Porsche recalling roughly 27,000 Taycan EVs with Short-Circuit risk

Audi and Porsche are recalling a combined 34,026 electric vehicles with concerns that a short circuit within the high-voltage battery system may lead to a fire. In the case of Porsche, the recall covers 27,527 Taycan electric sedans spanning from the 2020-2024 model years while Audi's recall covers 6499 e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT models from 2022 through 2024.

Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that certain models covered in the recall may experience a short circuit within the battery modules, which could lead to a fire. According to NHTSA, analysis shows that issues with supplier production for the high-voltage modules may lead to short circuits. NHTSA also stated that there are no warnings to indicate drivers of the issue.

The remedy involves multiple steps, including asking some of the affected owners not to charge their vehicles above 80 percent charge until onboard diagnostic software can be installed. All owners will be asked to bring their vehicle to a Porsche dealer that will inspect the battery modules and install a new advanced diagnostic software as the final remedy. If the inspection shows anomalies in the battery system, the automaker will replace the modules free of charge. If the updated software detects an anomaly, it will display a warning message on the dashboard and limit the charging capacity of the battery.

Porsche dealer notification letters are scheduled for October 16, with owner notification letters to follow on November 29. NHTSA documents show that Taycans produced after April 3, 2024, are not subject to the recall because of countermeasures enacted during production. Audi cell modules produced after May 27,2023, are also exempt. Owners concerned their vehicle may be included can check on the NHTSA recalls website.

Honda recalls 1.7 million cars with potential Steering Rack issue

Honda issued a widespread recall that covers 1,693,199 million vehicles that may have an issue within the steering rack. The recall covers the Acura Integra and Integra Type S, the Honda CR-V, the Honda HR-V, and the entire Civic lineup. The affected model years span from 2023 to 2025, with the base Civic's 2022 model year also included.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, the problem stems from an improperly produced steering gearbox worm wheel.

The worm wheel, which controls steering in the car, may have been produced incorrectly and consequently swell while the vehicle is in use. According to NHTSA, the swelling wheel thins the film of grease between the worm wheel and worm gear, causing friction and increasing steering effort. NHTSA also states that the preload of the worm gear spring was set too high, which results in higher friction and fluctuating torque when steering. The recall documents describe warning signs as an abnormal noise or "sticky" feeling when turning the wheel.

Honda has already notified dealers of the recall and plans to send owner notification letters on November 18, 2024. Affected owners will be asked to set up an appointment with their local Honda dealer, which will inspect the car and replace the worm gear spring with an improved part and redistribute or add grease. Owners concerned whether their vehicle may be included can check on the NHTSA recalls site.

2023–2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid recalled for Brake issue

Toyota's 2023 and 2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid are under recall for a problem with a brake component. The problem affects 42,199 of the subcompact SUVs, although not all of the recalled vehicles were sold in the U.S., according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the recall report, there is a software error in the skid-control electronic control unit (ECU) that controls the vehicle's brake systems. This could cause the power brake assist to be lost while the vehicle is turning a corner, and the driver would experience "a hard brake pedal with reduced braking force."

The affected vehicles have a Bosch-supplied brake actuator assembly. NHTSA documents say that other U.S.-market Toyota and Lexus vehicles don't have the same assembly design, so they are not expected to be added to the recall.

Toyota will update the skid-control ECU at no charge. Notification letters will be sent by November 19, and in the meantime, Corolla Cross Hybrid owners can check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is impacted.

More than 40,000 Nissan cars recalled for separate rear-view camera issues

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued recall notices for more than 40,000 Nissan vehicles due to a malfunction that causes the loss of the rearview camera image when the vehicles are in reverse.

Two separate recall notices were issued on Oct. 3.

The first, for 37,236 Nissan Rogue and Infinity QZ80 vehicles, is due to a software error that "may cause the rearview camera to display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse."

The second, for an additional 3,230 Infinity QX80 with a Around View Mirror system installed, is also due to a software error that "may cause the rearview camera to freeze and display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse."

The NHTSA noted that "the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

The Hyundai Nexo is being recalled over Hydrogen Gas leaks

The recall affects the Hyundai Nexo from the 2019 to 2024 model years, amounting to 1545 vehicles in total. That may not seem like a lot of cars, but given that Hyundai began selling the Nexo in the United States in 2019 and only moves a few hundred units each year, that number accounts for virtually every example of the hydrogen fuel-cell SUV on the road. The NHTSA documents state that only about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles are expected to have the defect, however.

The issue stems from the Thermally-activated Pressure Relief Device (TPRD), which is supposed to vent hydrogen gas to the atmosphere if the hydrogen fuel tanks overheat to avoid over-pressurization of the tanks. The TPRD features a glass bulb that is designed to fracture if a specific temperature is reached, releasing the hydrogen gas and thus maintaining a safe pressure for the fuel tanks.

According to the NHTSA documents, however, micro-cracks in the glass can cause the bulb to break before the required temperature is reached, instead emitting hydrogen gas during normal vehicle operation. NHTSA notes that if the gas is released within the presence of an ignition source, there is a risk for a fire.

If the bulb breaks, a white cloud will appear at the rear of the Nexo, and drivers will hear a loud wind-like noise. The fuel gauge will also quickly deplete and a malfunction light will illuminate on the gauge cluster.

Hyundai's fix will be to replace the glass bulb with a metal TPRD, and the new unit started being installed on new Nexos starting on May 21, 2024. Hyundai says that Nexo owners can continue driving their SUVs until the TPRD has been replaced, but recommends parking away from buildings and other structures. Hyundai will notify all affected owners via mail on December 10 and will fix the TPRD for free. Before then, Nexo owners can check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is impacted

Honda recalls more than 700,000 cars for fuel leak issue

Honda has initiated its second major vehicle recall this month, this time for over 700,000 vehicles that may experience a fuel leak due to a cracked pump.

Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall last week for certain Honda Accord, Civic and Hybrid models, totaling 720,810 potentially impacted cars.

According to the notice, the faulty production of high-pressure fuel pumps resulted in cracks that can worsen when the pump is functioning. This can cause fuel leaks and lead to an increased risk of injury, warned NHTSA.

According to the recall information sent to NHTSA from Honda, the high-pressure fuel pump in affected vehicles may crack and leak fuel.

The issue was caused by improper production of high-pressure fuel pumps, said Honda. As a result, a crack can form in the core component of the fuel pump, causing a leak. A fuel leak that occurs near an ignition source increases the risk of fire, crash and/or injury.

In some cases, the odor of gas while vehicles were driven or idling was reported. Dealers will inspect and replace the high-pressure fuel pump as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on December 4, 2024.

Ram 1500 Classic Heated Trailer Tow Mirror Glass may detach

Nearly 32,000 Ram 1500 Classic trucks are recalled if they are equipped with heated trailer tow rearview mirrors.

The recalled 2020-2023 Ram 1500 Classic trucks have mirror glass that may detach from the driver's side heated trailer tow rearview mirrors.

Federal regulations require trucks to be equipped with outside driver-side rearview mirrors that have a reflective surface, but the truck mirror glass may not properly stick to the backing plates. This means the driver's side heated trailer tow rearview mirror glass may detach.

In July 2023, Chrysler learned about Ram 1500 Classic trucks with mirror glass that detached. Ford expects to mail mirror recall letters December 5, 2024, and dealers will replace the mirror glass.

Ram 1500 Classic owners may contact FCA at 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number 86B.

Ford recalls 6,212 Mustangs for instrument panel failure

Ford Motor Company is recalling 6,212 2024 Mustang vehicles. The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) may not illuminate at startup or while driving.

When this happens, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 102, "Transmission shift lever sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect."

An instrument panel display that does not show critical information, such as warning lights or vehicle speed, increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the instrument panel cluster software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by November 11, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24C35.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to nhtsa.gov.

Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango recalled for ABS problem

Problems with anti-lock brake system modules have convinced Fiat Chrysler to recall more than 206,000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.

The recall involves 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2018-2019 Dodge Durango vehicles equipped with faulty ABS modules that can disable the ABS and electronic stability control.

In addition, it may be possible to start the vehicle and shift out of PARK without applying the brake pedal. Finally, the ABS module may cause problems with the brake lights.

Chrysler recalled the vehicles in June 2022 for the same problems, so owners will need to return to dealerships for repairs. However, FCA is still working on how the problems will be repaired.

According to Chrysler, a driver should know of a problem if warning lights activate when the vehicle is started. In addition, a driver may notice the brake lights remaining on after shutting down the vehicle.

All total, FCA has received 533 warranty claims about the ABS modules, but there have been no crash or injury reports. Chrysler will mail recall letters December 5, 2024, but concerned owners may call the automaker at 800-853-1403 and ask about recall number 94B.

General Motors recalls nearly 80,000 over transmission safety issue

General Motors (GM) is recalling nearly 80,000 vehicles due to a safety issue with the transmission.

The recall involves some 2022-2023 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

There are 54,722 Chevrolet Express vehicles affected by the recall and 23,102 GMC Savana vehicles affected by it.

Incorrect software in the transmission control module may result in reduced power, unintended deceleration, rear-wheel lockup, or cause the vehicle to move in an unintended direction, the NHTSA said.

If the rear wheels lock up momentarily while driving or the vehicle moves in an unintended direction at low speeds, the vehicle regulator reported, there is increased risk of a crash.

Toyota recalls certain 2023 and 2024 Toyota Corolla vehicles

Toyota is conducting a safety recall involving certain Corolla vehicles produced from July 2023 to September 2023. Approximately 8,000 vehicles in the U.S. are involved in this recall.

A part of the steering shaft, which allows the steering wheel to control the direction of the front wheels, may have been manufactured with cracks. If the cracks grow over time, this part of the steering shaft can separate and can lead to a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will replace the steering intermediate shaft with a new one, free of charge.

Customers will be notified about this issue through the mail by late January 2025.

Information about automotive recalls, including but not limited to the list of involved vehicles, is current as of today’s filing date and is subject to change thereafter. To see if your vehicle is involved in a safety recall visit Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate information.
