trip if you had more time....

Continued on the ICT road which bypassed Ernakulam and joins the highway near Kalamassery.

Followed the google navigation and just before Kodanad, stopped at a hotel and had a good filling breakfast.

Continued on that road till reached the end of motor-able road. From there walked down some short distance to the Paniyeli Poru, a place in Periyar river with Malayatoor on one bank and Paniyeli on the other. The distance between the banks is very short and is filled with smooth large rocks.

It is very tempting to cross this river at this point as it looks harmless. But the river has very strong under current and 5 NCC cadets lost their life near this point last month.

After soaking in the beauty and wading in the shallow water we left for the Elephant camp in kodanad. There we saw how cruelly the Elephants were treated. There were no officials around, so we could not get any explanation as to why they were treated that way.

This baby Elephant had been hurt badly and could hardly stand. It is using its trunk to support its weight. It took this baby a 10 minutes struggle to sit on the sack behind it....

And this Baby tied to the post was making weird noise ...

Now turning towards us in anger....

And the reason..... These are chained in such a way that they cannot move... The one in the middle was just shaking its head up and down all the time we were there.

Left this place with a heavy heart. [sad] Wish we hadn't visited this place...

Hi HR, if you informed , we could have a meet at Kodanadu. It was just 10 km from My home.
Hey, Releesh. It never crossed my mind, honestly.[embarass] It would have been nice to have met you in person. After all you suggested these places...

Ah !! wonderful Travelogue buddy to the "Gods own country" !! one of my favorite place.

The pics are superb with short narration, I really appreciate for your interest and effort here.

Felt so sad looking at those elephants and get angry too why man try to lock animals for his pleasure or work ?? just think of that elephant you have spotted alone near a river and compare these baby elephants with them, its really cruel and I feel the one who lock them and beat them are the real animals by nature(sorry it is my personal opinion)

After a couple of cruises in the backwaters, even my 75 year old M-I-L said "This place is blessed by God"

+1
That night, the elephants were still on my mind. We were all upset and were cursing why we went there.....

In Kerala elephants are used as cranes to load logs on to lorries. In fact we saw this happening in one house where they had cut some huge trees and an elephant was being used to load it on to the lorry. The lorry was blocking the road and I had to get out and talk with the driver. I wanted to take some snaps, but the lady of the house was looking at me suspiciously. She even asked me what I was doing in those part of the country as she had not seen me before.

We also visited Abhayaranyam, a shelter for orphaned wildlife which is very close to the Elephant Kraal. They are just improving the infrastructure there, I think to make it into a kind of zoo. Right now there about a dozen of Spotted Deer and a dozen or so of Sambar Deer.

The entrance with three ticket counters. Still not functional. At present it is free entry.

We then went around the Periyar river to the Malayatoor Church. The old church was closed and some side support walls were already demolished. They have built a big church next to it.

Later we left for Mahagany thottom. The road was in a bad shape. Just as we were nearing the place, an old man on a cycle stopped us and told us that the place was closed due the resent tragedy. So we turned back to Fort Kochi.

Vintage Inn, Fort Kochi looks elegant in white. Room rent also seems reasonable. You mentioned room was spacious. What about Service and cleanliness?

From the pictures it seems, parking will be an issue. Or do they have parking space inside the premises?
