Hyundai joins Kia in another recall to prevent engine fires

DETROIT (AP) — Hyundai is joining affiliated automaker Kia in yet another U.S. recall for problems that could cause engine fires.

Hyundai said Wednesday that it’s recalling nearly 207,000 Sonata midsize cars from 2013 and 2014 because a hose that connects one fuel pump to another can develop cracks, leak fuel and potentially cause a fire.

The South Korean automaker is still developing a fix. It expects to begin the recall on April 24.

The recall is the latest in a litany of problems that can cause engines to burn in models made by Kia and Hyundai. Past problems have triggered investigations by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Hyundai said in documents filed with the government that it has seen a spike in claims of fuel leaks on 2013 Sonatas. But it has no reports of fires, smoking, burning or melting parts, the documents said.

Last month Kia said it would recall over 142,000 Optima midsize cars for the same fuel hose problem. Kia said it has eight reports of fuel leaks in Optimas.

Earlier in February Kia recalled nearly 229,000 older Sedonas and Sorento SUVs because moisture can get into the antilock brake control computers, causing an electrical short and possibly an engine fire. Hyundai recalled nearly 430,000 older Elantra small cars due to the same problem.

Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler Recalled for Clutch Problem

jp020-217glgn2e1abnr3tknfq41g9phm6nr0-1583960124.jpg?crop=0.460xw:0.460xh;0.0865xw,0.jpg

More than 33,000 of Jeep's popular Wrangler and Gladiator are being recalled to fix a problem with the clutch pressure plate. The recall involves 2018 through 2020 Wrangler SUVs and 2020 Gladiators with manual transmissions built between August 23, 2017, and February 13, 2020. Included are 29,818 Wranglers and 3419 Gladiators.

A report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the clutch pressure plate could become overheated from friction, which could cause the pressure plate to fracture, which in turn could crack or fracture the transmission case. If that happened, heated "debris" could contact ignition sources and cause a fire. The fractured pressure plate could also cause "a loss of propulsion" or drivability, according to the NHTSA document.

2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Recalled In The US To Fix Internal Door Handle

Automobili Lamborghini has issued a recall in the United States for 26 units of the 2020 Aventador SVJ. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration document, the Italian marque has issued the recall to fix a potential problem with the internal door handle mechanism. There is a potential risk where one can open the car door from the outside but might not be able to open it from inside. In an emergency, not being able to leave the vehicle puts the occupants of the supercar in potential danger.

Ford Recalls 250,000 Fiesta, Fusion, Lincoln MKZ Cars for Faulty Door Latch

  • Ford has issued a recall for 248,912 vehicles in the U.S. over faulty door latches.
  • The recall covers three sedans: the Ford Fiesta and Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ.
  • The automaker will notify owners of the recall by May 4. Until then, owners can check the NHTSA recall site to see if their vehicle is affected.
Ford has issued a recall for nearly 250,000 vehicles in the U.S. and nearly 20,000 in Mexico for a door latch problem. The problem is with the latch pawl's spring-tab design. It can degrade in high temperatures and thus will not be secured when the door is shut. Ford says that even if an owner gets the door to latch after repeated attempts, it is still possible that it will become unlatched during driving. The recall includes three Ford sedans: the 2014–2015 Ford Fiesta, the 2014–2016 Ford Fusion, and the 2014–2016 Lincoln MKZ.

Ford Recalls Nearly 68,000 2020 F-150s, Rangers, and Expeditions

2020-ford-f-150-mmp-1-1565730299.jpg?crop=0.774xw:0.654xh;0.123xw,0.jpg

Ford has issued a recall for nearly 68,000 2020 vehicles, including the F-150, the Ranger, and the Expedition with police package, built in February or March of this year and equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission. In the U.S. there are 55,158 of the recalled vehicles, 12,090 in Canada, and 681 in Mexico. The problem does not affect vehicles that have a rotary-dial gearshifter.

The issue prompting the recall is a clip meant to keep the gearshift cable and transmission connected to each other, which may not be properly seated. As a result, the transmission can be in a different gear than the one the driver has selected, so it's possible for the driver to put the shifter in park but the transmission to remain in drive. Even after the vehicle is turned off, if this happens, the vehicle can still freely move if the parking brake is not applied.

Toyota recalls 2020 Corolla hatch due to faulty reverse light wiring

pllijf6pfawa36syjuf4.jpg

Toyota Australia has issued a recall of 780 of its model-year 2020 Corolla hatch petrol (MZEA12 model code) and hybrid (ZWE211 model code) cars due to faulty reverse light wiring.

Toyota lists 661 of the vehicles as being sold between 5-12 December 2019, while the other 119 remain in dealer stock.

The defect relates to electrical components in the rear hatch that may be susceptible to corrosion resulting in reduced lamp function in the reversing lights.

Toyota reports that if the reversing lights don't operate as intended there could be an increased risk of a collision.

2020 Hyundai Sonata, Nexo Recalled for Smart Park System Malfunction

screen-shot-2020-01-29-at-11-30-32-am-1580315498.png?crop=0.png

Hyundai has announced it is recalling 11,870 of its 2020 Sonata and Nexo vehicles to reprogram the software that runs its Remote Smart Parking Assist technology, a.k.a. "smart park." The tech allows the vehicle to park itself, even in tight spaces, without a driver sitting at the wheel. It can be controlled by pushing a button inside the car before exiting or using a remote-control function on the key fob. According to the recall notice, the feature may allow the vehicle to move without having been told to do so, which could cause a crash.

NHTSA describes the problem as an error in the software programming that could "cause the vehicle to continue to move in its last commanded direction even while a system malfunction is detected."

2020 Ford Expedition Recalled for Malfunctioning Seatbelt Sensor

2020-ford-expedition-mmp-2-1570047432.jpg?crop=0.968xw:0.879xh;0.0272xw,0.jpg

Ford has issued a recall for 1368 2020 Expedition SUVs due to a defective tension sensor in the front passenger seatbelt buckle, which could lead to an incorrect measurement of the weight and size of the passenger for the car's restraint system and keep the airbag light from being illuminated.

A Ford spokesperson told Car and Driver that the problem "could result in the airbag not deploying in the event of a crash." No accidents or injuries have been reported, however.

Subaru Recalls 188,000 2019 Vehicles over Risk of Engine Stalling

2019-subaru-ascent-lt10k-104-1556725216.jpg?crop=1.00xw:0.922xh;0,0.jpg

Subaru issued a recall for 188,207 of its 2019 vehicles, including the Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, and Outback, due to a fuel pump which could fail, leading to the engine stalling, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). When the problem occurs, there is an increased risk of crashing while the vehicle is in motion as the problem leaves the vehicle unable to restart.

Subaru said that it is unaware of any crashes or injuries that have resulted from the issue and added that it seems like the issue appears with an engine not starting, rather than stalling when in motion. The automaker will start notifying owners on June 5 of the recall, and affected vehicles will have the fuel pumps replaced by dealers.

Volvo Australia recalls 9205 cars over autonomous emergency braking issue

lkgvalcbxgh9fkr7wb92.jpg

Volvo Australia has issued a recall of 9205 of its cars due to software issue may mean the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system does not deploy properly in the event of cyclist or pedestrian detection.

The affected cars are model-year 2019-2020 S60 sedan, V60 and V90 Cross Country wagons, and XC40 (pictured above), XC60 and XC90 SUVs sold between 22 March 2019 and 17 March 2020.

Volvo Australia says that if the AEB system fails to brake the car, it may increase the risk of collision causing serious injury to vehicle occupants and other road users.

Volvo says the cars' driver-operated brakes have not been affected by the issue, while the AEB collision warning has also not been affected by the failure and will still alert drivers to an impending collision.

McLaren Recalls Senna, 720S, Other Cars over Fire Risk

2018-mclaren-720s-instrumented-test-107-1524229870.jpg?crop=0.782xw:0.719xh;0.0629xw,0.jpg

  • McLaren has issued a recall for nearly 2800 of its vehicles due to an increased risk of fire.
  • The vehicle includes the Senna and the popular 720S (pictured above).
  • Currently, McLaren is only aware of two vehicles being affected by the recalled parts, and those were the two that prompted the recall.
McLaren is recalling 2763 of its vehicles built between 2016 and 2020, including its $1 million hypercar, the Senna. The affected vehicles are built with a foam pad underneath the fuel tank that can absorb water, corrode the fuel tank, and lead to fuel leaking and, potentially, fire.

The affected McLaren products are the 2016 to 2020 720S, the 2020 GT, 2019 Senna, and the 2017 to 2019 570GT, according to a filing on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. McLaren will replace the foam pad and also the fuel tank, if it has corrosion. Currently, the automaker said that the fix for the GT hasn’t been finalized.

Takata airbag recall: 200,000 cars remain, 8000 to stop driving immediately

zdg1jmnae1bko9f9jshp.jpg

Nearly 200,000 potentially deadly Takata airbags remain on Australian roads unchecked – and 8000 are deemed so risky, owners have been asked to stop driving their cars immediately to have the vehicles bought back by the manufacturer.

Road safety authorities in Australia are baffled by thousands of car owners who are ignoring multiple recall notices and face-to-face attempts to contact them about the free repair.
Some car companies have hired private investigators to track down cars, while others have chartered private planes to visit remote islands and deserts across the country to fix isolated vehicles.

And yet still thousands of customers are refusing to get their deadly Takata airbags replaced.

Audi A1, A3 and TT recalled for transmission fault, 10,000 cars affected

eb27a6b4d12833bcfa1cb6382a081385.jpg

Audi Australia has issued a recall for 10,373 examples of its A1, A3 and TT sports coupe due to potentially faulty seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions that were previously dismissed as not requiring repairs.

Affected models include 2011-2016 model-year A1 small hatchback (pictured below), 2008-2016 model-year A3 mid size car (pictured above) and the 2012-2016 model-year TT sports car.

Audi says the vehicles were included in a previous recall for the same issue that was lodged on 20 October 2019.

However, due to an updated assessment criteria in the new recall, vehicles that were previously inspected and deemed to not need repair may now require replacement parts.

The recall notice lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says the defect relates to a faulty pressure accumulator fitted inside the transmission that may be susceptible to cracking.

2014-2019 Ram 1500 diesel pick-up recalled due to fire hazard

gtah5sd4czch7htn2arn.jpg

American Special Vehicles (ASV) – the company responsible for converting US pick-up specialist Ram’s cars to right-hand drive for the Australian market – has issued a recall of 438 examples of its 2014-2019 model-year 1500 diesel pick-up due to a defective part that may increase risk of fire.

The recall notice, lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says the defect relates to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler – a component of the vehicle’s emissions control system – fitted to diesel engine equipped models that may crack, resulting in a coolant leak into the intake manifold.

ASV says if coolant does leak into the intake manifold, this may increase the risk of a vehicle fire resulting in an accident, injury to vehicle occupants and other road users, and proper damage.
