Aathupalam Bridge over the Noyyal

Is that the same bridge we are discussing about
Yes it is that bridge.

Collecting toll for such a small bridge for a period of more than 20 years even when that is the only entry point to the City from two directions. Allowing toll free entry to local vehicles is a good thing. But this bridge is a high traffic one with thouands of vehiclesfrom near by towns pass through daily.

The issue I have is more fundamental , if you have toll roads - they have to comply to a certain national standard - you cannot have single lane tar roads with toll imposed. At a minimum they should be 3 lane each side is my view and gated(so there are no cows and bulls joining the fray).

there has to be a standard set for toll booths, if they can save time/money and fuel in turn i dont think there is an issue in putting up a toll - afterall well maintained roads are good for our cars as well. But unfortunately in India toll booths create traffic problems than resolve them!
Well said.

There are several roads in our country where toll is collected for double line roads (without any divider).

Toll is justified for well constructed maintained roads which are at least 4 lane.

In Bangalore a toll of Rs 139 is charged for a distance of 30 - 40 km (NICE Road) and its still not constructed properly and not even complete yet.

This is good point mentioned here. Atleast cars with local registeration number should be excluded from paying toll at local tool booth.s [roll]
In Gujarat, toll is not collected from vehicles with local registration numbers in NH8

You say Gujarat for the win? [:)]

One thing always makes me feel sick. Right from A to Z, we are being ripped off from heavy taxes. You say no? [:(]

1. Road tax for cars.
2. Again Toll charges. I remember some one saying that to travel from Chennai to Kolkata one paid nearly 2K as toll charges.
3. State and central tax for fuel.

Where all these are going??? This may sound a bit OT. But just wanted to put.

On NH-1 if you start from Delhi towards Ambala,Jalandhar you end up paying approx 0.75 INR/Km and for last many years construction is going on this highway and there are hell lot of diversion.
First you pay hefty amount for road tax while buying the car and then again pay toll for same road.
Most of the roads in all states are in damn bad state, which is just reducing the life of car + adding up additional maintenance expense. After paying so much for road tax its our right to get good roads, but this is India. You as a taxpayer just pay and let politician loot your hard earner money.
