Hi Friends,

I am posting in this thread again to convey that I am taking up this same route again. This time, to take my parents to Madurai, Kanyakumari and Rameshwaram during April 17~20 long weekend.

When I was thinking of posting the travelogue from last trip, this new trip, along the same path came by, so, will post the details at the end of this trip.

The plan is as follows:
Day 1 (April 17) - start from Bangalore to reach Madurai by afternoon - Visit Meenakshi temple and take rest for the day
Day 2 (April 18th) - Start early and reach Kanyakumari - Visit Suchindram, Devi Kanya Kumari temple, sun set point, and possible, Vivekananda Kendra and rest for the remaining day
Day 3 (April 19th) - Start early and reach Rameshwaram - Visit Danushkoti and Rameshwaram temple take rest for the remaining day
Day 4 (April 20th) - Start early and return Bangalore.

It is exact copy of my last trip. However, this time around, it is peak summer (got to protect from the heat).

Secondly, while returning from Rameshwaram to Bangalore, I followed the GPS honestly, and I was made to pass through the narrow lanes of Madurai to reach the highway towards Bangalore

Can someone suggest where to take the bypass road on the way from Rameshwaram to Bangalore so that, I dont have to pass through the busy and narrow market place lanes of Madurai.

I too couldn't find the bypass on both ways in my Rameswaram trip last week. Both Sygic as well as google navigation were used but alas!

Yes, I too had tried both, and they led me right into the narrow and crowded streets of Madurai.

Any help regarding bypassing Madurai and hitting NH towards Bangalore while returning from Rameshwaram will be most appreciated.

In addition, please let me know if there are any important and very old temples between Bangalore and Madurai, as well as between Madurai and Kanyakumari.

With less than 10 days for my trip, I googled a bit and noted the route bypassing Madurai while returning from Rameshwaram and the same is shown in the screenshot below:

This alternate route takes requires an extra 30 km or so, but, is still worth to avoid the crowded streets of Madurai.

This time around, I am taking a little extra care and as a part of the preparation I bought:
1. Tow rope (5 ton)
2. Tyre pressure guage
3. Puncture repair kit
4. Small took box
5. Torch

I have not yet bought a 12v car charging point based air compressor. I am still wondering whether to buy one or not. Any suggestions on trusted compressors will from Tai-gers will be helpful.

Planning to get the car checked today so that, I will know if there are any issues and there will be ample time for rectification before April 17th.

I just revisited the travel book entry I had for concerned region (onwards to Rameswaram) and I can point out where I messed up my route (see the offshoots in the route taken), probably can help you stick to Madurai internal route and save some distance.

@hemantp, I did not understand the meaning of "probably can help you stick to Madurai internal route and save some distance" - Are you recommending me to go via Madurai city instead of taking the Airport (outer ring?) road.

With just three days left for my trip, I am all excited. All prints for the trip ready, vehicle in good condition. I did a 200 km trip yesterday to see if any problems come up, but, none are noticeable. So, all set for the trip!

@mastiandroid5, looking at my tracks, I just thought I did 2 unnecessary U-turns causing the trouble during onward and if you don't make those, you could save some KMs.

But giving some more thought, I feel your choice for continuing on NH7 and then taking Kappalur airport road is best. Sorry for the confusion.

The map you posted is the right one to bypass Madurai traffic. But if you cross the city at odd time, it is not that conjusted as Bangalore. After 10PM roads are traffic less. The bypass roads were in pretty decent shape an year ago.

If you cross city on odd timing just pass through the city instead of all this circus.

Thanks to rekharam and hemantp for the suggestions.

I will be passing around 10 am or so. I remember last time it was quite crowded around that hour.

Will try out the bypass this time around.

I had a wonderful and pleasure filled trip of 4 days - Bangalore - Madurai - Kanyakumari - Rameshwaram - Bangalore - covering a total distance of 1749 km.

Taking the Airport ring road on the way back from Rameshwaram to Bangalore helped me avoid the traffic.

Will make a detailed travelogue soon.

Thanks all for your suggestions and help during the trip.

I recalled you during the entire trip man! You are the first member from TAI that I ever met, and that too during my first long drive, so, cannot forget :)

Working on the travelogue, will take time, though.
