Tata Punch hits new milestone with 3 lakh units rolled out

Tata_Punch_3_lakh_c94bb7de56.jpg

The Tata Punch has achieved a new milestone as the automaker rolled out the 3,00,000th model from its production facility in Pune. The landmark production figure was achieved in over two years since the micro SUV first went on sale in October 2021. What’s also noteworthy to mention is that the Punch hit the one lakh sales milestone 10 months after its launch, followed by another 50,000 units in January 2022.

Sales boomed further with the two lakh sales milestone coming by May last year, while the three lakh production mark has been achieved in another nine months. The Tata Punch attracts about 10,000 units monthly and is Tata Motors’ second best-selling offering after the Nexon. The Punch has consistently featured on the top 10 selling cars month-on-month brushing shoulders with models like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Dzire, Swift, Brezza, and Hyundai Creta, among others.

Tata Punch now has 22 variants, down from 28

Tata Motors has rationalised the Punch’s line-up by discontinuing some slow-selling trims like the Camo Edition and adding new top-spec Creative variants. The brand’s smallest SUV is now priced between Rs 6.13 lakh-10.20 lakh, and is available in a total of 22 variants; including 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options, but excluding the five CNG trims.

The Punch Camo Edition was introduced back in September 2022 on the mid-spec Adventure and Accomplished trims. Those trims got a new Foliage Green exterior paint shade (dual-tone finishes were available with a black or white roof), Camo badging and a few other minor cosmetic differences. The dashboard of the Punch Camo got a military green shade, while the seats were wrapped in a camouflage upholstery.

Dealer sources have revealed that the Punch Camo was a relatively slower-selling model, which is one reason for the removal of all eight Camo trims from the line-up. Also, special edition models such as the limited-run Kaziranga Edition, have, by definition, a limited shelf life.

However, Tata Motors has added new variants to the Punch’s line-up – Creative MT and AMT. In addition, the company has rejigged the features available on range-topping Creative and Creative Flagship trims; the latter now gets dual-tone paint finishes as standard, while the former will get dual-tone options only with the model equipped with the sunroof – the Creative DT SR.

One can see from the table that while the base price of the Punch has increased by Rs 13,000, most other trims see an increase of Rs 10,000. Even with the increase, the Punch is still well-priced compared to the likes of the Hyundai Exter (Rs 6.13 lakh-10.28 lakh) and Citroen C3 (Rs 6.16 lakh-9.08 lakh).

Tata Motors, India’s leading SUV manufacturer, is thrilled to announce that the Tata Punch has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the fastest to cross 4 Lakh sales milestone among SUVs, in just 34 months. Launched in October 2021, the Tata Punch introduced India to the sub compact SUV category. With its tall stance, high ground clearance and commanding driving position, the Punch is a stunning bold SUV that provides an exhilarating driving experience while smoothly navigating the diverse Indian terrains. Demonstrating the same, the Tata Punch emerged as one of the first front-wheel drive SUV to conquer the unpredictable peak of Sandakphu. Manoeuvring its way through the steep gradients, it proved its SUV capability to the world and truly punched above its weight, beating all the odds.

Ahead of its launch, the Punch received the coveted GNCAP 5-star rating with the highest adult occupant protection rating points achieved by any vehicle at that time. In August 2022, the Punch set a new benchmark in the industry, by becoming the first SUV to achieve the 1 Lakh sales milestone in a span of just 10 months. Ever since, the journey to next 1 Lakh has narrowed with the 2 Lakh milestone being clocked in the next 9 months, shortly followed by the 3 Lakh milestone in 7 months.

Furthermore, while the launch of the Punch iCNG in 2023 – First SUV with Tata Motors’ innovative twin-cylinder technology with a no compromise boot space, disrupted the market, the introduction of the Punch.ev in January 2024 boosted the sales even further by making it accessible to a larger customer base in multiple drivetrains.

Speaking on this accomplishment, Mr. Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “Tata Motors has always been known for its deep understanding of the Indian consumer. This attribute enables us to create disruptive yet highly functional products. With the Punch, we not only introduced the Indian market to a new sub-segment but also successfully democratized the SUV attributes by offering a comprehensive package in a compact footprint. We are elated that the Punch has resonated so well with the Indian consumers and has progressively found a loyal customer base, who have become its biggest brand ambassadors. We take great pride in crossing this milestone and are confident that the next 1 Lakh will be achieved even faster.”

Updated Tata Punch launched, price starts at Rs 6.13 lakh

Tata Motors has updated the Punch SUV and rationalised the line-up for its petrol and CNG variants, somewhat simplifying the range. The company has also added more features to select variants. While the base price of the Tata Punch is unchanged at Rs 6.13 lakh, the top-spec trim’s price has reduced by about Rs 20,000 from Rs 10.20 lakh. The company has also announced additional benefits up to Rs 18,000 on the SUV for a limited period.

The Tata Punch will no longer be available in Pure Rhythm, Accomplished, Accomplished SR and Creative Flagship trims. While the entry-level Pure, Adventure and Adventure Rhythm are unchanged, the Indian brand has introduced new Pure (O), Adventure S and Adventure + S trims. In addition, the Accomplished Dazzle and Creative variants have been slightly rejigged.
The number of CNG-powered Punch variants has increased from five to seven. Like with the petrol versions, the entry-level Pure, Adventure and Adventure Rhythm continue. However, there are a greater number of mid-spec and top-spec variants to choose from. Prices for the range-topping CNG variant has risen by about Rs 5,000.

As for features, the new Pure (O) petrol variant gets central locking, powered windows, powered ORVMs, wheel covers, and other bits over the base Pure trim. Meanwhile, the Adventure S and Adventure + S, as their names imply, add a sunroof and rear AC vents, among other things, to the Adventure Rhythm trim. Punch Accomplished + and the variants above it get the new and larger 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen; Creative + and Creative + S trims add a wireless charger as well.

The exterior colour options for the Punch have also changed marginally, depending on the variant selected.

Pure variants get Orcus White and Daytona Grey finishes only; the Adventure and Adventure Rhythm also have a Tropical Mist finish. The sunroof-equipped Adventure trims add a Calypso Red paint shade, and the Accomplished variants are also available in Meteor Bronze. Finally, the Creative variants are available in five dual-tone finishes; the Meteor Bronze one available on the mid-spec variants is replaced by the signature Tornado Blue finish.

Mechanically and aesthetically, there are no changes to the Punch, and for now, Tata's smallest SUV offering will continue with just the feature update.

The Tata Punch continues to rival the likes of the Hyundai Exter (Rs 6-Rs10.43 lakh), Citroen C3 (Rs 6.16-Rs 9.42 lakh^) and the Maruti Ignis (Rs 5.84-Rs 8.06 lakh).
