Very good review Navnit013. This is the first Sumo Grande review I read through. Sumo Grande looks good in the pics.

Cheers,

Well Grande looks good in skin than on pics. BUT the latest iteration (with those stickers all round) has spoiled the look.

Sumo Grande is a well designed product, but poorly executed OR say, executed to a price.

Apollos are high mileage tyres actually. They last 50000+. BUT they grip less. Even the new tyres.

BUT I admit even I am surprised that those tyres lasted so long. We usually do long trips at a stretch without stopping much for rest. SO tyres get rubbed off a lot due to this.

Hi Navnit

I sensed a feeling that you were a lil hesitant to start this thread in the first couple of posts, but now what a beautiful thread this has turned out to be

A wonderul shade as well, infact in your profile snap the ARSENAL sticker photo is really a twister for me, because i was thinking that it is the back portion of the New STORME - Not even in my wildest dreams i had imagined it to be the back of the Grande [embarass]

Planning a trip to Leh.

Some info required:
1. Private cars entering Manali-Do we need prior permission?
2. Any kind of advanced permissions required to take my car to Khardung La and other places?

I would suggest you to take Srinagar Trip due to the following reasons:

1.) As you will gradually ascend so less chances of AMS and you will get good time to acclimatized yourself.

2.) You need prior permits from Manali to cross ROhtang Pass and man in summer its hell on Rohtang due to very heavy traffic.

3.) Yes you need permits to places you want to go from Leh, but for khardungla I guess its not required.

4.) Its easy from Keylong to start very early and cross Rohtang and come back or if you have time than you can come via Spiti valley which indeed a beautiful place to see. You just need 3 extra days.

Thanx Tornado,

The plan is to start from my place, pick my friend from Pune. Head to Sonmarg via chandigarh/Srinagar. Stay at Sonmarg a couple of days. Go to Leh through Drass/Kargil/Lamayuru. From Leh, visit Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, Hanle, Tso kar and return through Manali. May add a few more places.

As per my knowledge, we dont need any kind of prior permissions till I reach Leh. I dont know about other places I have mentioned. People who have done the trips before can enlighten me.

Just crossed 53000 kms. Papa's taken the car on a business trip. SO expecting it to cover a 1000 kms in a couple of days.

Problems: Nothing to cry/whine/worry about. The tyres are (finally) looking sick.

Still not decided on which tyres to buy. Was thinking about Michelin 245/70 R16 lattitude cross. BUT now am confused again. Also looking (leaning over actually) at Pirelli 245/70 R16 Scorpion ATR. Pirellis are pricey at 12000 approx a piece.

OH yes, The battery. Battery is also dying a slow death. Needs replacement.

Nice going

But I would suggest you to stick to the OEM size and go for Michellin or Bridgestone.
I think the size I have zeroed in on is well within the acceptable range. I can go upto 255/65 R16 actually. I prefer to upsize because there will be a big improvement is lateral grip. Steering will be more stiffer (I like hard steering) and more communicative.

And Bridgestone doesnt offer A/T tyres. They have 235/70 R16 in their range which is a H/T tyre. It will cost me 4000 less than the Pirelli.
And Pirelli is a very good manufacturer. But they lack the sheer capacity of Michelin. As both Michelins and Pirellis are imported, I think it wont make a big difference.

If you opt for upsize than I would suggest to go with Michilin as there cross lat is a fantastic tyre and has better grip and durability.

Finally, got to the source of the oil leak. It was a slightly loose oil filter. This thing would only happen after long (really long) drives. Last time misjudged the color to be green.
Monday morning after the airport drive the previous night, had the same leak again. Oil filter is now tightened. Looks like problem fixed.

Still, no news about the roof beading, the left front window weather strip and body control module.

CRASHED AGAIN.

This happened when returning from Mumbai. At Yellapur.

IMAG0004.jpg
Notice the missing rear view mirror. Hit by the front edge of the bus.

This is were the bus actually hit our car. Dents in red circle.

Special thanks to KSRTC. The driver dint notice our car next to him. And decided to cut right when being overtaken. REASON: We dint honk. And we were fast. I dont understand why dont they come up with some other explanation?
