Honda recall: Over 187,000 Honda Ridgeline trucks recalled over rearview camera issue

America Honda Motor Co. is recalling over 187,000 vehicles in certain Ridgeline models due to an issue with the rearview camera.

According to the recall notice reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 9 and posted Monday, Honda is recalling 187,290 of certain 2020-2024 Ridgeline pickup trucks because the rearview camera (RVC) tailgate wire harness may fatigue and break, which can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying and increase the risk of crash.

Honda dealers will replace the RVC tailgate wire harness, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 1.

Ford recalls hybrids over software issue putting them into neutral unexpectedly

Ford is recalling nearly 9,000 hybrid vehicles to address a software issue that could cause the drivetrain to shift into neutral unexpectedly.

Affected vehicles include 8,369 Maverick hybrid pickup trucks from model years 2022-2024, as well as 277 Escape crossovers from model years 2020-2022 and 81 Lincoln Corsair plug-in hybrid crossovers from model years 2021 and 2022. All three models share a basic platform and many major components.

In these vehicles, the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) may errantly shift the drivetrain into neutral, keeping the vehicle on but cutting drive power to the wheels, according to the NHTSA. In this condition, the vehicle will coast to a stop and automatically shift into park. Once shifted back into drive, vehicles will enter a limp home mode that limits power.

Dealers will install updated HPCM software free of charge. Ford plans to begin notifying owners of when to schedule an appointment for this service later this month.

BMW recall for seatbelt malfunction

BMW is recalling 3,256 of its 2024 and 2025 vehicles. In the NHTSA report, the luxury manufacturer said the seat belt system may not detect that the passengers in the vehicle are belted. As a result, the seat beat warning light will not illuminate and can cause the supplemental restraint system (SRS) to not deploy properly during a crash. When a seat belt warning light does not alert the driver that their passengers are unbelted or the SRS system fails to deploy, it can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," the NHTSA report said.

To resolve this issue, dealers will inspect and replace the front seat lower seat belts as necessary. All services will be completely for free. Notification letters are expected to be sent on July 5.

Recalled BMW vehicles:
  • 2024 XM
  • 2025 X5 sDrive40i
  • 2025 X5 xDrive40i
  • 2025 X5 M60i
  • 2025 X5 M
  • 2025 X5 xDrive50e
  • 2025 X6 xDrive40i
  • 2025 X6 M60i
  • 2025 X6 M
  • 2025 X7 xDrive40i

Volkswagen recalls 79,000 ID.4 EVs over Instrument Panel display issue

Volkswagen is recalling more than 79,000 examples of its ID.4 electric SUV over a software issue that may affect the vehicles’ instrument panel display.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-23 ID.4 electric SUVs. The software issue may cause the instrument panel to spontaneously reset or not boot at all, resulting in a loss of the speedometer information or rearview camera image and increasing the risk of a crash.

To resolve the issue, dealers will update the vehicle software for free. Volkswagen will notify owners July 12, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-893-5298 (Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 919A), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.

Mazda recalls 2024 CX-90 for Braking Issue

Mazda North American Operations has issued a recall for certain 2024 CX-90 vehicles due to a critical braking issue. The automatic braking system may activate unexpectedly, posing a significant risk of a crash. This article provides detailed insights into the recall, including the affected units, the nature of the defect, and the planned remedy.

  • Recall Number: 24V349000
  • Affected Units: 9,914 vehicles
  • Issue: Sudden activation of brakes due to false object detection
  • Remedy: Free reprogramming of the vehicle control module (VCM)
  • Notification Date: Owner notification letters will be mailed by July 17, 2024
Mazda is recalling certain 2024 CX-90 vehicles due to an issue with the automatic braking system. The defect causes the brakes to activate suddenly, falsely detecting certain objects while driving. This issue increases the risk of a crash, especially in low-speed situations (10-15 MPH).

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued this recall under campaign number 24V349000. Mazda has identified that the problem originates from improper programming of the Vehicle Control Module (VCM). The automatic braking system may mistakenly identify a vehicle’s reflection or other objects as an approaching obstacle, leading to sudden braking.

Mazda dealers will reprogram the VCM with updated software to address the issue. This service will be provided free of charge. Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification letters by July 17, 2024.

Kia Niro EV recall: Safety Plug Hazard

Kia America, Inc. has announced a recall for specific 2022 Niro EV vehicles. The problem arises from the high voltage battery safety plug which may overheat and melt. This can lead to a loss of drive power or even a fire, significantly increasing the risk of an accident and potential injuries.

Owners are advised not to charge their vehicle in a garage or any other covered structure until the recall repair is completed. Kia dealers will replace the safety plug free of charge. The owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by July 19, 2024. For reference, Kia’s number for this recall is SC314.

The root cause is suspected to be a supplier deviation in the manufacturing of the Female-Female (F-F) terminal. If this high electrical resistance occurs while driving or during battery charging, the safety plug may melt, thereby increasing the risk of loss of motive power and/or fire. Warning signs include the illumination of the EV Service Warning light, smell of melting plastics, and/or smoke.

Owners will receive a notification by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicle to a Kia dealer. The dealers will replace the safety plug with a new one. The new safety plug has a solid bus bar connection with no Female-Female terminal, eliminating the defect. Owners will be reimbursed for any repair expenses already incurred under Kia’s General Reimbursement Plan filed on May 1, 2024.

Vehicles manufactured beginning on December 3, 2021, are equipped with safety plugs without any supplier manufacturing deviations in the Female-Female terminal.

Nissan issues urgent warning over exploding Takata airbag inflators on 84,000 older vehicles

Nissan is urging the owners of about 84,000 older vehicles to stop driving them because their Takata air bag inflators have an increased risk of exploding in a crash and hurling dangerous metal fragments.

Wednesday's urgent request comes after one person in a Nissan was killed by an exploding front-passenger inflator, and as many as 58 people were injured since 2015.

"Due to the age of the vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators, there is an increased risk the inflator could explode during an airbag deployment, propelling sharp metal fragments which can cause serious injury or death," Nissan said in a statement.

Nissan said the "do not drive" warning covers certain 2002 through 2006 Sentra small cars, as well as some 2002 through 2004 Pathfinder SUVs, and 2002 and 2003 Infiniti QX4 SUVs. Owners can find out if their vehicles are affected by going to nissanusa.com/takata-airbag-recall or infinitiusa.com/takata-airbag-recall and keying in their 17-digit vehicle identification number.

The company says owners should contact their dealer to set up an appointment to have inflators replaced for free. Nissan also is offering free towing to dealers, and in some locations mobile service and loaner cars are available.

"Even minor crashes can result in exploding Takata airbags that can kill or produce life-altering, gruesome injuries," the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement. "Older model year vehicles put their occupants at higher risk, as the age of the airbag is one of the contributing factors."

Nissan originally recalled 736,422 of the vehicles in 2020 to replace the Takata inflators. The company said around 84,000 remain unrepaired and are believed to still be in use.

Nissan said it has made numerous attempts to reach the owners with unrepaired Takata inflators. The death was reported to NHTSA in 2018, the company said. The person killed was in a 2006 Sentra, according to Nissan.

The death is one of 27 in the U.S. caused by the faulty inflators, which used volatile ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate airbags in a crash. The chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. It can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel. More than 400 people in the U.S. have been hurt.

Worldwide at least 35 people have been killed by Takata inflators in Malaysia, Australia and the U.S.

Potential for a dangerous malfunction led to the largest series of auto recalls in U.S. history, with at least 67 million Takata inflators involved. The U.S. government says many have not been repaired. About 100 million inflators have been recalled worldwide. The exploding airbags sent Takata into bankruptcy.

102,000 Toyota Tundras, Lexus LX recalled for Faulty Engines

Toyota is recalling approximately 102,000 examples of its Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX (Lexus is Toyota’s luxury brand) for potentially faulty engines that can cause a possible loss of motive power.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2022-23 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks and Lexus LX SUVs. Machining debris potentially left in the engine during production can result in engine knocking, rough running or no start; there is also the risk of a potential loss in motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota is currently developing a remedy for this issue. The automaker will notify owners by late July, but in the meantime, owners can contact Toyota at 800-331-4331, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.

2018 – 2022 Range Rover Sport recalled over water ingress into Rearview Camera

Jaguar Land Rover North America has issued a recall affecting 22,268 units of the 2018 to 2022 model year Land Rover Range Rover Sport. According to the British automaker, said recall comprises Range Rover Sport utility vehicles equipped with the surround camera system.

Supplied by Frankfurt-based Continental Teves AG & Co. OHG, the rearview camera fitted to these sport utility vehicles may fail due to water ingress. Jaguar Land Rover became aware of this problem in December 2022. The Recall Determination Committee decided on a recall in January 2024, which comprised 58,729 examples of the 2018 to 2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

Following a post-campaign review, Jaguar Land Rover North America determined that a number of Range Rover Sport vehicles had been incorrectly repaired. More specifically, dealer service technicians followed Range Rover instead of Range Rover Sport instructions. Given the aforementioned, the manufacturer has recalled the entire RRS population from the first recall.

JPLA-19H422-AB is the part number of the rear-facing camera. Dealers are to remove and inspect said camera. If everything seems fine, it will be fitted with a new seal. In case of water ingress or failure, a new rearview camera and a new camera housing seal will be fitted. Service technicians also have to perform a 10-minute calibration drive cycle to make sure that everything works as intended.

The 22,268 recalled vehicles were manufactured at JLR's Solihull plant in the United Kingdom between May 26, 2017 and April 28, 2022. According to Jaguar Land Rover North America, the automaker received 95 reports relating to this problem in the US between January 30, 2018 and May 16, 2024.

Tesla recalling more than 125,000 vehicles to fix seat belt warning system

Tesla is recalling more than 125,000 vehicles to fix a seat belt warning system that may increase the risk of an injury in a collision.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the recall includes certain 2012-2024 Model S, 2015-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles.

The seat belt warning system is supposed to provide audible and visual seat belt reminder signals to drivers to alert them that their seat belt isn't fastened. The NHTSA said that on certain vehicles, the audible and visual seat belt reminder signals were not going off at the time they were supposed to, which doesn't comply with federal safety requirements.

The NHTSA said that as of Tuesday, Tesla had identified 104 warranty claims that may be related to the condition. The company isn't aware of any collisions, fatalities or injuries that may be related to the condition.

Lincoln Aviators are recalled to fix Backup Camera

Lincoln is recalling more than 109,000 Aviator SUVs from the 2020 through 2024 model years because their backup camera may flicker or show a distorted image due to electromagnetic interference from a cell phone.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Lincoln says that owners should not use their phone while the vehicle is in Reverse until a dealership can complete a free recall fix by installing additional shielding on an important electronic component inside the vehicle.

The problem is at its worst when the phone is in use, has low signal strength, and is stored in the vehicle’s console or cup holders, the automaker says.

Lincoln says it’s aware of more than 478 complaints from owners about flickering and distorted backup camera images in addition to a single report of minor property damage that’s potentially related to the problem.

This is the latest in a series of recalls involving the Aviator’s backup camera.

Lincoln Aviator Backup Camera Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Lincoln Aviator SUVs manufactured between Oct. 19, 2018, and April 25, 2024.

The problem: The vehicle’s Accessory Protocol Image Module (APIM) may be susceptible to electromagnetic interference from cell phones. This could cause the image to flicker or not display properly.

The fix: Lincoln dealerships will add additional electromagnetic shielding to the APIM, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Lincoln at 866-436-7332.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V368. Lincoln’s own number for this recall is 24S35.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.

Mercedes-Benz recalls EQE and EQS for Battery Management System Software issue

Mercedes-Benz USA has recalled nearly 15,000 examples of the EQE, EQE SUV, EQS, and EQS SUV for a deviation in the battery management system software development process. The iffy software causes the high-voltage battery to shut down, resulting in reduced or a loss of propulsion.

Affected vehicles were produced for the 2023 through 2025 model years at the Bremen, Sindelfingen, and Tuscaloosa plants in Germany and the United States of America. The manufacturer started looking into this problem in late 2023, following two reports from Denmark and the US.

The report from Denmark alleged a battery management system warning message in the vehicle's instrument cluster, with said warning message appearing prior to delivery to the customer. The report from the United States market, on the other hand, alleged reduced drive power and the same warning message as previously mentioned.

From the very beginning, Mercedes-Benz AG hypothesized that something may be off with the battery management system software. Further analyses revealed that the battery control module's memory can be overloaded by the volume of diagnostic requests from the other control units.

A high volume of requests would force the battery control module to reset. Data overflow to the battery management system would result in reduced power output or a loss of propulsion, conditions that increase the risk of a crash. Merc does highlight that the vehicle can be restarted once it comes to a complete stop. Prior to filing the recall documentation with the NHTSA, the automaker was aware of 17 reports related to this defect in the US.

Thankfully for the German automaker's legal department, there are no reports of injuries or worse. The attached recall report lists no fewer than 14 different software versions for the battery management system, as well as model versions ranging from the lowly 350 series all the way to the AMG EQS 53 and Maybach EQS SUV 680.

Honda recalls Old HR-V and Fit for inoperative Rearview Camera display

A Honda backup camera recall has been issued a second time for Honda Fit and Honda HR-V vehicles.

The backup camera recall involves more than 114,000 model year 2018-2020 Honda Fit and 2019-2022 Honda HR-V vehicles because the rearview camera images may not display when the engines are started with keys. Honda says the backup camera image failure is due to a design error in the audio display power circuit.

The Honda Fit and Honda HR-V vehicles were recalled in 2023 for the same camera image problems and were supposed to be repaired with software updates. But Honda says the vehicles still have backup camera image problems.

Honda originally recalled the vehicles after receiving 205 warranty claims between March 20, 2018, and January 6, 2023, but no reports of injuries or deaths.

Following the initial backup camera recall, and as of May 23, 2024, Honda received 92 rearview camera image warranty claims between February 10, 2023, and April 27, 2024.

Honda owners who had to take their vehicles to dealers due to the February 2023 backup camera recall will need to head back to dealerships again. Honda backup camera recall letters should be mailed July 8, 2024, and dealers will update the display audio unit software.

Ford recalls 2024 Mustang manual models over potential Fire Risk

Ford has recalled 2024 Mustangs that may lose power and catch fire, something that has occurred twice. More than 8,000 model year 2024 Ford Mustangs are recalled because the clutch pressure lines may not be connected to the firewall studs.

According to Ford, a clutch pressure line not properly retained may contact hot exhaust components, melt and leak brake fluid. A leaking clutch pressure line won't affect brake function, but the clutch system will have problems with the supply of brake fluid and cause problems with shifting gears.

The Mustang engine may stall, or underhood smoke and fire is possible if brake fluid makes contact with hot surfaces. Ford blames the problem on missing or improperly installed barrel nuts which retain the clutch pressure lines to the firewall studs.

Ford learned of two underhood fire reports on 2024 Ford Mustangs equipped with manual transmissions. As of May 24, Ford is aware of the two Mustang fire reports and one allegation of underhood smoke, but there have been no crash or injury reports.

Ford Mustang clutch pressure line recall letters will be mailed June 17, 2024, then dealers will repair the clutch

Chrysler recalls more than 211,000 vehicles for glitch in safety software

Fiat Chrysler has recalled more than 211,000 Dodge Durango SUVs and Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks because of electronic stability control problems.

The recalled 2022 Dodge Durango, 2022 Ram 2500 and 2022 Ram 3500 vehicles are equipped with antilock braking system modules that may disable the electronic stability control systems.

Federal safety standards require electronic stability control to function the entire time the vehicle is moving, including during braking. A driver may know of the problem if a warning light activates during start-up.

FCA learned of the problem in March 2023 when it began looking at warranty data, field reports and customer complaints. Chrysler expects to mail ABS module recall letters July 26, 2024, and dealerships will update the ABS control module software.
